Yooooooooooo MT Fam! We getting close to the end of the Maschine in Ableton Live tutorial series….maybe 😉
At least you should now have a good foundation of how to work with Maschine inside of Ableton
In this video I show the 3rd way of working with them together, using Live to “track out” or record the arrangements and/or performance from Maschine

WOOOOOOOOW… again WOW!!! This is what I’ve been talking about Saintjoe. This is the workflow for me man. This vid alone would make me mess with Live.
Why can’t S1 just do that simple task? You got me excited with this one Big homie! Right now a brotha is torn between S1 and Ableton…decisions…decisions.
CRAZY!!!
I knew you would bruh lol…I just been trying to keep it all in an order that makes sense…sorta build it up 🙂
Why doesn’t s1 do this? I have no clue, I’ve been asking for years lol
Don’t sleep on it bruh, there’s a reason I used this exclusively before Maschine lol
You never lie dude! I shoulda known better than to doubt the Master LOL hahah
Just stuck right now man, but gotta make a decision quick, got some projects I need to get started on yesterday.
You doing the S1 and Ableton vids back and forth ain’t helping man, you selling me on both LOL ahahhahahah
HELP!
I like them both…ableton fits me better but I like the linear/”final” mixing aspects in S1.
I think you would personally get more use out of Ableton first…maybe on down the line you may want to add S1.
Then again, it depends on what you planning to, when it comes to recording vocals and stuff…I like the layout in S1 better, but I know folks that do it all in Ableton.
your going ham with this ableton+maschine and the beat you made was cool too. thanks i just found my ideal work flow
Thanks fam, finally had some time to finish up the stuff I had planned to show yall, glad yall can use it.
I haven’t even watched this yet, but THANK YOU BROTHA!!!! I knew it was coming. I know how you do, and it’s going to be like heaven to watch later on the train home. Hopefully I get a consistent signal, or I’m gonna be making people look at me crazy lol
hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa 🙂
I couldn’t wait til I got on the train home. Watched on my lunch break. HOMIE!!! First burrito is on me!!! Lol
Here is why this particular method is so important to me. For one, now I can do tempo changes and my samples will time stretch. Also, now I can chop up tracks if need be with Ableton’s excellent chop abilities. And since it’s pretty much tempo sync’d, the bars already line up. Now I can actually finish a track I needed to do a tempo change in!
Yessir!!! I told you I had something for ya man lol
I know you did…and I’m lovin it!
Good brotha!
Joe you did did did it it it again again again. MT is Able LOL.
Ahahahaha, no doubt fam!! We Able for sure!
YUP! That I never thought of,that is sweet! Is that how MPC folk do it? Thanks Joe!
Glad to help man. Yeah back in the day, with the mpc, we’d have to do it one track at a time unless you had the 8 output expansion, then you could do 8 tracks at a time lol. But you needed to have 8 inputs on your soundcard to get into the computer unless you was in a studio tracking into a protools rig or something.
So this right here…is NIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE lol.
Yo SJ, I’m starting to loose my cool w Ableton!! I went and tried the workflow you are showing us, and this thing must have crashed at least 6 times during the process…Ableton has to step up their game this is getting ridiculous, they have been trying to fix Version 8 for a long time now…I downloaded 8.26 the other day and I’ve been having all kinds of problems!!
Really? I haven’t had any crashes at all, even with the early versions. It’s been super stable for me. That sucks bruh!
It might be a Mac thing, but I follow their forum and people have been frustrated w version 8 for a minute…I never experienced any hiccups until I started using it more for production (Vsts, routing to daws.Etc) I used Ableton live and serato in my Dj set up for years and never had an issue with it…what version are u running?? I might try downgrading back to like 8.2 0r something…
I’m on 8.2.6 bro 🙂
Hey well I have v8.2.7 on my MacBook Pro & v8.2.5 on my iMac with no issues running Ableton and Machine. Maybe you have to many things (plugins) inserted. I’m not sure in your case but Ableton only slows when I load up the master, channels, and groups. I’m extreme at times. Lol
Good luck.. On the newer Intel Mac it’s the Command key now.
Great work on the videos.
Good news fam, thanks for the feedback!
SJ: Indeed, the CTRL key on PC is equivalent to APPLE key on Mac.
So now you know for sure :0)
Keep up those rocking’ vids !!
Best,
Rob.
Cool, that’s what I thought lol… thanks man 🙂
The Apple key’s proper name is the command (cmd) key. 😉
Is it? lol, that’s why I keep getting confused, I keep saying command or apple key, whatever it’s called mahwhahahahaha lol
Lol yeah. On the new keyboards the Apple isn’t there anymore cause it caused too much confusion. Lol
WOW….I don’t feel as bad now lol
Copped that Ableton live 8 suite yesterday and going get Studio One 2 tomorrow. Me and Russ are going be compatible with our workflows (Ableton). We going need some technical advice homie!
Thanks in advance.
Ahahahahaa, yeah he told me he got it the other day, you know I got ya back…I don’t know it all, but what I know I’ll share 🙂
Me too 🙂 me too me too!!!
Hahahaha….
LOL @ Nekk, what’s up man? You silly!
Lol…I’m a mess bro.
this is dope! never thought of this!….
just made my template… lets go!!
Word fam, get it rockin!
HOT HOT HOT FIRE MAN !!!!! very informative vid and that beat is heat… i demand an mp3 of it right now !!!!
