After watching the series saintjoe did on sequencing Maschine inside of a daw, I decided to have a look at using Maschine in Logic.
This video shows the basics of setting it up, routing midi, audio, and using the environment area to handle all your routing.
This definitely changes a lot of things for me as far as workflow and I’ll be exploring much more in regards to how to use Maschine with Logic.
Any questions you know what to do!

Thanks knocks this cleared up alot for me. Will you be adding to this as you discover more with Maschine and Logic???
Hey Knock, thanks for the tutorial. I’m just having a slight problem. I downloaded the preconfigured Logic project but I can’t seem to be able to record in Logic from Maschine? I have a keyboard set up that I can trigger the Maschine kits and I can record with them in Logic just not from the pads in Maschine. I can hear the Maschine pads and they do give me a input signal in my Logic channel strip. Figure I must have something configured slightly different? So near lol
Hey fam, make sure you put Maschine in midi control mode and that Logic is set to receive midi from the controller itself.
Whats Up Brick !! Absolutely !! I am going to post more. Thats the whole reason we are here. Logic and Maschine is not my normal workflow.. but I think it may become that..LOL. Any other questions just let us know Fam !
Yo Knock!
I was PRAYING someone would post some coverage of the Maschine-Logic wedding. I’ve been married to Logic for about 3 years but lately, I’ve been cheatin with Maschine’s fine ass. Now it looks like my 2 kids, Logine and Maschogic can grow up together. Will you & Joe (I know Joe’s a PC) PLEASE keep this series comin’! Now I’m cloaked AND happy!
LMAO !!! That was crazy. Logine and Maschogic. !!! Glad we can help stop you from cheatin..LOL. Thanks Bro !
Lol, logic looked mad nice with the environments man, that was dope.
oh o! I think we are about get a convert here. LOL!
Ameen to this Tutorial.
Maschine took Beat making to an other level, and lot of People been asking how to hook their mpc to Logic but I think if they see this Tutorial right here ……..The transition would be quick.
Thanks Guys
Thats wassup Knock. Forgot you just create a multiinst in the environment window. Did a different way. Now you remind me. Its stuck o in my mind.
BTW peeps Knock was up till 2am, me 6am and Fadayz was. up fadays trying to figure this out. Saint Joe, see what you doing to mere mortals homie.
Good looking out. Nice Job.
MT fam is all about helping and exploring! Good stuff!
Logic user..new to maschine! luv this one
Good video. It’s crazy what you can do inside of Logic.
Thanks Knock. Keep the Logic vids coming, I’m eventually gonna venture out of my Bootcamp partition lol. Seriously though I’m really looking forward to learning Logic.
Good stuff Knock!
cubase user here saying damn Logic Looks niiiiiiice!
Imma try this procdure in cb4.5 .
Keep doin the works maan.
Im a Logic 9 user. I love it! Jus as much as Maschine but for different reasons. I want to kno if I could skip the first step of tryin to record maschine as midi in Logic. I would record midi data in maschine. but Can I use the last step if Ive recorded my midi in maschine but I want to mix it in Logic 9. Im not sure if I explained my question right. But the “Q” is for KNock or SJ.
THanks in advance for the advice
yeah, you just need to route the audio in that case into Logic, just use the last step in the video and you should be good.
Yeah! Thats tha biznazz. SJ I really appreciate your site. Ur cutting our learning curb and shooting us invaluable production methods that can help us get out of any rutz we’ve been in. See a engineer or someone who doesnt do production in our genre cant give us the salt of the Earth advice u guys give. Man Thanx seriously Thank you
that’s whasup fam! really glad you appreciate the knowledge, means everything to us!
I m a logic and mashie user and just joined MT today.
And i gota say you blew my mind because i expected only to learn some about maschine.
But since im digin in them vids i gota appreciate your site.
because i already got more then i expected.
thumbs up and keap the god work
word, welcome!
Mad props to you guys for all of the help!
maybe i’m missing something but, I’m noticing a latency problem when using Maschine with Logic, can you please mention something to address this issue?
thanx!
