Here’s a video for those using Maschine 2.0 inside of Cubase and you want to record your MIDI data directly.
This tutorial shows how to setup the Maschine Studio in controller mode and how to configure the Maschine 2.0 plugin so that you can sequence your MIDI properly.
I also show how to set it up as a Mackie Control device so you have control of the Cubase transport from the Maschine controller
Make sure you download the templates below if you need it, or watch the Studio One Midi Sequencing video to learn how to make your own basic template for this.
If you need one made for the MK1 or Mikro just let me know

I’ll take a MK 1 template sir, whenever 🙂 thx! I’m assuming with this method you just showed we could also separate those drums to separate tracks in Cubase as well? Man U work hard I feel lazy lol!
Cool I will make one, yeah you could separate them if you want.
What’s good Saint Joe? I’m having an issue (Mac). When I add the Mackie Control, I don’t see an options available to me that say “Maschine” are Maschine Studio Port 1 and Maschine Studio Virtual Input. All of the assignment are working in the controller editor, except record. If I try to manually record from Cubase, not of the Maschine midi is recording, but it’s playing in Cubase fine. I’ve repeated the steps several times, but I’m still stuck. Any idea where I goofed?
On Mac you want to use the virtual input
Thanks fam! I’ll try again tonight.
Hi der Saint! tnx for dis awesome video.Ive tried all ur instruction but my maschine mk2 wont output midi frm d pads into cubase 7.My os is mavericks.Maschine 1.8 works perfectly.
Make sure you have the virtual midi port turned on in Cubase, also make sure you have it in midi controller mode.
tnx.tried dat too.Still having issues.
Do you have the track rec enabled? Did you set the notes on the pad properly?
hey SJ having probs can you give me a template for the MK1? Thanxs
Tnx SJ.I think i’ll wait till 2.05 is out.Maschine 2 still sucks as a plugin inside Daws.Pretty much half baked functions.1.8 is working alright for me.
Yeah it really does suck in Daws at the moment
Hi SJLooks like NI blinked again on the 2.05 update. Not happy with it buddy.
Yeah I didn’t expect it so soon, hopefully next time 🙂
Thank you SJ for this tutorial! Is a tutorial here that shows how to map any controller of Maschine Studio to controll any funtion of Cubase? Let say I’d like to make jog wheel to scroll through the track. If there is not, could you please show/write one example?
What you can map it to depends on what Cubase allows you to map to mostly, then you can assign Maschine the proper cc or midi message to do so, I would have to know if Cubase allows you to map external controllers to scroll through a track first, then I could probably figure out how to do it.
3 803,34
I will check what I can map to the external controler and try out that. Thanks!
mk1 templet doesent funktion
Had another member use it Ok, what part isn’t working for you? Did you setup maschine as a controller input in Cubase properly already?
need help
What isn’t working? Did you follow all the steps to set it up in Cubase, do you have maschine set in midi mode.
I need a template for Maschine MIKRO MK2, please 🙂
I’ll get one made for ya!
I just want to say that I became a member of maschinetutorials.com just because of this, but then I foud out tat this tutorial is only for working in MIDI mode (SHIFT F1) on the maschine. But I want to use the Maschine in standard mode. How can I do this?
They changed the MIDI implementation in 2.0 so it doesn’t work the same way anymore, if you want to do standard mode it may be easier to drag and drop after you create something in Maschine, as trying to send midi from Maschine into Cubase now causes a MIDI feedback loop.
You may be able to do it similar to this method https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-0-recording-midi-into-studio-one-2-in-real-time/
Your mk2 plugin I think needs to be .ncmm2 . That is what my control editor accepts right now. Can you send me a compatible file extension?
I’m running Cubase 7.5 + Maschine 2.0 + Maschine Mikro 2 + Control Editor (1.6.1)
So you need one for the Mikro MK2?
Yes brotha. That would be nice.
1) Also, when I’m in midi mode, the “note repeat” doesn’t work anymore. Have you looked into that yet?
2) In maschine 2.0, when my mouse selects a sound from the kit library selected, it only plays pad 1 sound. Do you have any idea why that may be happening? If not, that is ok.
Thank you!
1. yeah, note repeat is a function of the maschine software not the controller so it only works in Maschine mode
2. I’m not sure what you mean? In the browser?
1. ok, thanks!
2. No, pad/sound section. I’ll make a screencast and show you later.
Also, where can I find the plugin template for Mikro MK2?
Didn’t make the template yet
oh ok, when can we expect it? Thanks by the way for the support.
Added the link to download it now
I will be supporting you for a very long time. Keep it up. Thanks, really appreciate it!
Glad to help fam, let us know if you have any questions!
Comrades, I have made up my mind in what workflow I will use.. There are so many obstacles with the midi-madness, for example loading a kit which puts channel-settings back to default(transpose, root node etc), unable to trigger same sample on different semitones and so on and so on. So, this is what I will do: Have a default empty template in Maschine where I make the beat. Here I will do it the old fashion way like having a group containing everything from kicks to blip and blops. Just make a rough sketch of a beat and after a… Read more »
Hmmm, did you put the second instance in focus? I don’t use Mackie control (or cubase) often, I would imagine you should be able to control whatever is loaded in Cubase though as long as it’s active. What exactly are you doing with Mackie control in your setup?
