Yo what’s good MT Fam? This tutorial is focused on step sequencing with the original Maschine controller
It differs from the Mikro in a few ways in terms of the controls and some of the wording you get, same basic concept though
You can definitely get a bit more control over your groove and specific parts of your groove when using the step sequencer.
It’s also a great way to edit your tracks after you’ve laid them down in real time.
This is just a quick “housey” track 🙂

OHHHHHHH SNAP !!! Joe you got House Chops fam. That joint remind me of some Detroit Style House. Great Tut .
Hahaaaaaaaaaaa….I like house music man 🙂
thumbs up homie.
No doubt fam, the step sequencer is actually implemented pretty well.
Damn Doc!! SJ, that was nice. I knew about the step sequencer but I didn’t know you edit like that. Nice tutorial. I might have to jack this one.
Yeah son, it’s great for editing really. Glad you dig it 🙂
Jack away brotha lol.
Yo these vids are getting serious SJ!!! That’s what I’m talking about dude. Yeah, that step sequencer is a monster, but Maschine in whole is CRAZY!!!
This is serious food for thought…I LOVED IT, and that beat was a problem !!!!
Just trying to show some different stuff man 🙂
Try it out brotha, the way you killing it on the controller I’m sure you can do some damage with this lol
I actually use the step sequencer quite often, to start my tracks at least. Usually use it to break out of ruts, like you said it helps come up with stuff that I normally wouldn’t think of. Haven’t done the editing like that tho…good stuff.
Yeah brotha, I can tell….as intricate as your stuff is, I knew the step sequencer had to be involved in some parts lol. But yeah, it’s great for editing too!
I like that house beat you got going on that organ/synth part it does remind me of classic house from when I was younger :).
I am from Chicago and House is in my blood.
Thanks man…yeah when I think House I think old school smooth stuff, not really hardcore house, I like the mellow vibes brotha! 🙂
Never bothered with it,maybe I should rock it and see what I get.
Try it man 🙂
how does that equate to editing instrument parts say I played a chord could I use the stepsequencer to nudge individual notes in the chord if so my mouse is about to become very lonely LoL
Well in that case it will move the whole chord since all the notes fall on the same step so in that instance it’s better to just select the note you want and then use the regular shift+nudge feature
Well cant put that mouse away just yet huh. dats cool since Ive been on this site I use it less and less anyway so minimum use aint bad.
Yeah some stuff is faster with the mouse. I mean you could select the specific note from the hardware, then nudge it. But it’s faster to either grab and nudge with the mouse, or select it with the mouse then nudge from the controller 🙂
That’s kinda dope. I would say I’m gonna try this, but I probably won’t lol. It is tight though. lol
Ahahahahahaha lol
This is great. You can use this to get that human feel if your beat is missing it. Love it. Thanks man.
Yes indeed, definitely a useful setup 🙂
I’ve used the step sequencer occasionally to break out of ruts, but I had NO IDEA you could do that kind of editing inside of it.
That’s a game hanger– especially the individual note swing/nudge. Definitely gonna start using it on beats whether I play ’em in by hand or not. Killer vid, Joe!
Yes, sometimes we forget step sequencer really = step editor. So even if you don’t make your beats in step mode, you can tweak em and really customize the feel. glad you dig it!
how do i auto write fx to the master or whole scene?
You can’t you have to do it at the group level. You could route the master output of all your groups to a separate pad/group for processing.
so how do i go about this?
here’s one way

Thanks just wanted to thank you for the site. Really good job.
Cool man, glad to help. Please let me know if you need it explained any further or differently. You can automate using the controller or directly inside of the software with the mouse.
Really nice tute Joe – I’ve messed with the Step mode ona few occasions, and you are right – its great to switch up your workflow to get some different results. ….BUT… I always thought it would be nice to be able to get some variable velocities and human elements in there – I didn’t realise that you could change velocity and individual hit placement from step mode (and pitch). Killer! I still think some of this stuff (velocity and placement editing) can be done faster with the mouse – but I’ll try to stick to using the hardware –… Read more »
No doubt man, it’s all about how you like to work, remember, not everyone wants to use the mouse. I personally don’t mind, but it’s cool to have options.
can I edit the velocity or pitch with pad/knobs as you do on this vid, outside the step mode ?
not of individual steps, that’s what step editing is for. You can change the pitch of a pad itself by holding it and turning the tempo knob.
Fiya, Great info Saintjoe!
glad you dig it fam
Was this recorded onto vinyl? 😛
Lol Naw haha
Yeah this is solid stuff! Thanks SJ.
Glad to help fam!
I know this an old video, but how the hell to do I change sounds in 2.0 on a MK II? I really hope I don’t have to switch out of step mode when they already made it this easy in 1.8
You can use select to switch between the sounds quickly, it will let you pick which pad/sound you want to work with.
Awesome!! Thank you good sir!!
No problem at all!
really nice tutorial …keep the good work sj
Glad to help, thanks for watching
Man I had not watched this in years. I love this video. Later today I am going to break out with some step sequencing on this beautiful Sunday. Man SJ this track is fitting my vibe right now….so nice .
Doug Lazy in the “house” lol
Hey SJ
Stupid questions here: how do I load a drumkit in 2.1? I just drag it to a group in 1.8 – that doesn’t work in 2.1
How can I use my drumcomputer? I have a MFB Tanzbär and want to put every sound under a pad, just like a kit.
It’s probably something easy but I’m working nightshifts and not geting ‘nough sleep 🙂
Same way, double click it or drag it to a group and it should load. As for your Tansbar, not sure how it’s setup, you would have to send midi out to it from the pads, most likely use “sounds to midi notes” so each pad sends a different midi note, however, I don’t know what midi notes your device responds to so that may take some tweaking by changing the notes your pads are sending out using the transpose knob on the midi out settings of each pad.
The tanzbar has a midi learn.
I’m still importing loads om 1.8 stuff, It’s total chaos. At last, I got kits in 2.1 – Now all the rest.
Isn’t there a automatic import “all” for 2.1? Such a drag kinda work.
Thx SJ
You only need to import your own kits, not the factory stuff from 1.8
SJ, I lost 2 hrs – still can’t get this right.
I got the sounds under my pads.In control – pad mode, I hear 16 different perc sounds – that is ok.
But when i want to step write I only ‘write’ the first sound, no matter what I push.
How do I tell maschine that ‘sound 2’ is a transpose +1 – sound 3 is transpose +2 etc? I can’t seem to store that.
If you want to use the step sequencer to setup different notes, you have to transpose each step to the note you wish to use, you can’t hit a pad in keyboard mode and have it translate.
If you’re trying to trigger your external device, I wouldn’t use keyboard mode, I’d just leave it in regular group mode and use “sounds to midi notes” so each pad sends a different note.
BTW I’m on a maschine MKI with 2.1
Ah last video i found , you said it was not used in 2.0 anymore and now i see that was a update in 2.1
Will try that asap.
Btw that kit that didn t work? Must ve been a kit with one sound or something. I clicked it, maschine shows a windows to closes too fast to read it and i had only the first drum of the kit. Later, I got my old kits into 2.1 and those worked fine.
I got maschine out of sight for some time and I’ m still rusty I guess. Thx Sj
Yeah they brought it back due to the complaining 🙂
Glad to help as always bro.
Ahhh yeah!
thanks man! this had me buggered!
