This is a basic tutorial explaining Maschine choke groups.
I think I may have slipped it into another video or two before but wanted to have a video specifically covering this for those new to maschine or those that may not understand why you would use this feature.
Many are used to this feature from the akia mpc and other hardware drum machines/samplers, as well as other software.

Congrats SJ! You Made @Leon Taylor’s 5 video quota for the week.LOL!
Did I? Oh snap lol…definitely wasn’t thinking about that lol. I just post when I have something.
Someone asked a question this morning about this from the sample cutoff video I did so I just whipped it up real quick lol.
Thanks for the vid on choke groups. I never really had to use it on the MPC cause I wuud jus select a sound an put it on note off to accomplish that task. So between polyphony being set to 1, AHD, ADSR and choke groups I can control any samples cutoff in creative ways. Thank SJ for answering my question with a video.

no doubt fam
how you get your maschine to look like that
got a custom skin from 12inchskins.com
Yeah this is very nice. I know it for hats. Any other examples other than pads to use this technique?
A lot of people use it for their sample chops. So say you have a loop that you chopped up, and you want each shop to cut the other off, that’s another way this is useful.
yeah pretty cool. i guess i got it. I came from an eletronic music backround, so i never got that deep into all that sampling stuff. But i think i will record a chord-progression, chop it up and see what carzy thing i can do with it that way 🙂
Thx a lot!
Yes indeed man 🙂

Watch this video, good example of them. Nasty ass beat as well, boy killz it!!
The vids are the best. Thanks St. Joe & Knock – you guys are patient teachers. Peace.
Really glad to help fam!!
St. Joe… OK…..I spent all day yesterday fooling with machine….(I am a new be to machine and the whole drum pad thing so my learning curve is a bit bigger than most others) anyway as I’ve said, I spent all day with machnie and did not get anywhere…. I tried putting things into choke groups…..could not get it…..I then went to “BlueSkyRepublik’s UNOFFICIAL Machine Manual” and followed their instructions (2nd to last page) but could not get it to work…. I watched your video multiple times and stopped and started it a lot……..still could not get it…… I was never… Read more »
Make sure on the right screen you are on the SRC tab and on the left screen make sure you’re on the Sound tab with “modules” highlighted 🙂
St. Joe. I have done that … Here are the steps as printed in the other manual… One technique is to set up monophonic mode rather than polyphonic. 1. Ensure in (CONTROL) Mode 2. Press ‘GROUP’, 3. Press ‘SRC’, 4. Select Page 1 of 3 4. Adjust ‘POLYPHONY’, , to equal 1 note polyphony can be set for pads but when, choking sounds group polyphony is adjusted. another technique is to set up choke groups, where all sounds assigned to the same group will cut each other off:- 1. Ensure in (CONTROL) Mode 2. Press ‘SOUND’, 3. Select PAD Sound… Read more »
No, nothing has changed, have you put two pads into the same choke group?
What exactly are you looking to accomplish? Do you want one pad to cut itself off or multiple pads to cut each other off?
You can set a single pad to cut itself off by settings it’s polyphony to 1, for multiple pads either set the group poly or put them into the same choke group.
What do you see on your screen when trying to set a choke group?
OK…nothing has changed…Good to know…. What am I trying to accomplish? A. Multiple pad s to cut each other off…. I was able to get to the Polyphony to dial down to 1. However I was never able to see a choke group listed…. I was never able to turn pages and you spoke of…. I have been reading the Machine Quick start guide and came across this: Voice setting (polyphony) 1. Press the Button of the Group (buttons A-H) you want to set the voice settings of. 2. Press Button 2 (GROUP) to select the Group page. 3. Make… Read more »
Make sure you have a sample loaded, then make sure you’re on the modules tab on the screen, and the src tab, it’s the first page, it will have your choke group right there. It’s done exactly like this video is showing.
ok …one more stupid question…..
How do I “De-select” a button…….as stated in step 3 above….When I pushed the “Modules” button it would glow softly … It would not go out completely….If I pushed it one more time it glowed brightly…..then I did it again and it went soft……
Also I see that maybe I never did select a group (A – H) while trying this…..
sorry I have so many issues but I thank you for your help
Clifford
You just press it again, this is the modules button on the screen, not the physical modules button. It will be the 4th button above the left screen, it will make the modules tab go from clear to black, when it’s black that means it’s in focus.
Ok….. I watched your video several more times ….it helped but….I ended up piecing things together……. Here is what I have learnt… Button 5 needs to be set to sampler and samples needs to be underneath it Button 4 needs to be set to modules Button 3 needs to be set to Sound At this point I can then pick a sample and load it to a pad Knob one can be twisted to set the Polophony set to 1 and Choke group to one It then worked…… I gotta say…not even the manual covered this…ooohh Booy.. Anyway I got… Read more »
Indeed, that’s what I meant by the src (sampler) tab and making sure you have a sample loaded (src tab changes to whatever you have loaded once you hit the modules tab), also since you were working at the pad level I assumed you were already on the “sound” tab and not the group or master tab, I didn’t think to ask you that one, my bad. Glad you got it working, I think it’s just a matter of getting familiar with the module types and focus. Anytime you want to do something to a specific pad you need to… Read more »
St. Joe. thanks…..I’m really not convienced that I did this whole technique correctly…..I mean I got it to work and I was able to set choke groups and get pads to cut themselfs off and all….but I’m not really convienced that I did it correctly…..I feel like I just stumbled into it…… If I am understanding it correctly you should be able to use this technique for both preset sounds from synths (loaded on pads) and samples from your sample Library….. Mine only worked from the sample library…at first I was using synth sounds loaded onto pads and then when… Read more »
Src is anything you have loaded, src can be midi out, sample, input, instrument, or plugin module
choke groups only work with the sampler module as the src, so if you do not have a sample loaded, it will not work
Global = Master
Group = Group
Sound = Pad level
I think your confusion came from trying to setup choke groups on your synths 🙂
You can’t do it, so that probably caused your confusion
I think you are correct. so then I can only use sample from my library to use in choke groups. Got it. And yes that is why it did not work then. so then we can work on 3 levels and i was in the basement……at the pad level… thanks for the continued help here…….I am going thru all the video’s and taking notes and trying things out….I am starting in the 101 section and moving cronologically from there so I am sure I will have more questions….but I know that I will lern this thing if it Kills me…..(or… Read more »
It works with anything you load into the sampler module, this could be from your library or anything from the Maschine “samples” tab. That’s the drums, loops, hits, etc.
SAINT JOE WHERE CAN I GET THAT CHORD SAMPLE PACK FROM? SOUNDS DOPE!
I think it’s from premier hip hop beats and instrumentals by eQuipped music, you can get em at big fish.
Hey Joe,
thx for your work.
Could you please explain how to loop a slice? I activated / enabled the function in the menue an selected a start / endpoint (crossfade is zero). BUT: it doesn´t work?!
Any idea?
Best wishes form Germany
Tom
looping is when you want to sustain a sound and turn it into a longer note, which also will not work if the sample is in oneshot mode
it’s useful for taking small notes and extending them

