Hey what’s up MT Fam! I’m back with a follow up to the tutorial I put out on how to install the ableton live 9 maschine template with the exclusive tutorial I promised to show you how the template actually works
In this tutorial I give you an overview of the features of the Maschine controller template as it relates to the MK2
This is a really deep template that gives you pretty advanced control over Ableton Live 8 or 9
In this video I’m using it inside of Ableton 9

Sj what skin is that you rockin’ in Live and where can I get it ?
It was called Blue09 or something I downloaded from the ableotn forum a while back
In case still looking for that skin… was by user Blarue09 on the Ableton forum:
https://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=181783&hilit=Live+9+Skin
Download link:

Gonna try it with Live9.1 when I get a chance.
Yep that was it, thanks!
Hey SJ
Great vid! Any chance of doing another tutorial for the classic Maschine please?
Cheers Bru!
Glad to help, will work on one for ya!
I have got the 1st maschine and I have done everything like in your 1st video but I can not get it to work right. When I go to pad mode page and I hit a pad it launchs a clip. It will not record the pads I hit no sound at all. So its like part of the templete works and part does not.
are you using the original maschine with live 9 and the new template?
Yep maschine 1 with the new ableton 9 template installed. When I go to the screen that has pad performane and I hit a pad it just starts a clip no sound. I downloaded the newest maschine drive and installed it to make sure it was not that. not sure what is going on.
I will check it out with the original and see what’s up
Yeah SJ! There is a difference with the MK1.
When I have my hooked up I have a yellow line around my clips yet everybody else has a red even when folks are using the APC40. My turns to green I see everybody else’s as red. I’m guessing I’m doing something wrong?
The color has to do with wear its at in lives list of your midi devices. 1st is red so if you move it to the 1st spot it will turn red. I had mine in the 3rd or 4th spot and it was green and I moved it to the 1st spot and its red now.
The red rectangle can change depending on how many controllers you have hooked up, it’s just a way to differentiate between controllers.
OK cool! Thanks for the info…. As I have 2 controllers setup
Also when I turn a knob it does not show up at the bottom of the screen like in your video.
I am lost I uninstalled control editor reinstalled it. uninstalled the Maschine drives and reinstalled. Downloaded the live 9 template and put the parts back into the folds they need to go in to and I still the same issue. When in pad mode all I do is launch clips. If I go to live 8 it works just fine.
make sure you actually press the pad mode button, not just go to the pad mode screen, I just tried it and it works fine as long as you put it in pad mode by pressing the pad mode button.
Thanks for the info I will try it when I get home. The crazy thing is I don’t have to do that with live8.
Well now I feel like a dumb @$$ thanks again Saintjoe that took care of the problem.
Glad to help fam!
any major diferences between this and the original maschine?
Nah they are pretty much the same besides the big knob on the MK2 and the 3 knobs on the Mk1
Can you control Ableton’s tempo from Maschine with the tempo knob? I have Maschine v1 and want to be able to smoothly dial tempo up and down but it doesn’t seem to work?
thanks!
I think that’s one of the differences between the M1 and MK2, on the MK2 you can control the tempo with the tempo button and data wheel. I will explore it some more before I post a video for M1 to see if we can do tempo but I don’t remember it working.
That would be nice if you can do the tempo with M1.
Hey SJ
Still no joy with using Machine in pad mode on MK1 in Live 9…. Not sure what I’m doing wrong!
Don’t know what else to say fam, I tried it and it worked fine for me on the MK1 in Live 9, all I had to do was choose the Live 9 template for the MK1 and it works fine. Making sure to setup the MK1 as a control surface in Live 9, make sure it’s turned on as a remote as well for the midi input/output ports you’re using.
Never mind I’ll use my apc 40…… But I do like to use Maschine for laying down chords….
Really not sure why it’s not working sis (sorry called you bro, thought it was Mike J responding lol) I did exactly what I showed in the video. Only thing I can think of is that the old template is still installed somewhere somehow and it’s using that info instead of the new one.
Hey SJ
Problem resolved…… Yippy! In preferences you need to have MAschine controller set to ON… Also!
Yes đŸ™‚
Great video with nice tips. I love this template!
No problem bro, it’s definitely a great template!
Saint joe, is there a way to operate ableton’s transport controls without being in midi mode?
Yes, do it this way https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-1-8-setup-host-transport-control-in-ableton-live/
I don’t understand what the ‘Refresh’ button is doing. Doesn’t seem to be doing anything much on my MKI.
I assumed it was like a “resync” button to get everything in sync between the controls and current settings in Live.
Hmmm…. I can’t see what it does.
Since the LED screens on Maschine dont show exact parameters from Live, I don’t know what it is supposed to be refreshing?
I just want to know before I change this MIDI control on my custom template – I don’t want to change something only to find out that it was really important later!
Yeah, I never really noticed much with it either, I just assumed it refreshed the link between the controller and the software in terms of any settings that may have been off đŸ™‚
Hi Saintjoe
finally got the ableton live 9 template to work with my Maschine Studio can you make a tutorial showing how to use it as the mapping differs from the MK2
thanks
DPG
Hi also I’m not sure if you covered this but in the 1.6.2 editor the ableton template files are in the controller editor folder template support folder.
Yeah the layout for the Studio is definitely different
also NI left out the instructions for the Studio in the ableton live template manual, still i’m fudging it from the MK2 demos, can you help?
I’ll see if I can find anything concrete
I suppose this is the price of living on the bleeding edge of technology
Indeed đŸ™‚
mucho thanks, will check back.
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here.. I’ve installed the template properly, selected it in preferences and turned all the correct sections on, selected maschine virtual input and output and finally selected ableton 9 control on Maschine.
My pads trigger midi notes but none of the mappings trigger anything in LIVE..
I’m running a MK2 on Ableton 9 MAC.
What version of maschine are you on? Did you select machine as the control surface in live? Did you install the remote user scripts in the pepper live location?
Hey joe, the play button wont play machine when it is in machiene mode….. any ideas? record button lights….
Play is controlled by the host when using it as a plugin.
Since Ableton 9.1.6 it doesn’t work and I cant find the ableton 9.1 maschine templete anywhere
The latest template would be in the service center or in your account on the NI site, I’m not sure if they’ve actually made an updated one or not.