Thanks man. Please explain more of where the latency is…and also what version of logic are you using. I have 9.13
Thanks for the reply!
i fixed the issue after re-listening to the setup procedure of using Maschine & Logic , latency not an issue now!
I’m a 58 yr old guitarist/keyboardist i’m truly enjoying Maschine,
and i’m truly inspired by the work and the info you guys are putting down! Keep up the good work!!
thanx!
Trey ..thanks man. Glad you got that worked out and Glad you are here.
Im happs about this video..
Stir..whats up man. Glad you liked it.
thanks for the vid. good stuff.
anyway to sample with maschine from an external source as an AU plugin inside logic?
you would need to route an audio track to whatever track maschine is on, or you can load maschine on your master track using the maschine fx plugin
I don’t use logic so I don’t know the routing of audio in it but I’m sure you should be able to route an audio track wherever you want
thanks joe, i figured it out.
you gotta create a bus on your audio track and select that bus as the input on the sidechain menu of maschine.
if you select input 1-16 on the sidechain menu it’ll come in mono. make sure to make a bus.
yep, didn’t know what to call it in logic so I just said audio track lol, but yeah you got it!
I was playing around in logic recording a track and I noticed that I cant use my note repeat button on maschine and record midi at the same time. Is there any work around to be able to use the note repeat when in Midi mode on maschine to record in logic???? HHHHMMMMMmmmmm
Note repeat is not a midi function, it’s an internal sequencer function of maschine. So it will not work in midi mode.
Thanks SJ Thought we could have everythang I guess LOL
yeah the maschine controller doesn’t have it’s own internal clock so it can’t do midi sequencing functions like note repeat in midi mode.
When I click to add ‘maschine 16xoutput stereo’ its not there. The only options I have are maschine effects. How do I get maschine in there?
Timmy..sorry i didnt see this… Did you get it to work. Let me know.
I have the same problem as timmy i can only see machine fx?? Who do i get the 16 output stereo one
hi guys, I am a new member and like everyone on this page I am really impressed and appreciate your videos on here! they are a great help.
I recently both maschine and I am a logic 9 user. I was wondering if there is a way to perform live on maschine switching between scenes and patterns and at the same time recording into logic as a midi region where you can later go back and adjust here and there…? Or something like that? 🙂
Welcome and we are glad you like the site! There are a couple of ways to do what you wish. You can use Progam Changes or Midi notes from the scenes themselves.
I did a video on program changes and will be doing one for the midi note aspect here shortly.
Check out the program change one, I was using ableton live but the concept is the same.
https://maschinetutorials.com/understanding-the-different-scene-playback-sync-and-trigger-settings
thanks man! that was interesting, exactly what I was looking for. I’ll look forward to the 2nd part!
Cool man, glad to help, yeah..I need to get that 2nd part done, got a lot of topics on the list to bang out yet 🙂
SJ, when I click the sound to midi notes in shift/control mode after loading a drum kit I don’t get any sound. Any ideas of what is going on?
Got it now.
Awesome video as usual. I watched a vid on production with Cubase. I see that the piano roll will draw notes according to the quantize value and note value. 1/8th or quarter for example. When you draw in notes they appear quantized and the right length. This is not happening for me in Logic. HELP!
Thanks knock…this is what I want the Maschine for! Unfortunately, I have a brand new iMac with Logic 9, but I am waiting for NI to have full support for OSX LION. I actually just joined this site today to try to learn Maschine before I buy it (someday soon…I hope). I think I’ll be set with Maschine & Komplete 8. Now…if NI can get compatible with Lion…my credit card will be exploited.
LOL I hear you on that fam lol.
Are there any other logic or maschine prefs which need to be set up for this? Im following this tutorial word for word and getting no joy. The main issues are the multi instruments arent triggering different groups of kit, only the same kit on all multi instrument channels. And when I press record in logic, no bar with midi notes appear (ie nothing records). Im setting up all the prefs (midi batch/environment settings). And nothing.
Make sure you put Maschine in midi control mode as well.
Thats fixed half of it (ie Im getting midi notes appearing in Logic) but no sound? Sorry to be a pain with this..
