What’s good MT fam!
This is another tutorial in the maschine in ableton live tutorial series, and is actually a continuation of the maschine in ableton live workflow part 2 tutorial
This tutorial specifically explains the fundamental difference between using a midi track routed to the plugin track for the first group, where the audio and midi data is on separate tracks, versus using an external instrument device which puts the midi and audio data all on the same track.
I explain why if you like to freeze & flatten your tracks you will want to use the external instrument track every time.
I also explain why using external instrument tracks for each channel will cause you to loose one channel of audio.
enjoy, as always, ask questions if you have them!

Thanks Saint !!! U just mad my life Ezer, lol
NO doubt fam, glad to help!
what do you do with your tracks when working the other way ?
Just keep them as midi or do you convert to audio ?
I keep them as midi mostly, do my arranging, then record my arrangement into the arrange view. I will have a video on that as well as part of the series.
cool can’t wait,so i assume you really dont mess with editing audio much?
Not unless I want to do some funky stuff to it as a sample, or if I’m pulling samples in. But when I’m sequencing I usually leave it all as midi until I’m done.
Cool I didn’t realize there was a choice! sweet.
yeah brotha lol
Sj Do An Work Flow With Studio One How To Track Out In It
you can’t “track out” in Studio One, because you can’t record audio directly from vst plugins (been requesting it)
But here is how you route audio
https://maschinetutorials.com/sequencing-maschine-in-your-daw-part-3-routing-audio-properly
I was just messing around and realized that after recording a pattern within Maschine, you can drag that midi pattern into Ableton as audio like? Cool…
Yep, quick drag and drop.
Okay… messing around some more. Just tried to set things up the way you described but it doesn’t work for me. However I am able to record midi notes into Ableton with a slightly different routing setup. Not sure why that is. Could it have something to do with the midi preferences in Ableton? How do you have Maschine configured in Ableton’s midi preferences?
Your setup doesn’t look any different, you’re receiving midi from the maschine track and sending it to the maschine track, that’s how it’s supposed to be.
In Ableton:
External Instrument Track:
MIDI FROM Input Type- Maschine
MIDI FROM Input Channel- Maschine
External Instrument Device:
Routing Target- Maschine
MIDI To- 1-Maschine
In Maschine Plugin:
Group A Out is set to Out-1
and
Sound Midi Batch Setup- Sounds to Midi Notes is selected
and set to Midi Channel 1
And with this set up I’m able to record midi notes to Ableton. Why the difference?
Thanks Fam!
Not sure what your saying, but that’s the same way I’ve set it up. Maschine should be turned on as in input device in ableton preferences so it receives midi from it.
Thanks bro. Pardon the complicated attempt at describing my setup.
No problem, you’re doing it right 🙂
Dear SJ ,
Just following the maschine inside ableton vids and everything seems to be working but I discoverd that when I set the sound midi batch up in group B on sounds to midi notes – midi channel 2 that automaticaly it changes also sounds to midi notes on group A to midi channel 2 (instead of 1) ?
Can you figure out why ? It seems like I cannot choice different midi channels … ?
Thanks !
Hey bro, it’s actually not changing the midi channel. The midi batch setting is actually a batch process, so it just changes everything in the current group. However, it that menu, you will only see the last setting you’ve made. You won’t actually see a different channel for each group, even though they are on different channels. I, and many others have requested this to actually reflect the proper midi channel, but since it’s not actually a setting but just a “command” this is how it is for now. To quickly see which channel each group is on, I use… Read more »
Just gotta say that I’m loving the knowledge, would have been sooooooo lost without this series. Cheers saintjoe! 😀
awesome!! Glad it’s helping you, let us know if there is something you need further help with.
to make this work do you have to have a soundcard with multi channels or anything special because I have been trying for almost a week now and I cant get this work at all. I set everything up with the external instruments the way you have and every track on maschine the way you have but I cant get it to work at all
Do you have Maschine loaded as a plugin inside of Ableton? You don’t need a special soundcard to do this as all the audio is handled by Ableton
Ok, I think I understand enough to ask the right question 🙂 In 3:08, you flatten a drum clip. My question, is how did that clip get INTO ableton with this setup?!
I recorded the midi directly in ableton and used maschine as a sound module/plugin
aha got it! THAT’S the difference between workflow 5 and this workflow then … I’ll have to re-watch 5 and see how the routing is different. I’m so used to maschine at this point (although I love live) that I prefer to do the sequencing in maschine
Right, that one is specifically for those who sequenced in Maschine. But the routing itself is still the same in terms of getting midi from Live to trigger Maschine.
Is there a way of doing this type of set up in Maschine 2.0?
I love working this way because I love being able to record whatever midi i play from Maschine straight into an ableton clip…
But since buying Maschine 2.0 i am struggling to work out how? Has anyone got any work arounds for 2.0?
They changed everything, trying to do it this way with 2.0 causes a bunch of midi feedback now based on how they did it. Check the video I did on drag and drop midi to get an idea of the process involved now…it’s wack smh.

Thanks, guess i will have to change my approach when using 2.0 now
I’ve found that it works but it’s a hassle you have to keep disabling the channel so you don’t monitor it to block the feedback, it’s really not fun. I hope they make it easier, and what you have to do to set up each pad is very time consuming, which changes when you load a new kit 🙁
