So it’s time to dive into Daw integration, this one is for Studio One users but the template and process will be very similar for most Daws
Actually the template should work for Maschine Studio in any Daw.
If you prefer to use your Daw to handle your Midi sequencing duties, this video will show you how to do so in Studio One.
I go through the basic setup of the MIDI for the Maschine 2 plugin, setting up an instrument track, and how to setup Maschine Studio as a controller for triggering MIDI.

sounds good that’s the next step for me I have noticed that some Maschine 1.8 Projects don’t open well and I’ve seen a few glitches like sounds like playing or plugins not being able to be loaded. I’m glad that I still kept Maschine 1.8 just in case I needed to go back. I would like to do automation with the controller in Studio One to do the things we can’t do in Maschine like drop out’s and stuff.
Daw projects that use 1.8 will not open them automatically with 2.0, also, your plugins will only open properly if you’ve actually set them up in 2.0 preferences. Some sound issues could come from the fact that there is no longer a group polyphony setting.
SJ, you off the chain. I noticed you had the S1 color scheme on the pads.
Ahahahahahahaha LOL
I even tried to reload them but it wouldn’t work under that program file, I wish there was a way to import the midi file from 1.8 tracks and have them adjust to 2.0 settings otherwise it’s a little headache to do so. You would think they would create a way for legacy compatibility with the songs you create that seems pretty fundamental to me. I suppose that’s where you come in to bridge the gap. It feels weird using 2.0 after going back to 1.8 some of those changes are going to take some getting use to like how… Read more »
Yeah, that’s an issue in general when moving from one version to another, kontakt, massive, mach five, halion, anything that changes numbers usually has this issue. I believe on Mac there is something in Logic that will migrate users from one version of Kontakt to the next, or ask them if they wish to..but it’s something specific to Mac that apple did. Not sure if it works with all plugins or not. I think there should be some sort of menu that comes up “hey, we see you’re using maschine 2, would you like to convert this project? ” and… Read more »
wut up sj can you still track out each pad using sound to midi notes and sound to midi channels in 2.0
When you say track out, do you mean audio? That’s usually what track out means. You can still set each pad to a midi channel if you wish also.
Hey Joe
Using a Maschine MK2 with Maschine 2.0 with Studio One 2.6.1 on Mac 10.8.5… Can’t seem to get my Maschine to transmit mid into S1 at all.. followed all the instructions in this video and some past ones… setup Maschine in my controllers list.. changed Group Input Midi channel to 1, made it active… nothing.
Setup my Control Editor Template to use the MCU just like yours in the video… can’t get S1 to respond to anything on my Maschine controller.
Any troubleshooting suggestions?
Did you set it up as both a Keyboard and a MCU/Mackie control device?
i did…
Is it in MIDI control mode? Did you activate the MIDI track for recording? Did you choose all channels in the setup?
stepping back from Control Mode for a moment… just trying to get Mk2 to transmit midi data into S1 but… yes i did activate the track for recording/monitor.. i setup the Machine as an external device and it’s using all midi channels
my controller keyboard plays all the notes in the group as you demonstrated… changing the group input to Active and using Channel 1 so that works … just confused about why Maschine doesn’t want to play nice 🙂
Maschine will only transmit as a midi device in controller mode so that would be how to test it. Also, check the midi channels you have setup in the template, that could be something to look at.
I do remember midi changing on mac at some point in 1.8, but not sure about 2.0 I will have to check it on my mac mini.
On Mac make sure you use the “maschine virtual input” instead of the controller input
SJ,
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I was sure I experimented with the virtual input.. but maybe not in the right sequence of things…
It’s all working including the Mackie control of the transport in S1.
Thanks again.
Clay
Cool man 🙂
Just as a side note… i had to set the CC#s on my pads all the way down to start at C-2 and then work my way back up to D#-1
I take it back… not sure why I’m messing up.. but I had set the root note in the group on maschine down to C-2 while troubleshooting… setting it back to where it should be C-1… (with the pads down at C-2 and up and it was all triggering the Record Arm and Solo buttons for the track)
Yeah I would put it at c1 or higher
Hi SJ,
Did not catch all the transport control cc numbers. You kind of skipped this in the vid. Can you please list the numbers you used.
