Hey what’s good fam?
As you may know by now, the 2.2 update for Maschine has released, and while many are excited about the chord, arp, and scale features, there’s some other things that got fixed.
For those that used to record MIDI into their host in real-time, you know that Maschine 2 changed how this was done and made it a true pain.
Well they added an update that makes it a little bit easier and I did a quick video to show how it’s done.
Of course if you have any other videos about 2.0 feel free to ask and we’ll make sure you get the info you need.

Yo Joe have u started videos showin how to use the arpeggiator, chords, and the new features
Yeah, I’ll be uploading some tomorrow, let me know if there’s anything specific you want to see.
arpeggiator, chords or sound Is it as you can uploading ?
I’m not sure what exactly your question is, can you explain what you are looking for?
Can the audio also be routed to each separate midi track in ableton ( creatief a miditrack with audio coming out asiel on that same track) instead of going to the maschine instance track? And are there any changes made so you can have automation lanes in the miditracks you send the audio and midi to instead of having all the automation show up in the maschine instance track?
Creatief= creating
Asiel= also
Stupid autospelling on my IPad. Sorry for that…
Yeah you can still route the audio as normal, if you want to use the audio on an external instrument track you can choose it at the bottom where you choose the midi.
If you want to automate Maschine it would have to be on the Maschine track as far as I know as that’s where the parameters would show up.
Hey Joe. I’m new to the site and it’s been very helpful so far, so thanks. I followed this tutorial step by step and everything worked great until the very end. When I went to record a pattern, I saw that the midi notes were being captured on Ableton. However, when I go to play it back, there is no sound. Can’t figure this out.
Check your routing for the external instrument, make sure it’s pointing back to Maschine on the proper channel and that you’ve setup the MIDI input as required.
Hey Joe,
Love the site man! I’m on Live 8.4.2 and after watching the vid on 2.1 and now 2.2 along w/ vids from NI’s knowledge base I have a prob. Specifically, no midi data appears in live and it doesn’t activate the different external inst’s when I record activate in Live. I do hear the machine though. Any idea for 8.4.2? Thanks!
Make sure you actually have the midi/external instrument track record enabled, and setup to receive midi input from the track you have Maschine on. If you want, you can submit a ticket and attach the project so I can take a look at the routing. https://maschinetutorials.com/help/
Also, I added a 2nd external instrument on Ableton to use for my group B sound. When I went to change the routing in Maschine, I noticed that some of the options were different. For example, there was no “HOST” option when choosing the sound destination under output. The only options were “None” and “Mashine 2 virtual output”. The 2nd difference was when I went choose the group input. There was active switch to simply turn on. Instead it was a source drop down with choices in it. All this confused the hell out of me to say the least.… Read more »
There’s nothing that should change inside of Maschine, you have to set host output at the sound level but other than that it should be ready to go.
Make sure you’re opening Maschine as a plugin inside of Ableton and not as a standalone application.
Why’d you transpose the outputs?
I mean inputs… you transposed them?
Because by default Maschine’s kits start at c3, so that’s to make sure they receive the proper notes
Can I still route everything inside of ableton live light via maschine studio or will there be problems because I don’t have the suite versions ???
I think you don’t have as many tracks in lite but that’s it, you should still be able to route but I haven’t checked lite in a while.
Can you make a vid showing me how to do this inside of studio one… I’m not educated on ableton, and also don’t have the full version of ableton which would limit my scenes, groups and a whole bunch of stuff…
I have the full version of studio one.
I apologize if posting the link was against the rules Saint Joe…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfksY10mJ5c
My fault, I don’t want you to make a gospel track, If you can do the video, I just want you to make 8 scenes….
I’m not sure what you’re asking, the video you posted is just a video using Ableton clips and has nothing to do with Maschine at all.
Are you trying to make S1 work like Ableton? If so, that’s not how it works as it doesn’t have any scene/clip setup.
I got the hang of ableton live…. I want to take my loops out of maschine studio and place them into the scenes inside of ableton live and control them with the apc mini… I apologize for the badly getting my point across…
Oh yeah, you can do a drag and drop then, really simple. https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-0-drag-and-drop-audio-into-ableton-live-9/
Appreciate you Saint-Joe big time
Glad to help.
Did you create that label for that track External Instrument? I was trying to find it inside of ableton, but I cant….
No, it’s just one of the built in instrument devices in Live. Not sure if it’s in Live Lite though.
