If you’ve been watching youtube or even the Native Instruments site lately then you most likely know of Justin Aswell
As shown in the above video, he was featured in one of the NI Maschine video promos.
But those that know about Justin, part of Mr Invisible, know that he’s been drumming with his funky fingers way back since the Akai MPC 2000 XL was released.
Dude is one of those natural phenomenons, with dope eye-hand corrdination, finger dexterity, and funky rhythm!
I had a chance to carve some time out of his funky drumming schedule to pick his brain about finger drumming, maschine, mpcs, music, and whatever else we felt like talking about.
Including his afro!
HA!

Why can’t you listen? what happens? I think you’re gonna really dig this one man 🙂
SJ…Great interview man. long time fan of Justin Aswell…..that dude and Knock are the reason I bought maschine. having come from playing drums I try to get that live drum feel. Maschine is just a whole other animal. Translating what I would play on my kit to maschine is crazy hard but I’m getting there……..thanks to you guys showing me the way. big thanks to the Fam.
That’s dope Ken, Justin is a great dude, and we all know Knock is one of my favorite dudes of all time LOL.
But seriously man, I think as drummers you definitely have an advantage when it comes to rhythm so I know once you figure out what you need to do to translate that knowledge….gameover lol
glad you’re diggin the site fam!
haha no way. just got advice from him like 5 days ago via tumblr. was gonna mention him to yall
Justin is good peeps man lol
Loving this interview!
Just listening to the stuff about velocity sensitivity now. I might not be understanding right but if you arrow through to page six(hardware) of the Maschine sampler settings you can set velocity destination to 0% and then I think that makes sample always fire at 100%. You can do this independently for each pad.
Cool man, yeah I’ll have to check it out, if I remember off of the top of my head that is for assigning how much the velocity will effect certain modulations (pitch, amp, filter, etc), but I think you may be right if it’s assigned to the amp/volume envelope it just may work 🙂
I usually want total control over my dynamics so I don’t use full velocity etc, even still, I agree that it should be more flexible.
nice
word brotha
Dude Seem Cool To Me, Fast Ass Fingers he Got
Def a cool cat man
Great stuff! I agree with his wish for better integration between Maschine and Traktor for DJ’s.
Indeed, and for producers like he said that want to do some freaky stuff in maschine using traktor 🙂
great interview fam. I really dig it. he shares A lot of the same views that we have. can’t disagree with anything he says here. and I have also been wanting traktor in maschine and vice versa … have been calling for that for a while. and that is gonna be one of the features that will eventually really set NI above any other me too gear that comes out… something of note about mikro… if you notice. it has a hole in the center underside. it is designed to fit right on top of a turntable with that hole… Read more »
LOL @ the spindle for the Mikro man, you crazy bro LOL, but yeah this was definitely nice man. Justin is a cool dude, I def agree with everything he stated.
you know, I mess with my velocity settings a bit and always came back to keeping it how it is. but I really agree I would love having a seperate curve just on my hi hats… I’d also like pad up triggering.
btw man Mr invisible is really just good music. and I have to agree with everything he says. and now…. lets get a David Haynes interview on here!!!
Hahahaha, David is the man dude! Sickness!!!
Thanks everybody! Just talked with Jeremy Ellis about pad sensitivity and it seems there is a solution. He’s posting about it now on his page here – https://www.facebook.com/JeremyEllisLive
Word brotha, thanks for the update man, I know there’s a few different things you can do with the velocity/amp envelopes at the sample level. However, I like the idea of quickly setting it as a pad mode 🙂
Oh yeah, this is a way AROUND the problem not the solution we were speaking of!
Indeed 🙂
I like quick easy fixes, manipulating the sample is definitely an option though, just adjusting the envelope. But if we were able to set full velocity per pad it would be a quicker way and easier to turn on and off on a whim.
All good though, the manual way works too!
love the part where you guys are talking about casual music fans or hobbyists just getting enjoyment from playing. All these fools who are so hyper sensitive on the interwebs are ridiculous. Thats what I love about these kinds of communities where like-minded people just enjoy geeking out on this shit and talking about gear and music.
Yeah man, it’s the truth! First thing people ask you when you make videos, to reviews, tutorials, or anything “where can I hear your music, are producing for any major acts?” Like it matters lol…what if a person just really loves music and sound? I say have fun no matter what, if you do it pro or just because! Spread the music! Thanks for the comment bro always appreciated.
true to his word, dope finger-drumming tutorial!

Yes indeed, I posted it in the forum as well

Yeah, I just love it man!

Good performance….loved the entire feel of it, make you wanna grab that maschine and beat the heck out the pads…lol. Thnx.
Word fam that’s what’s good! Get on there and bang out!
Excellent Interview!! The routine posted is great. I wonder where those samples come from.