Thanks for your great tutorials.I’ve bought lots of software on your recomendations they’re the best. Having a word search is a great idea with your tutorials also. BUT Every tutorial person from Mr. clean to promac and now you guys omit things as if you don’t even realize it and it drives me nuts. At 1:01 in the choke group tutorial you just start pushin buttons on the hardware not even explaining what you are doing and you don’t have a view of the hardware screen so all I can do is start pushing buttons at random trying to make… Read more »
Thanks for the comment, as for the tutorial, there were no extra button pushes, when you’re on the sound/sampler module and you have a sample loaded, it will be the first page that is shown. It says “voice settings” so every time you load a sample, this is the first parameter page you will see. It gives you the polyphony and the choke group setting, as well as the pitchbend, and the engine mode. Make sure “modules” is highlighted on your controller.
Thanks alot saintjoe, Your quick follow up did not go unnoticed thats what it’s all about. With your conversation with Clifford I was able to 80% understand the choke world.I’ll get it down I’m one of those humans that needs to do it to learn it.A few non maschine questions if I’m allowed,if not please let me know how I can contact you elsewhere .Do you have or is there available a tutorial for Korg pad kontrol. I’m trying to use their device along with maschine playing cymbals on the korg, drum roll ,cowbell tamborine etc.Right now if I load… Read more »
Always glad to help bro! As for the Korg I don’t have any specific tutorials for that as I’ve never used one. But you should be able to get it to line up as long as you set maschine to respond to midi.
As for your original controller, you can use it, but in midi mode, maschine software currently only recognizes 1 controller in “maschine mode” at a time.
For background vocals, look up Vocaloid by yamaha.
Hey ST. Joe I got a message that you’ve suspended my payments and I want to clear that up I,ve been getting messages from paypal saying they are’nt making a payment, but did’nt say to who.. I don’t remember if I had to pay you with paypal up front but if thats the case I would like to switch it to a credit card if possible instead.Paypal and I are not seeing eye to eye because they want to link to a bank account and I want to pay them with my credit card the way I always have with… Read more »
No problem man, glad to help. Sounds like paypal is having an issue with billing your account, that would be a question for them. However, if you want to email me a help@MaschineTutorials.com I’ll see what I can find out.
is this video taken down? i cant see it for some reason
No its still there
Do the Choke group number effect every group A-H globally or just within the one group?
It’s per group, so you can have multiple choke groups within the same group
Have i gone nuts, or is there not a Master/Slave option for choke groups?
(I’m working on an old track in 1.8)
No, only the choke group number in that version.
Dang. Seems a bit of an oversight.
I take it that its in 2.0, yeah?
Yeah it’s in Maschine 2