I also prefer sequencing in Maschine myself.
I found out of it, have to do it through the Maschine controller by pressing SHIFT + PLUG-IN. So now everything is fabolous:) Through the Mackie I control Cubase transports and also use it to edit “on the fly” if needed. So now Im thinking of using two instances of Maschine, one for drums(everything which makes up the beat, kicks, snares, toms, hats, misc percs and noise), the other will be used for synths and bass. The important thing for me when working like this is to have access to the group which contains the beat, like the group where… Read more »
I was going to suggest that (switching instances using shift+plugin) but I wasn’t quite sure if that’s what you were looking for since you mentioned mackie mode I assumed you didn’t want to control the plugin instance directly lol. Either way, glad you found a workflow that you like!
Haha english is not my native language, as you can imagine:)
Yes, I feel this is a workflow which works for me and how I think I will be most efficient.
Be good and have a nice weekend!
Your English is fine man!
SaintJoe, hope you’re good man. Couple of things… For some reason, group 1 only seems to work in midi mode on midi ch1 for me in Cubase now. Just to make sure I’m not being a tool… In cubase I create two midi channels. 1 = Kit 2 = Synth Maschine is correctly routed to those channels and the generic Mackie set up is all in place (with your template) In Maschine, I drop a kit into group A, go to the input, activate and send to ch1. Then go back to Cubase, go into midi mode, lay down my… Read more »
When triggering synths you’ll want to set the midi channel for the specific pad you have the synth on instead of setting it like a group. But it should definitely work. As for the workflow in a DAW, it’s really no different in 1.8 in terms of the control you’re looking for. I don’t use Cubase enough to know the different commands it may be triggering via MIDI, or maybe it has to do with Mackie Mode?
Thanks man. I’ll give it a go. I’m pretty sure I tried that though. Do you mean that you set the midi for the “sound” as opposed to the “group”? If so, I tried that…
Yes, if you are trying to play an instrument instead of a kit you set the input for the sound and not the group, other than that it should be receiving MIDI input unless something else in Cubase is blocking it or not activated.
OK man. I’ll try giving it all a restart and trying it again.
Thanks buddy.
No problem man!
Hey mate Im new to maschine 2.0. I was using maschine 1.8 with a maschine Mk2 but now im using maschine 2.0 in Cubase 7 64bit. Now when I try load up maschine 2.0 and try get it to read a midi channel with multiple midi notes, all it does is play midi notes on one maschine sound like (keyboard mode) but doesnt play the other sounds in the same group. How do I get it working like in maschine 1.8? & also do you have a video how to recording midi notes with maschine2.0 software with a MK2 in… Read more »
Make sure you set the midi input for the group https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-0-with-maschine-studio-midi-sequencing-in-cubase/
Hi saintjoe,
Thanks for the tutorial and the template! I’m having a problem. When I use the transport buttons, they trigger MIDI notes. They also trigger the regular transport controls correctly. I’m not using a Maschine plugin here, just want to use Maschine as a MIDI controller for Cubase. Is there a way to stop the transport controls sending MIDI notes?
Thanks,
Avi
You could try using the Mackie template instead to see if it stops triggering those extra notes.
Hi St. Joe, I’m having a serious issue. Everytime I try to load Maschine 2.0 into my Cubase 7.5.20 (64Bit) as a vst intrument, everything just freezes! I end up having to “control, alt, delete” to get out of cubase to start over. I see on your video that you can at least get yours loaded to the vst track and actually play with it. With mine as so as add maschine 2.0 as a vst ints. and try to click anything, the screen goes white and freezes. I know its installed because its available in the cubase vst instrument tree.… Read more »

I would try removing the plugin from the folder and running the latest update to install the plugin again, maybe it got corrupted. There’s no setting I know of that would cause that issue.
I know this sounds stupid, but how do I remove it from the folder? I think I figured out how to remove it from the cubase vst folder. I beleive all my software is already up to date though. After removing it from the cubas folder, should I re-scan (update plug-in information) to try and get it to work?
Yeah I meant actually removing the dll file from the cubase vst folder then run the most recent update installer to install the plugin again
If you ever get Cubase 7.5, PLEASE do a video for it and Maschine 2.0 for a brother LOL. Your videos are soooo helpful
No doubt lol, it doesn’t work the same?
I don’t know how to remove the dll folder. I tried to uncheck it in the vst plug-in information box in cubase. its not showing up as a vst plug-in anymore in vst instruments, but I still see it unchecked in the plug-in info area of cubase
your preferences should list the actual folder it’s in, should be a vstplugins folder in your programs directory
One last question, then i’ll leave you alone LOL, where would I find the latest plug-in installer
it would just be the latest maschine update installer, you can grab it from your NI account
Thanks Joe, Good night from the DMV
No problem fam!
Can I still download a template for the MK 2?
Yeah, should be good to go