Hahahaha, thanks brotha lol, it’s already sent out to my boy for his album, we’ll see what happens 🙂
I have a question~
when I use maschine in ableton live drum rack as a controller.
but maschine pad velocity was all the same !
why does it?
You can adjust your pad velocity using the controller editor program, maschine as a midi controller is velocity sensitive, also make sure you don’t have anything set in drum racks to make it not respond to velocity. I can’t say that I’ve run into that issue before.
thank you~
No problem, keep me posted
hey SJ ive been messing with Abelton live demo in my free time on my labtop and i really like the warp and slicing feature with it. I was wondering if theres a way to drag and drop or export your warped sample/slices into maschine so you can sequence in maschine? looking for a video on the site but nothing is close. maybe you can do a video?
maschine should add that feature sometime in the future becuz to me thats better than time strentching.
I hear ya bro 🙂
I’ll look into it, I can’t think of anything other than browsing to the file in the browser, it keeps all your samples for the current project in one location
Record ableton’s sample into the maschine sampler, just got to figure out the routing, should be easy
yeah you could do that with loopback, but it seems he wants the individual slices. I would just record it back in like you said in realtime and slice in Maschine, but there’s various ways of getting the audio out via exporting.
Type your comment here…
About to gibe this a try man. Would love to see how to set that template up to be reused.
Can’t see what I”m typing, just came back from the eye dictor blind as a bat lol
Ahahahaha, just save whatever you want to use as a template, as a project, so you can open it any time you wish.
Great tutorial Sj, just got everything set up, good to go… gonna throw this new dance track i done into ableton to mix and master it.. just i’ve got a lot going on in the drums, far more than the 16 outs will allow me to track them out individually..it looks like i will just have to do the drums in groups, but is there anyway to get extra outputs?…
You can use mono tracks by panning stuff hard left and hard right. That turns 16 stereo tracks into 32 mono tracks.
cool, just went ahead and tracked it in groups but will defo know for next time… trying to find mastering tips for ableton but seems like it’s all done with third party plug ins or engineers.. gonna just mix as well as i can for now…
word man, no doubt
Great tutorial, as always.
One question that does not have anything to do directly with the issue. Is there a website for Ableton Live, which is about as good as maschinetutorials.com?
Greetz from Germany
Thomas
Not that I know of, we are one of a kind 🙂
But there are some good ableton tutorials out there though, just not a site/community like we have here 🙂
I’ve been trying to find something to get away from Logic. It’s just too complex for me. I think this tutorial alone got me excited about Live. Thanks, SJ for helping me make my decision. I’m switching to Live!
word man, check the demo for sure and see if you dig it
Man, I wish I had remembered this one the other day!
Good stuff this SJ!
cheers bro!
Yes. man.. Thanks!. I was stumped on getting the audio routed in. Had my Aha moment while watching this vid.
bam..
that’s what I like to hear fam, good stuff!!
Hey St. Joe, you like the sequencer in Maschine better than live? U find its easier to just hammer it all out in Maschine first vs live? Just wondering 😉 Thanks again!
I prefer sequencing in Maschine over Live, it’s much more immediate. I imagine if live had it’s own controller similar to maschine, it wouldn’t be such a difference. Apc is nice, but you don’t really bang out beats with it, just control stuff. But Live’s sequencer is dope for sure, I used it before I got Maschine…I just prefer Maschine now, the whole workflow is killer.
Greta video now I know I got two get me another screen. to help the workflow
no doubt fam, glad to help
what did I miss Joe bpm in Maschine 85 but in live it stays at 120….. need it to sync
it should automatically sync since it is being used as a plugin
Thanks again. ~RTP….Later
No problem, glad they are helping you out!
Dear Sj
I ve found this tutorial of you on loop masters. I cannot seem to find it in more detail on MT. Do you use ext instr in ableton for track 1-3 ? is there a first part of the video ? thanks !
Which tutorial did you see on loopmasters? I have posted quite a few tutorials for Ableton, check these out
https://maschinetutorials.com/?s=ableton+live&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
Loopblog … http://www.loopblog.net/tutorials/daw-tips/maschine/ableton-live-and-maschine-ableton-as-vst-plugin-rack/
Cool thanks man, yeah checkout all those other Ableton vids, as you can see, I dig Ableton 🙂
But I there also a video where you explain your method in depth regarding this video
http://www.loopblog.net/tutorials/daw-tips/maschine/ableton-live-and-maschine-ableton-as-vst-plugin-rack/
because you don t explain the routing in the video above … are the 1st 3 tracks in ableton ext instruments ?
thanks
In that video, it’s just straight midi, I have the plugins loaded inside of Ableton and I’m sending midi from Maschine to Ableton.
Yo Peace Joe, This is exactly what I got Maschine for. However, I upgraded to maschine studio and for some reason it wont work. I am not sure if I am doing it right, I go to group, then to output and set it to Ext. 2 for the next audio track and so on….I get no sound, and get no sound on any channel either in my maschine or my ableton channels. Am I doing something wrong?? My first thought was that I didnt have something routed correctly in Maschine with my midi, but Im honestly at a loss.… Read more »
No doubt, I’ll do a new video showing how to route in Ableton Live 9 with Maschine 2.0
Damn that was quick, thanks bro!
No problem! I’ll knock it out for you in the morning fam!
Yo can you shoot me a link when the new tutorial is up?
My bad fam, today been mad busy, will get it for you though and let you know when it’s up, may be later tonight or tomorrow though had a lot going down today lol.
Ay no problem man, I just dont wanna miss it. Besides Im outta town till sun anyway
Here ya go bro!