Do I have to use the External Instrument track or can I use the maschine track or the midi track?
You can use a midi track and audio track to do the same thing, but then again Live Lite has limited number of tracks you can use I believe.
Cubase 8 mac please 🙂
Knock has Cubase 8, I’ll see if he can remake this video with it.
Yes indeed I am on it !
Thanks 😀
Hello, I’m trying to do what you show in the video but I can receive any signal in the MIDI track or External instrument track except the Maschine track. I do all you do but I realize that unlike you, my Ableton 9 only have two posibilities in the second “MIDI from”: Pre Fx and Post Fx. What do you think about it? What happen?
I apologize for my english mistakes and my way to explain because I’m spanish and I’m still learning english.
Thank you.
I’m gonna guess you’re on Mac, if so, make sure you use the VST plugin as AU plugins do not support MIDI output.
Yes, I’m on Mac. What I have to do exactly? How do I make sure I use VST plugin?
Thank for your answers.
In Live preferences you can set it to use VST plugins
Yeahhhh. Finally!!!!! Thank very very much!!!! I’ve tried this so many times and so long…… You are simply the best. Is it possible to do this in Pro tools?
Glad to help! Pro Tools doesn’t support this type of routing between tracks so it won’t work the same way. You’d have to put the controller in MIDI mode.
Hi Joe,
I am having some issues recording the chords midi into ableton, I am on pad mode with the keyboard selected
I have set the mode to chord set and chosen the sort of chord I want (Min 3)
I have done everthing you said to do in the vid but i cant seem to get it recording the chords midi into ableton?
I must be doing something wrong, is there anything you can think I need to do?
All the best
Justin
In that case set the individual pad to output midi to the hoat and receive on its own midi channel instead of the whole group.
Thanks SaintJoe!!
Works a treat! 🙂
Glad to help!
Hey Saint Joe, hope your well!
I am having an issue which probably can be solved quickly. When I hit any of the pads, it plays the previous pad sound (once) before it plays the correct sound? Then if I play a different pad it will then play the most recent pad once again and so on.
Can you help at all?
All the best
Justin
Never heard of that, I’d say double check your MIDI routing and transpose settings to make sure it’s set to send/receive on the proper notes.

This is a limitation of Ableton itself, the quickest way to get your midi patterns into Ableton is drag and drop because you can’t choose which channel to receive from when sending midi from a plugin track.
That is really odd they haven’t added that feature after all those years. Embarrasing!!!
I know I can do it in Cubase, but I don’t have it on my laptop.
Is it possible in Bitwig? Or any other DAW/ sequencer that is not to pricey?
I know about the drag and drop loop thing and that I can play it Live in Live. But that is not what I want to do.
Thank you for the suggestion!
Yeah, not sure why they haven’t added it. Works in Studio One though.
Ok, this is what I found out: As I am a Cubase Pro 8 user I tried to record a live session from already made patterns into miditracks. With the input transformer to filter the input midi channels this works like a dream some trying and failing. I am really happy I found a way doing this, because it is so easy going back and edit the arrangament, fx and levels. I also found out I can record (automate) the master macros through the whole track. For me this is the best and easiest rework of what I think the… Read more »
Awesome, yeah man when you have a DAW that can filter like that you can really get creative. I know Studio One allows you to pick your midi channels internally so you could multi track MIDI in there as well. Glad you found a workflow that works for you man! Hopefully one day Ableton will add this ability for those that wish to do it in there.
Hey Saintjoe I was wondering if you could help me? I have been following this video and I also watched the 2.1 workaround video as that one shows how to record separate audio for each maschine group. I can get the midi to work for one group and it records into ableton and plays back nicely. But as soon as I add more groups in maschine sounds overlap and i can seem to split the audio. What I’m try to achieve is have a separate midi channel in ableton to capture midi each group in maschine. Hope you can help… Read more »
The problem is with Ableton, it doesn’t let you split the midi channels coming from a plugin track.
Ah thats a shame so I can only capture midi from one group in Maschine?
Could I set up one instance of maschine on say channel 1 and another instance on Maschine on channel 2?
With how Live works, separate instances may be best, the problem is you can’t designate which midi channel you’re receiving from/sending, it just receives midi from the track in general. But again, it’s an Ableton thing, for example, in Studio One, you can specific the actual channels when doing internal routing.