Gareth….fam you are NEVER a pain…thats what we are here for. I am mad because i am out with the kids and if i was home i could fire up logic and solve this for you. I will be home in like4 hours. I will get right on it soon as i get in. I was thinking just to make a template so as soon as you load logic it will already have the settings for maschine. Look for my reply later
Thanks man, Im new to Logic and its a headache, so really appreciate the help! Maschines midi batch set up is confusing as it wont assign different midi channels for different sounds/groups, the last value i enter seems to automatically appear in the other groups.
Its just a visual thing. Maschine only shows the last setting you made but the groups will respond to the different channels. I have been pushing them to make each one show its channel
I just realized that you may have to hit group E in order to hear the sound. Check this out. While in midi controller mode (on the hardware) Hold shift down anduse the left right arrow buttons (under browse and sampling buttons) to navigate to Template 1- which should say “New Template” then while hitting pads click each group button (A to H) and stop when you hear something play. Here on my system group E is the one that plays the sounds. Let me know if this helps
I can’t seem to get my pads to trigger individual sounds once I get into midi control mode. Which template are you using? I tried the one SJ had in another video. Can’t get it to work. I got midi info on the Instrument channel with no sound, but not the multis.
Make sure you have turned on “midi batch settings” for the group, and set it to “sounds to midi notes”.
Also remember, Maschine responds to the root key of c3 by default, so pad 1 will be c3, make sure the controller is sending data starting with that note. If you set the sound midi batch settings the controller I made should work without any tweaking.
also try the Maschine Logic template we just added to the MT Files section up top. Keep in mind the template it Logic 9
Let me know if it works for you
Thanks SJ and KS this seems work with your template and group E triggers the sounds, great! I kind of assumed the way of working would be to keep switching back and fourth with the midi mode. For example Id like the create the beat patterns in Maschine and then go into midi mode and hit record in Logic and my midi patterns would then start recording in Logic? Or am I missing the point in all this?? Logic at the moment only records midi when Im manually hitting the patterns and not pre recorded midi from Maschine. Also how… Read more »
The template is setup for playing in your sequence as midi, if you just want to get your midi out of Maschine into Logic you don’t need the controller in midi mode, you can just drag the midi out into Logic and point it back to the Maschine plugin track. The groups still need to be on “sounds to midi notes” then your midi will trigger them while playing in Logic.
@ Gareth
I think we are mis-communicating, what we are doing here is recording the midi into Logic using Maschine as a sound module. What you want to do is “print” the midi you have already recorded into maschine, into logic correct? If this is what you want to do, it’s much quicker to drag and drop the midi into Logic. You need to have the audio outputs routed properly, I suggest downloading the template file Knock made as it is all setup and ready to go.
tbh SaintJoe i didnt know what i wanted! But yeah I realise dragging the midi data from Maschine into Logic makes the most sense. I tried this last night and it seems to only drag all the channels midi into 1 midi layer in Logic. Id prefer the each sound to have its own midi layer in Logic. Any ideas how? Will have a play about when i finish work. I also need to suss out how to bounce the midi channels to audio in logic so i can share projects with a mate (who doesnt have certain vsts i… Read more »
There are a couple ways to bounce a midi track to audio in Logic: 1. The quickest way (but not always the most effective) is to right click on the midi track, go down to Bounce and Merge and select Bounce in Place (Option+B). From there you can either replace the track, create a new track and decide what to do with the old track…e.g. Mute/Hide.. You can do the same thing with audio tracks, for Wet/Dry tracks. 2. Create an audio track, create a buss from the output of the midi track into the input of the audio track,… Read more »
@Jared, he has the midi inside of Maschine, not Logic, he is wanting the midi from his patterns inside of Maschine transferred into Logic. He was trying to realtime record the midi into a Logic midi track. In that instance, drag and drop of the midi would be the quickest method I think…but again, I don’t use Logic lol.
@ Gareth, change the sound midi batch settings to “sounds to midi channels” instead of sounds to midi notes and that should let you split them
OR
You can solo each sound you want to drag and drag the midi that way.
