Integrating Maschine as a plugin inside of Ableton Live has always been a popular combination. Unfortunately the MIDI configuration inside of Maschine has changed quite a bit through various updates.
Even though the process is pretty much the same as far a integration, some of the settings may look a little different. As this is a popular question I get asked often I figured I would do an updated version of using Maschine as a sound modular with the current settings in terms of MIDI configuration for use inside of Live 10

Set it up with EXT INSTS as you explained . Works great. But is there a way to use the maschine controller (MK2) to trigger the sounds instead of the keyboard?
I thought had this working with a previous incarnation of your templates, but can’t get that to work again.
Yeah, put it in midi mode and it will work like a generic keyboard. Make sure it is setup as an input in preferences. The group buttons change the notes the pads will trigger.
COOL!! I didn’t know I had to explicitly set it up as an input in prefs!. But after I did, and also put it in midi mod it worked!! Hurray!! Thanks saintjo!!
No problem, glad to help!
Hey SJ, thx for the heads up! Learning both Ableton and Maschine in tandem can be a little bit daunting… still, great info you have here.
Question, I have managed to replicate EVERYTHING, including adding more kits to the equation as well as sounds…still, when I try to record into midi nothing happens… I can create the pattern in Maschine and drag it into ableton and that works like a charm… any ideas?
Thx a lot.
J
If you’re trying to record MIDI from Maschine into Live check this out https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-7-recording-midi-kits-ableton-live-10/
joe, i have a question/issue using maschine as an external instrument as shown above. when I do this, it all works just fine but in the maschine slot (first slot for the plugin) the ableton metronome is always recorded into the track – i see it triggering midi in the slot. this happens no matter if i have the metronome on or off. i notice in your video that the metronome does not appear to be triggering midi in the first slot and it looks like you have ableton set up in the metronome “active only while recording” option. i… Read more »
Hmmm, what metronome is being recorded? Do you have the metronome/play enabled in Maschine? Maybe that’s what is being recorded. The Metronome in Live doesn’t send MIDI so it shouldn’t be triggering anything at all.
I’ll check that but I didn’t think so. If it’s that simple I’ll be happy, though a bit embarrassed 🙂
No need to be embarrassed. Let me know, I’m interested to see what it could be!
That was exactly what was going on. For some reason, the metronome on-screen button was on/highlighted in Maschine but was not showing lit on the MK3 controller so I simply didn’t notice that it was always on in Maschine. Problem solved. Thanks.
Glad you got it working!
In this tutorial https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-7-recording-midi-kits-ableton-live-10/ you set the root note to C3 and it works fine. However here you keep C1 and it seems to work just as good. What is the difference here?
NI changed this process a few times over the years. But, because you are setting the input note for the whole group, you can change it to respond to the notes you want it to respond to. So basically you’re telling the group which note to start on. It can be C1, C2, C3, B1, etc.
