This is a follow up to the tutorial on recording Maschine scene changes in your daw via program changes here: https://maschinetutorials.com/understanding-the-different-scene-playback-sync-and-trigger-settings
This one is a little easier to setup, it just assigns midi notes to each scene
I’m using Studio One in this tutorial but it will work in any DAW you may be using

That Is Sick! You just opened up a ton of ideals for me! Thanks SJ! you did ya thang on this one!
Cool! Remember once you record this, you can send all your sounds to multiple outputs in your daw and have your performance tracked out 🙂
okay that was my concern, I thought, why would I use this if I can’t individually track all the groups and sounds out!!
Pretty cool now that I understand
Yeah, this is just recording the midi, so it just “tells it” when to play, it has nothing to do with output routing, you can still do all that after recording your “performance”
You could also trigger it from your midi keyboard and not even mess with the midi control mode.
Mane in my Denzel Washington voice with a cigarette in my mouth, in the movie training day. 😉
lol, no doubt son!
Ohhh that’s nasty right there! Another door opened. I could use my Akai MPD 32 for the midi triggering part.
yep, any midi controller you got, I just showed it with Maschine of course, but will work with mpd, apc, midi keyboard, midi foot pedals, midi drums….you get the idea.
It’s all midi. You could even draw the midi notes in if you want.
Can you do with Sonar X1?
Yes, anything that let’s you record MIDI.
Whoaaaa this is crazy.. Especially with that “scene repeat” when you hit the same pad!
Word man, can def be useful yo
Hey Saintjoe, first of all, a HUGE thanks for this site, jesus christ, I was about to start crying and searched in hope of help to find anything to help me getting started with Maschine. I knew half the basics of Maschine, but now I can simply start USING it! I love it! so million thanks for this, I’ll be checking this site out at all times. You guys are awsome. Now to the point: I’m into electronic music, such as house and trance and I’m using Maschine as a beatmaker inside of my DAW (Logic Pro 9). Now my… Read more »
Glad you dig the site man 🙂
What I would suggest is making sure you set your scenes to respond to midi, but not your sounds. That way, you can send the midi track to Maschine to record your scenes but it will not trigger your sounds. Also, make sure you put Maschine in midi control mode when doing it, OR you can trigger it from your keyboard keys.
If that doesn’t work, you can try using program changes instead of midi notes, it works similar it just depends on how your DAW handles program changes sent to plugins.
Hm, didn’t really get this one here. I’ve tried to set it to midi, hehe, but it doesn’t really work that way either it seems :/
what I didn’t do though was get into MIDI Control mode. Or actually I tried to get into MIDI control mode, but I couldn’t select scenes through it, I dunno why?
Program changes, I’m not sure if it exists in Logic, and how it works hehe. Logic and Maschine really is a pain in the ass! Hate that Logic made it so complicated :/
You have to see which midi notes they are responding to, when in midi control mode you will probably have to hit the group buttons a few times to change the notes that the pads send out, it will go up and down the keyboard depending on which group button you hit. Each will set the pads to a different set of notes. Try around group C or higher.
OH and as for fx you can send individual instruments out into Logic using external outputs so that you can apply fx as you wish.
similar to this, without the recording part