They are in the template, or you can also find them in the original MCU template in controller editor
stop – 93
play – 94
record – 95
loop – 86 or 89
rewind – 91
fwd – 92
Yeah I figured them out in the end. One thing I noticed though is that if you press any of the transport control buttons whilst recording it inputs midi data in the selected track. Are you finding this?
Yeah I did notice this on a few of them, will have to investigate it further 🙂
Cool. Thanks
One more thing SJ, I am pretty sure we were able to somehow use maschine in maschine mode with 1.8. I remember being able to do drum rolls in etc in studio one. Has this been removed?
Will not work the same way, it sucks, but I will do a video showing how. They changed the “sounds to midi notes” so it’s a totally different setup and not very fun, I’ve been holding out in hopes that they quickly change it with an update LOL
Hi Saint Joe!
Have you been able to make it work inside Cubase? It does not work for me and other users.
There is a midi loop resulting.
I’ve start a thread here if you are curious:
http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?210350-Maschine-2-0-as-a-Vst-intrument-in-Cubase-causes-midi-feedback-loop
I’m pretty sure it’s due to the things that have changed but I will give it a try, they changed a lot with the midi in a daw unfortunately.
Hey SJ…. for some reason this isn’t working nearly as easily as 1.8…. I’m using Reaper, and I just got Studio. When I am on Channel 1, I hear my kit on group a, but behind it, it’s the chromatic bass drum sound playing really low, whenever I hit my pads or MIDI keyboard. Can’t figure it out.
In the first 50 seconds of your video, you show how easily this is done… but it’s just not working over here.
Can you help? Can you guys do a Reaper routing video? Please let me know, thanks!
Nevermind, got it… some of my sounds in the kit (Pressed Kit) had midi input “active” in the Sound option… I didn’t want that, just the group.
This new setup is kind of a drag….
Yeah, gotta be careful with that for sure, I hope they improve it a bit in some areas for sure.
Hey SJ, Great Vid.. Using Ableton, how can I make the “Play” button Play and Stop instead of using “Erase” to stop? Or how can I Erase without stopping?
Also i want to map the 2 “nudge” buttons in Ableton to 2 buttons on the Maschine, how can i do this?
Cheers,
Scott
You may be able to turn it into a toggle button and map it directly in Maschine, I don’t think you can have it be both if using mackie control. As for the nudge buttons you can just use Ableton’s mapping option to map it to whatever buttons you want to use.
Cheers, also as the “Erase” button is “Stop” how do I Erase something I have just recorded in i.e. if I’m playing live and drop in some hats but want to delete them is there another way?
You can still use undo or select the notes and delete them
Hi SJ,
Any joy finding out why the transport buttons are sending midi to the tracks when recording?
Must be something new, I found the issue to be there somewhat in Cubase also but not as much, seems like a bug to me.
Is it me or was this much easier in 1.8? Is there no sound midi batch setup/sound to midi notes option? I cant seem to get this to work and have watched your video for hours to see if I’ve missed something. I get NO sound in Midi control mode. Is there a mk1 template that you can upload?
Definitely used to be easier. Make sure you so the proper notes. I will be making an mk1 template I’ve just be under the weather a bit recently.
Hi SJ, I will give the template another go but just in case a MK1 template would be great.
Uploaded an MK1 template, let me know if you need anything else fam!
Thanks SJ, all working perfect.
Cool fam, glad to help
Thanks for this! Could you please do a vid setting this up in Logic Pro, finding it tricky getting Maschine Studio set up as a good midi controller, also will sequencing midi in the host DAW work in Maschine mode as well? Cheers
Check this out
https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-0-midi-sequencing-in-logic-pro-x-with-maschine-studio/
It’s done using midi mode
I love the way Maschine controls Komplete as well as other vsts. I use Sonar X3. Can I set up Maschine and have the same amount of control inside of Sonar. In essence I would like Maschine to respond, inside of Sonar, as it does in Standalone mode.