I’ve just watched the older video where you create the midi host group. Would that be the best workaround to use?
I thought with Maschine 2.2 they made it easier?
Hi, Just did all the routing you showed above but when I listen back the midi track i’ve dropped into ableton is playing back ON TOP of the original maschine playing. I feel like i want to disable a “local off’like on a keyboard..what to do? p.s. all my midi throughs are OFF. thnx
You’d have to switch to an empty pattern or scene so you don’t hear the pattern in maschine.
Thnx that works!
So can we have multiple groups playback from ableton in midi?
Yep, if you give them different midi channels.
Hi, I have a question. When I load a new sample into a specific pad , I would have to do the setting again to allow recording into my daw. Is there a way to have the midi setting as default ? Looking forward to hearing from you,
its working now. I made up an imaginary problem. 🙂
Yeah, if you change samples it will be fine, but if you change the group, it will reset everything unfortunately.
Another question, if I duplicate sounds (pads) that means the midi channel assigned to that pad will be duplicated as well. Any ways around this??
No way around it as you are duplicating the pad.
So we are not able to retain the output setting when duplicating the pad? s it possible to edit this behaviour through some kind of script?
No, it’s just how Maschine handles it’s settings, it’s been a long standing request to update it
thanks again!!
Glad to help!
Another one I can’t figure out. Say I wanted to set all 16 Banks, A-H to record midi into LIVE9. I setup 16 midi tracks, 1-16. Track A will have an instance of MASCHINE , the other 15 will each have an instance of EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT, but there are only 15 audio outputs.
What would I need to do on TRACK 1 (with the maschine instance) to allow it to record midi msg from maschine pads directly as well. Thanks!!!
That’s the issue, you lose a channel because you can’t route the plugin track to itself. You can set it up so there is a separate midi track for channel 1 and use that to trigger the plugin track, leaving the main audio output on the plugin track.
2 things:
1. By using this method (recording a drum kit on to one channel is ableton), there is no way to mix the drum sounds on their own, correct? That’s something that’s pretty essential for mixing, correct?
2. Is there a way to overdub onto the ableton channel? I recorded a basic pattern (pretty much exactly the same thing you did). Now I want add percussion, extra sounds. When I record, those notes don’t show up in Ableton, yet show up in the Maschine pattern.
Thanks SaintJoe!
1. This is just midi, you could still mix the drums in Maschine or route them to their own channels in Live
2. Make sure you don’t rec enable Maschine and instead Rec enable the track in Ableton.
Hi again Joe. So ive been using FL Studio since 2004. Just this year I decided to take a step up. I’m on an IMAC 27′ with the Maschine Studio + Komplete Kontrol + Komplete Audio 6 interface with A Rode NTK covered in a Kaotica Eyeball. The KA6 doesn’t work on MAC because of the El Capitan so after much justification I ordered the AVID S3. I’m shopping for 2 New DAWS- one that runs my hardware for beats and one for Recording. I’m thinking Cubase and Protools with fl studio in the shadows until the perfectection of the… Read more »
Make sure you’re using the maschine midi track/vst as the input and not the maschine controller. Other than that it should work. Also make sure you’ve enabled midi output to the host from within the Maschine plugin.
Ok will do. Thanks. ill do it all over again and see if I really did all the steps correctly.
(oh btw. for some reason I don’t see if you respond unless I write a comment. which is why I see your answers late)
may be my browser.
Weird, make sure you subscribe to the comment and you’ll get an email 🙂
I would love to see you do a video specifically about using Maschine Studio and Live 9.5 just like this, but incorporate Push 2. I’ve come across some strange behavior when I tried this with Push 2.
What exactly are you seeing? I rarely ever use Maschine like this honestly, especially with Push, I’ve never really liked the whole process of setting up Midi with Maschine lol. Too much setup then if you want to change kits you have to set it up all over again smh
I’m not getting the host option on my midi out sound destination
Make sure you are on the sound level and not the group output.
Hey SJ, new to the learned alot so far. I’m looking for a way to do something similar like this, but I also want to be able to use abletons effects on specific sounds. Ex. If I want to add a reverb to a snare that is in maschine. Thank you!
Sorry for the delay kyle, welcome to the site! In that case you would need to route your sounds out into Live, check this out https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-0-recording-multiple-audio-tracks-into-ableton-live-9/
I’m having issue with this setup
What’s the problem?