This video is really great! but is there any video for midi? I don’t want it in audio, I want it in midi 🙂
Cheers alot for the answers man! Very useful stuff.
I showed you that because you asked to apply fx to separate sounds, you can’t apply audio fx to midi data, so you have to route the audio out to apply fx to it. Unless you apply the fx inside Maschine to each sound you want.
oh really? that’s really weird, so you cannot apply ANY effects to the MIDI? eventhough you bus the way you showed me in the video? kinda weird :/
I’m actually very surprised by this, since it’s possible in all daws, using all plugins
You are not applying fx to midi, you are applying it to the audio. Midi is not audio. Unless you are using specific “midi fx” which some daws like ableton have that alter the actual sequencing data, you can’t do it. When you load a plugin in a daw, and apply fx, that’s is applying the fx to the audio of the plugin, it’s just that most of the time the midi data and audio streaming is on the same track. Inside maschine, you can apply fx to any sound/pad, group, or master. It would appear you are applying it… Read more »
Back in March, I figured this out, but after several months away (due to a few life dramas) I’ve had to start from scratch… So I have this track I was working on a few months ago…I recorded the midi scene changes into Cubase, but Maschine isn’t responding/receiving. I’ve also tried re-recording the scenes – and that aint happening either.. Here’s where I’m at…. Maschine is in Midi mode. I have ‘Scene Midi Settings’ set to MIDI Note with root note set to C0, which corresponds to the same in the controller editor (pad 1 is set to C0, etc..),… Read more »
make sure the Cubase track is record enabled and receiving midi from the Maschine controller. Make sure Maschine is setup as a midi input device in Cubase settings.
I don’t think the glitch is in Cubase…. 1. Maschine is loaded as a VST (in Cubase, on channel 1) and in Midi control mode. ‘Scene Midi Settings’ are set to MIDI Note on Channel 1, root note set to C0. 2. The 1st pad in the controller editor GUI window is set to C0. 3. When I hit the pads on Maschine, the Controller Editor GUI responds and changes to the corresponding pad, but nothing happens actually in the Maschine Arranger window. The scenes don’t switch….just stays on the same scene. 4. Cubase records the midi data being played… Read more »
It sounds like you don’t have the midi routed back to the maschine vst, midi must be routed to the vst for it to work. Setup a midi track and point it to the vst track and it should work
Yea, I have several midi tracks recorded in cubase from when I worked on the track a few months ago (when it was working), all set-up to fire midi data back to the Maschine VST on channel 1. I also recorded a new midi track just now from hitting the pads – cubase recorded it and is sending it back ok because the midi indicator on the Maschine VST plug-in flashes at the corresponding midi data. The thing that confuses me… when I hit the Maschine pads in Midi Mode, the Controller Editor GUI responds and changes to the corresponding… Read more »
should be working unless maschine isn’t configured properly or the midi isn’t getting back on the proper notes/channel. It sounds like you have everything setup properly but it has to be something missing. I can try to set i tup in cubase but I only have cubase 6 elements, not sure if it will make a difference or not.
yea….that’d be well appreciated,,,, I can send you the track by dropbox – it should load in cubase elements just fine.
that would be cool so I could look at the setup

Appreciate this – as I’m sure you’ve got better things to do!!!
That’s what I’m here for man, it’s my job to check it out lol. I’ll see what I can see 🙂
link not working, you can invite me to the folder if you wish saintjoe@soundsandgear.com
OK fam, I figured it out. You have everything setup properly but the problem was, you had the Reaktor sounds set to receive on the same channel as your scenes. They were both set to midi channel one, so the sound took precedence over the scenes. So your midi input was being routed to the sound. If you disable “sound midi settings” for that Reaktor pad you have loaded or if you put it on a different channel, it will work properly 🙂
Maaan, feels good to get that sorted. Nice work Joe ! Really appreciate it.. I learn’t 2 valuable lessons here 1. you can’t have incoming midi routed through the same channel going to 2 sounds, and 2. you’re well worth your $9.99 monthly “consultancy” fee. haha Still trying to figure out the best way to use Maschine’s playability to bring controlled spontaneity to my overly sequenced tracks. So I’m thinking that if I have 2 instances of Maschine running, I can use Scenes to switch out drums … and play em’ in live, while instance 2 can play the other… Read more »
well you could have midi going to the same sounds, I do that when I want to stack instruments, but going to sound/group and scenes will not work.
Glad you got it man 🙂
Joe, is the ability to record pattern changes in version 1.8 looking likely? that’d save you having to run multiple instances.. so when you do your scene switches, you’re not affecting your other parts.
they haven’t mentioned anything like that so far in the forums/update info.
Oh man I think you’ve done gave me another reason to stay up late at night with this one. Especially after viewing a recent video by Mike Huckaby: http://youtu.be/3gIt9IdUzl0 A question (or two) if I may: 1. in following your process, is it possible to mute the group of a particular scene and it be recorded in the DAW as such? Or would it just be more sensible to create an alternate scene where the mutes are in place? 2. Correct me if I’m wrong, but your method of recording scenes should work with a midi keyboard? I ask thinking… Read more »
nice man, love to spark the late night sessions
1. This is only for triggering the actual scene, doesn’t record any mute information
2. I suggest doing this from your keyboard if you have more than 16 scenes, it works perfectly.
Hey SJ great Tutorial… Amazing technique.
But I would like to understand i saw your comment before… How can I send all my sounds to multiple outputs in the daw and have my performance tracked out? As I’m a Logic user, never done that before and if it’s possible you kind of help me with that.
I appreciate it!
Glad you liked it man, check this tutorial Knock did on tracking out audio in Logic
https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-in-logic-pro-tracking-out-audio-in-real-time/
Quick question, how do you have a note from scene 1 run into my next scene? As soon as the scene 1 sound hits scene 2 the note stops playing even though I was holding it down.
Thanks,
Randy
The sounds don’t carry over into the next scene, there is no overlap. So if you’re holding the note in one scene, there is no information for it to carry over into the next one.