Thanks for your time
When inside of Sonar, the only thing you would lose is control of the transport section, everything else you can still use as normal.
Good work thank you !!!
Glad to help!
Will you make and update version, they currently have the maschine control device name..
I’m not sure what you mean? I made a template for each controller.
There is a preset for the maschine studio inside of studio one 2.6 now
Yeah that’s if you want to use Maschine Studio as a full midi controller for Studio One, this one is a basic setup for triggering the Maschine plugin from the controller.
When you say this one is a basic setup for triggering the maschine plugin from the controller, are you saying you can control the studio one plugins or are you talking about the native instrument plugins… Also I did something in the past trying to mimic this, and now my studio one no longer recognize the maschine studio unit, I believe is says not install? I want to have the ability to record straight into studio one from maschine and I want to have the ability to dump the 2bar loop inside of studio one so I could arrange my… Read more »
This is just a basic midi setup to trigger the Maschine plugin pads from the controller, it doesn’t do anything for controlling S1 or other plugins. If you want to record directly into S1 you have to do a workaround to do it in realtime. If you want to drag your loops from Maschine then no setup is needed, just press record in Maschine and record your loops then you can drag them into S1. The workaround for doing it directly without having to drag would look like this https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-0-recording-midi-into-studio-one-2-in-real-time/ But you could use midi batch setup instead of doing… Read more »
Thanks Joe for all your services… I don’t have intentions of being a bugaboo, I really want to gain a great prospective of how to operate this unit… I believe I can explain my issue better with video though..
No need to apologize man, please keep asking questions until you are thoroughly clear on what you want to undestand, that’s what we’re here for man 🙂
I believe I have it targeted now… At 1:11 you say it doesn’t have the mashine studio controller inside of the native instruments file folder yet, but in 2014 they do have it installed now. Can you explain what’s the difference is and is it possible to make a video they way I can get a precise view and understanding….
Their template is made up for controlling Studio One and it’s features, this one is just a basic template for triggering the Maschine plugin when in Studio One.
What I believe your saying is, by default maschines studio term get switch to plugin when slave by studio one 1/2…. I will let you know what I did, I loaded up s1/2 and then I followed these procedures, however I did add the preset maschine studio from the natives instruments folder and that was the only difference… When I got to the controller editor part when I hit the pads no sound came out, and that’s when I was bomb, also the color scheme didn’t work either unless you adjusted the color scheme. I believe the aspect of the… Read more »
Hey brother. Great Tutorials as always. I am having a little trouble. I know I saw you show how to route groups to audio tracks in Studio One with the 2.0 software and I can’t seem to find that. My problem is I am only showing 6 outputs for Maschine under my Instrument Banks in Studio One 2 . I can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing wrong or how to activate the rest of my outputs. I’m not really wanting to do it with midi so much i want to record all my tracks, basically save a performance.
The routing in S1 is the same as Maschine 1, not sure why you would only see 6 outputs though, you should see all of them when you expand Maschine
https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-tracking-out-live-audio-into-studio-one-2-5/
I feel like such an idiot. I found where i needed to scroll down and check the rest of the outputs inside the Banks in Studio One. Thanks anyway fam.
No doubt fam 🙂
Is there any way you could show setting this up with the Maschine Control preset inside Studio One. I’m not really sure what I’m missing.
Which part are you having trouble with? Which Maschine control preset are you referring to?
Now that I notice it’s for Maschine and not the MK2 which I am using. I found a preset online and downloaded it. It has controls for most everything in Studio One but I cannot seem to get it to actually work. I just removed all of my control surfaces to start fresh and added them back in following the video and your template still works but this new one I guess isn’t set up to work as Mackie… Not sure
Yeah, the one in S1 was made for the original Maschine, haven’t tried the MK2 one, but it’s not a Mackie device I don’t think, there should be instructions with whatever template you’re using though.
Some guy uploaded it to a few different forums but didn’t leave any instructions for setting it up. I think it would be nice to be able to use the mixer on S1 by turning the knobs on Maschine
