This may be a little more esoteric for many folks, in this tutorial I show what the different pattern lengths do, how to understand them, and where you may want to use them.
I know most folks work in 1 bar pattern lenghts (the unit of the pattern) and just make patterns that vary from 1-8 or more bars.
But you can have the unit of your pattern be anything from 1 bar, to 1/128, to off…

This video is helpful .. even tho. I understand it. But a couple of weeks ago I did not. Had like a 100 patterns on 100 on different groups .. but I found out that 2 groups works just as better..keep it coming saintjoe.
word man, glad you liked it!
At around 7:45 mark you adjusted the top of the grid size by dragging the arrow above the grid to the left. What is that adjustment arrow normally used for?
just adjusting the pattern size (grid as you call it) it’s just the way to do it manually in the software if you don’t want to do it by setting the number you can drag it.
That’s just what I was looking for…thanks for explaining that one Bro!
dope man! just trying to go into all the nooks and crannies man, mixing it up a bit 🙂
I think 1.6 improved on this but still needs a little work on ease of work flow. Let’s say in the MP in song mode, you can set an intro like Boom, Boom, Boom then the song can start…. but with Maschine it’s harder because it plays your longest pattern length, so with the scenes it’s hard to get a quick repeating intro to lead into your song. Kinda like using the repeat button type intro….. If that makes sense? You know what I mean Joe you’re from the MP world. Good vid!
if you want it to be smaller just program it that way, use smaller patterns and don’t put longer one’s in the intro scene
that’s exactly where these different pattern lengths come in, you can most definitely use them to create a quick little intro to play before the song 🙂
Gotcha, after playing around with it. I made it make sense. I just have to remember that the longest pattern length controls the scene. So after you create your intro then you have to set your pattern length to as long as you want it repeat. Thanks SJ!
no doubt!
I may have to see.this video again a few times, lol. I think a couple of examples of the concept in action would help video. K fam, peace.
I guess it’s really useful if you want to make small or odd sized patterns lol. If you usually do 4-8 bar patterns it may not be needed. Also, can be useful to create fills or intros, etc.
Great tutorial!
Cool, glad you liked it!
Yo say if i create a pattern for 4 bars and i want the 3rd n the 4th bar to replace the 1st n 2nd. Wus the quickest and easy way to do that bigdogg!?
yeahhh….uhhhh, you would probably have to do some manual cut and past stuff lol, no quick way to do that I’m afraid
Hi Joe, I’m having a little trouble programming beats in the pattern area/ manipulating the length, beat division. I’m new with drum machines in general. I tried to start with 1 bar to keep things simple, but for some reason, I’m not programming it on time or my length is not long enough for an 8 bar loop. It always starts over before I’ve finished, or my first step (kick) ends up out of time. Is there a way to adjust the metronome to play a 2 or 4 count before Maschine records? Also, the only way I’ve been able… Read more »
For 8 bars. Leave pattern length to 1bar, then actually set your pattern itself to 8. The grid can be whatever you want, this is where you notes will land.
To get a count in, press shift+record and it will give 4 counts before recording.
Thanks Joe!
You know it!
Joe, would you say its easier to make sure that your 8 bar loop loops properly by setting it via hardware versus changing the length in the software? I’ve been doing changes via software; I have mine set like you said, but when I’m playing a scene, I wanted to shorten the 8 bar length at the end so it will loop on time, but it will do a repeat of the first phrase before playing again. How can I stop this? Thanks
It doesn’t matter if you set it from software or hardware it will be the same. The important part is to make sure your data fits properly in the loop, you don’t want to change the loop length to fit your data, if it’s off, you need to change the data so it properly loops within the 8 bars. So if it’s a little bit shorter than 8 bars, you need to replay it so that it loops properly within the 8 bars. Now if it’s 4 bars instead of 8, that’s fine, but if it’s like 7.6 bars, then… Read more »
Thank you Joe! I realized it was my playing and I had to slow down a bit -the metronome helped 🙂
No problem!
Cool. Didn’t know about this. Will try it out tomorrow.
no doubt man, glad to help bro
video is down????
Try it now, thanks
