With the machine 1.6 update and ability to load vst/au plugins there are a lot of questions on accessing plugin presets. Some of them show all presets, and some show disabled or empty in the list, instead of preset names.
This tutorial shows you how to use the program lists inside many plugins to access the presets properly. This all has to do with how the plugin “shares” it’s presets with the host.

Do you have to do this once or every time you load the plugin?
you can save the program list or load up the program list and how you want it, then save a module preset as the default for that plugin, so it opens with this program list every time you load the plugin, easiest way would be to get it how you want it, then save that as the default or as a program list. You could even do multiple program lists and save each one as a different module preset, sorta like saving different banks.
is there a way to browse the presets from the hardware
yeah, you have to save them first, watch this one
https://maschinetutorials.com/how-to-save-plugin-presets-into-the-maschine-library
where can i get some of the vst you have in your videos?
you can buy them from the different websites, depends on which one’s in particular you mean, all the NI stuff you can get on their website, etc.
So how does Kontakt 4 presets work?
that’s totally different as kontakt isn’t a single instrument with presets, it loads them based on different libraries. The best way is to save the presets you want to use as modules for quick browsing.
so for for me to view that sound/preset i have to save it as a module to browse within maschine?
Yes, basically saving it as a module saves it into the database under modules. You could also save it as a sound so it shows up under instruments.
How do i do that?
when you have a sound you want to save, click the arrow on the module area and where it says “save as” click that and name the preset whatever you want. It will show up in the maschine database under modules, it will be tied to whatever instrument it belongs to. So if you save something from Kontakt, it will show up under the kontakt bank in the modules list.

Thanks Fam Im Leaning An Whole Lot About The Maschine From You…………………..
awesome man, I love to hear that!!
Hi Joe, I have a question about West Africa as a plugin in Maschine. When I have loaded Kontakt respectively West Africa I can play/hear the pattern, but the midi notes are not represented in Maschine´s software and they can´t get saved (I would like to use the West African pattern in Ableton Live). This is very strange because when I manually play the percussions with pads, the midi notes are represented in machine’s pattern editor. Do you have a solution to the problem?
Thank you ever and best regards from Germany
Thomas Walber
You have to play the sounds for maschine to capture midi, it will only capture the sounds that way. Hit the pad that triggers the pattern
Unfortunately I did not understand. Shall I let the pattern play, switch to pad mode and then press each barani pad when it is lighted up?
That is very complicated and imprecise. Is there possibly a way to record the midi notes of Kontakt in Ableton Live as a midi clip (so far I can record the pattern from Kontakt as an audio clip in Ableton Live)?
Thanx and best wishes
Thomas Walber
Maschine will not automatically send midi into your daw unless you tell it to, you have to set it up to do so. You can change the pattern drag mode from audio to midi to drag the midi out.

Hi SJ, many thanks for your very quick response. It makes me sick that I can´t make it. My problem is this: If I load a drum pattern, which is integrated in Maschine (for example the “808 Kit”), then the midi notes of each drum (in my example the midi notes for the 808 1 Kick, Snare 808 1, 808 ClosedHH etc) are displayed in the pattern editor of the Maschine´s software. So it is no problem to transfer the pattern / their midi notes to Ableton Live. But: if I open Kontakt (as a plugin in Maschine) and load… Read more »
Yes, this is correct, the midi patterns are triggered inside the interface, by a single note, so you would just input the note that triggers the pattern, you will not see the full midi pattern inside of maschine because it is a built in pattern, like if you were triggering an audio loop
I think I’m close to it. Please stay patient with me for a while. Maybe it helps if I tell you what I see on my screen? I did all the settings just the way you have shown in the two tutorials you mentioned above and everything works well with my own drum patterns and instruments. So, if I transfer one of Maschine´s built-in patterns (for example the Kit 808) to Ableton Live, the name of the kit (in this case “Kit 808”) is displayed in the blue fold above the sound-slots (at the top of the pattern editor). Beside… Read more »
That’s the difference between an instrument and a kit. Kontakt does not load as a kit it loads as an instrument. Right click on that soundslot and go into sound MIDI settings. Turn it on for that sound and give it a channel. Then, click the arrow next to group c, go to pattern drag mode, and make sure its on MIDI.
Hi SJ, thanks again for your reply. Unfortunately, it still does not work. The cross beside “Group C” is still gray. There is no possibility to grab the “cross” and drag and drop the pattern although I have it setup the way you’ve got me (for built in Maschine pattern it works). Is it possible, that a setting in Kontakt / West Arfica went wrong?

PS: If I switch the pattern drag mode from MIDI to audio, I can drag and drop to Ableton Live. Cracy, isn´t it?
Is there actually any notes in maschine triggering West Africa?
I will have a look and see what I can find out for you
Thanx again for your support.
No, I can´t see any notes in the Maschine triggering West Africa.
Ahhh, that’s the problem. You have to actually record the note that triggers the pattern into maschine first before you can drag it over.
Jep, I think, that´s the point, but Maschine does not record the notes.
That´s what I did: In the options of West Africa I went to the Engine tab and to “Send MIDI to outside world”. There I enable “Script generated CCs” and “Script generated notes” (behind these options is some kind of a point) and disabled the Incoming-options.
Obviously I forgot something to do. Do you have an idea?
Thanx again for your very patient support.
Greetz, Tom
you would have to actually send the midi into maschine to record it, that’s the issue. It would probably be easier to load it directly in ableton instead of maschine for that purpose
Hey Saintjoe i did all the steps but when i drag the preset into the list is nothing happen doesn’t wanna drag it, is something wrong with some of my plug ins presets?
you have to make sure to turn that program list to “on”
it’s on but still not working… can’t figure it out how… anyway thanks!
What is happening is when i drag the preset into the Program list the preset does not stay in the program list…. when you do i can see like an icon but not on mine.
Yeah that’s all you have to do is turn it on and they should work, only thing I can think of is maybe check the permissions on your vst folder to make sure that’s not blocking you, like make sure you have full access to that folder. In order to use it you have to click programs as well as the little power button beside it.
Hey Saintjoe,
The video link seems to be missing here also. Unless it’s a problem with my browser?
Thanks for the heads up, should be working now, thanks! I think some got messed up during the recent design changes 🙂