Man, been at this for a minute, I’m about to do a screenflow, showing everything I am trying. Still no luck. Don’t really want to do drag and drop stuff. Just trying to streamline. Logic has been my main workflow.
Tried both the controller templates and the Logic template.
Thanks for the patience.
The Drag and Drop wasn’t for you it was for Gareth who wants to get the midi already recorded in Maschine into Logic. For you, you want to record realtime by hitting the pads on the Maschine controller and have it trigger Maschine right?
We WILL get this solved. I think I know what you want to do …and I am sitting here doing it as I type. i am not sure why the template doesnt work for you. Also..after loading the logic template…did you switch it to midi controller mode. I opened it up and by default for some reason its not in midi controller mode. So i simply put it in that mode and it worked. I am curious to see that screenflow vid you do.
I got that screenflow video up: http://vimeo.com/29574788
to troubleshoot this. Thanks guys.
I don’t use logic, but it looks like to me you don’t have midi setup properly. I’m not talking about the midi routing, but I’m talking about Maschine as a midi controller in Logic. Logic needs to see Maschine as an active midi controller for you do send midi to anything in Logic. Once you get Logic to receive midi from the controller, (doesn’t have to be to maschine) then it will work. Audio routing and multi instrument settings will not help if the Maschine controller isn’t an active controller in Logic.
I got it figured out. I was attempting to do this before with the Mackie Control template with Logic. In logic, there is a control surface setup area, I was using maschine as a control surface for logics software..
So Mackie Control was using the Midi 0 Port. preventing maschine from using the port as a midi controller.
Just tried it out on a single track instrument and it worked, will try the multi track and see what I can come up with.
Thanks!
Cool!! I knew it was a midi problem with Logic seeing Maschine as a controller, good news.
I appreciate it man, Ya’ll know your stuff! Logic could see maschine, that’s what was getting me.
Yeah, it was seeing the plugin, but not the controller 🙂
Good stuff!
Hey SJ, Im dragging the midi notes into Logic but it seems im getting distortion (like Logic and Maschine are playing at the same time – effectively doubling up). I can fix this by deleting midi notes inside of Maschine. Is there a way to bypass it playing maschines midi notes without having to delete them?
Yeah, just put the group on a blank pattern, that way you will still have your pattern when you need it but it will not be clashing with Logic.
So copying all the scenes to an empty group of scenes and then deleting the originals?
no, in the group you want to trigger from Logic, just put that group on a blank pattern. You have like 16 patterns per group, just pick one that is blank so that it doesn’t playback when you start Logic.
Thanks SJ/KS/JM for the tips, Im almost there! Whenever I drag midi into the logic template (you provided) it creates new midi tracks but with GM midi instruments (so i get pianos and all sorts playing when it should be Maschine). Any way to stop this?
You’ve got to point the midi back to Maschine, it will not be pointing to Maschine by default, so you need to set your new midi tracks to point to Maschine on the channels you want it to trigger on.
Any chance on a tutorial which demonstrates recording midi into Logic via the IAC driver? This method (correct me if im wrong) looks a lot more straight forward and quicker (ie not dragging midi etc), it just seems to record the midi from maschine into Logic. I have set up the IAC drivers and specified maschine to midi out but get stuck with the routing inside of logic and splitting midi channels up and actually hearing the sound etc….
I can’t help there, I’m on a PC, however, even if you record the midi in realtime after you’ve recorded it in Maschine (seems longer than drag and drop or midi export) You will still have to route it back to Maschine to hear anything.
Hello All!! For some reason this is not working for me. I followed this step by step and when i go to midi batch setup and start assigning channels to each group, it applies the same channel to all groups. When i go to my multi instruments, they all play the same channel…. Anyone else have this issue?
It’s not the same channel, it just looks that way. Quickest way to tell which channel a group is on is check the midi settings or a sound in that group. The midi batch setup is just a script, so it only shows the most recent channel you assigned.
