What’s good MT Family! So this tutorial is about time signatures in Maschine.
Most of the time in urban, dance, pop, and electronic music, we use 4/4
But there are some other time signatures that you may want to explore to give your music a natural shuffle or groove.
Anyone that has played in the band or any sort of instrument probably already has a firm grasp on this.
But if not, I try to break it down in a way that relates to music production, and give some examples to further show how different time signatures will have different effects on your music.
Hope you find it useful!

always wonder that Sj nice vid very informative…
quick question at around the 5:30 mark and the 6:20 mark in the video (with the hi hat) i seen u started the beat but ur hits kept showin up at the end of the bar instead of the begining in the software, then u did something that magically(lol) moved it around so it statrted at the begining instead of the end. i always have trouble with this, whats the shortcut to do that is what im asking
I had the grid on so I just pressed shift+quantize. I usually do not have this problem as I normally record with the grid off. But NI needs to fix it so that no matter if the grid is on or off, the first not always lands on or after the start of the pattern and not at the end of it lol.
True i always have rerecord cause i like the beat to start at the 1 when i press the play start button….sometmes i select the whole pads pattern and nudge it over with the nudge button , found that trick out the other day and was buggin out how ill maschine is. U can set for bars or 1/2 ect…
No doubt. or you can just drag the single note over to where it needs to be 🙂
Good to know saintjoe.
You can really change the feel of tunes by doing that.
Yes indeed, can come in handy
Hey man thanks for doing that it helped me understand it much better. Much appreciated!!
No problem fam, glad to help 🙂
Hey Joe do you know if we are able to change time signatures from scene to scene? Say I have a breakdown in the track and want 3/4 now for a bit till the verse or chorus comes back in 4/4 time.
nah, time sig is global, would be dope though 🙂
Cartoon music? I don’t know how many musicians are gonna hear this one, but since I did, I gotta speak up… I think a much better example of a 3/4 waltz would be John Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things” … for 6/8 – Miles Davis’ “All Blues” is a good example… the deal is, musicians play these signatures with a lilt and sway that doesn’t show up on paper… and doesn’t show up in maschine either… just like when SJ or any hip-hop beat guru avoids quantizing — you have to know it feel it… for odd metered time signatures the… Read more »
Lol I wasn’t using the cartoon music as an example, just the way they would count the steps in the waltz in those shows lol. I knew it was something many could remember quickly. I said it as a joke, didn’t mean to offend your musicianship 🙂
Great e,ample by the way. And as with anything there is always a slight variation from person to person when using these tools as we all have our own internal groove.
it was explained very thorough and in a form all could understand, I have band experience as well and truth be told your cartoon reference was a pretty well example being that 1: everyone watched cartoons(some still do,LOL); and 2
believe it or not…that’s what inspire most to do music, any genre, any style it doesn’t matter and for some more than others that’s how I learned about some composers such as Mozart, Bach, Beethoven,Kraus,Count Basie,Duke Ellington and many more. Good on you my brother.
Thanks fam, I just try to have fun with it and explain it in a way that everyone will be able to grasp.
Finally someone to put things in layman terms so we all can understand, thank you brother
Glad to help man!!
Hey Joe, is there a way to have a bpm automation with 2.0? Start a song at 105 and finish it at 115bpm?
No way to automate tempo changes yet unfortunately.