Thanks for the quick reply man! I appreciate it. problem is that in logic when i click each to the External midi channels they are all playing the same group even though i set them up in maschine midi batch setup
make sure you send your midi channels in logic on different channels, to match your groups. This will not happen automatically, so you need to send one to channel 1, channel 2, channel 3, etc.
yeah i have that set up… no luck. i hate this stuff… creativity killer!! lol
When you do midi batch settings, did you actually choose a different midi channel for each group? Or did you just do the midi batch setting without changing the channel? It’s all in the midi routing.
yes, i chose midi channel 1 for a, midi channel 2 for b, i think it has something to do with the control mode…. machine is not responding to what i select on my mac book pro… in control mode, i am using the massive template. but then i don’t hear anything at all
You choose those channels but what do you have your midi channels set to send on? It has to be on the individual midi channels as well. Control mode only effects what you’re controlling with the maschine controller, it doesn’t have any effect on if Maschine responds to midi from your daw or not.
my software instrument track is set to all midi channels. my external midi 1 is set to channel 1, external midi 2 is set to channel 2, external midi 3 is set to channel 3, external midi 4 is set to channel 4. The port setting for them all is off
I’m not sure what all that means, I don’t use logic. What I can tell you is that, if you have a midi track in Logic and you want to send midi from it to maschine you need to have it send on a specific channel relating to the maschine group. Basically, however you setup multi channel instruments in logic, with multiple midi tracks, that’s what you need to do to send midi to Maschine. If you want to use the controller to input data, you need to have it setup as a midi controller inside of Logic and your… Read more »
thanks fam i am going to try to figure whats up with my midi settings/mapping in logic…. i’ll let you know how this turns out. Thanks for all of the help!!!
Make sure you did the multi instrument in the environment, and when you have maschine in midi control mode, use the general template instead of the massive one. You may be having an issue with the pad notes note being setup right.
check this out: https://maschinetutorials.com/sequencing-maschine-in-your-daw-part-1-controller-editor-template-setup
Also, make sure your midi tracks are set to receive midi from the controller, I believe that would be set by enabling the port on the track?
You are the man! That did the trick… now let me finish watching the rest of the tutorial!!
Good news 🙂
MAN!!!! It took me a month to figure this out! I mean I was doing everything right and STILL wasn’t getting it to work right. I went to the other section about setting up your template, came back to this one and started taking the steps. STILL NOTHING! Just when I was about to say forget it, LO AND BEHOLD, I look to the right in the Library tab and noticed that my midi channel settings weren’t set to Maschine multi channel instrument, but to GM instrument or something like that. I clicked Maschine and then selected the subsequent channels,… Read more »
Awesome man, glad ya got it rocking! 🙂
Can anyone help. Iwas always able to use Maschine in Logic 9 pro. But I erased somthing and I logic is not finding Maschine any more . What can I do to use Maschine as a vst in logic.
replace whatever you erased, sounds like you deleted the plugin, you can reinstall the most recent update and it should put the plugin file back for you
I can only see machine FX can’t see any other options can someone help?? New to logic…
Make sure you are opening from the instrument area and not from the audio fx area.
Whats Up Griffin
Like Joe said above.
If you want to see it on vid I made a quick one for you
http://www.screencast.com/t/XjIX2ViDH
yeah man i just downloaded logic 9 today from app store.. Because i had ableton but thought logic looked better for workflow. Now i have exported my wav files like you did for the drums separated and instead of 8 bars there 8 1/2 bars??
🙁
You dragged the wave and it was 8 1/2?
Hi Knock
how to configure Maschine as a midi input device in Logic settings please ?
thanks
i am having so many problems. 🙁 i just tried to follow this video with the 4 drum kits routed to midi channel 1,2,3,4
When i set my groups in machine to midi channels, they keep re setting themselves to channel 4 and other channels randomly? Im so annoyed….
That is only a batch process, it only shows the most recent one, your channels are not changing.
Watch this video, it explains it.
https://maschinetutorials.com/mt-quick-tip-see-the-proper-midi-channel-for-each-groups-midi-batch-setting
try this for few weeks already, and it still doesnt work.
It seem i cant work properly with maschine… ;-(
