Yo this is a quick tutorial showing how to use the pattern duplication and doubling options.
I got some questions as to how I was making new patterns quickly when doing my workflow videos so wanted to show it.
This is also how I go about making my different sections for a track from verse to chorus, etc.
Starting with a 2 or 4 bar pattern I’m able to quickly turn them into 8 and 16 bars using the double function.
Likewise, if I’m working on a loop and I want to add something to it, I can use duplicate to make a new pattern so that I have both versions of the loop.
It’s quick and something I don’t even think about anymore as it’s just a normal part of the process, but I realize not everyone uses or is familiar with it.
This is also how you duplicate a specific pattern if you don’t want to duplicate a whole scene, which includes every group in the scene.
It’s all about options fam!

Nice !
Good one, You can’t even do that with the mouse!
Indeed fellas, little functions like this make the workflow easier. These should def be in the software man, I’ve asked for it multiple times.
Is there anyway to go back to 8 bars if you accidentally hit ‘double pattern’ more times then you wanted and don’t want 16 or 32? Other than the undo button. I accidentally made a pattern 16 bars and didn’t realize it and saved it. And since I can’t just hit undo because I’ve opened and closed machine a couple times since then I was wondering if there was an easy way to cut patterns in half.
just manually change it from 16 to 8 bars 🙂
Nice!!! Thanks Joe. You and knock make learnin the maschine a lot easier for us peeps that hate reading directions, lol
word fam, I know how it is, many love to see it then do it instead of read it, so we here for ya!
I’m the type that just digs in myself so I know how it is lol.
We need more vids like this SJ. I mean more workflow short cuts, etc. I use this all the time and your right it’s def workflow must have. Good vid, peace.
Yeah fam, just trying to share all the lil stuff that can make workflow better, sometimes it’s not always about being advanced and next level, at times it’s just the lil stuff that changes your entire game lol…thanks for the comment!
That’s what I’m talking about…. the lil stuff IS the big lol.
yeah fam!! it is lol
thx sj this was a huge lift
No doubt fam, glad to help!!
Nice on SJ Needed this def makes thing easier with more control fam…
That’s whasup fam! Glad you can use it.
Nice one fam!
Another really useful function you did not mention in the video is the “Split” function.
This come in really handy if you wanna change some stuff in your pattern, e.g. turning a drum beat to a drum break.
You can work on the pattern of the loop and when you’re happy hold shift and hit pad 4 and it will automatically create a new pattern. The original pattern stays the same.
I was just about to post this.
Wow I didn’t know this! I like that feature… it’s a quicker than hitting the duplicate button…. it’s a more faster workflow. Can’t wait to see how the Compare feature works.
Compare and split go together, but again, it’s a flaky system imo and I find it quicker to use duplicate, just because of how the compare and split works currently.
Oh and you also can switch between the original loop and your changes for the break by pressing shift +pad 3 (before you split the pattern).
. Oh okay… pretty dope. I like that feature too
I had a video planned for the split function today actually lol, but I’m not a fan of the way it works. I feel it should work based on the record button, not the play button. Many people leave the play button engaged the whole time they are working on their beat, for those folks, split will not work, because it will always “split” the recorded pattern from the blank pattern, thus it will erase what you had previously. I still will do the video, but that’s why I didn’t lump it in with this, because I feel it’s a… Read more »
Maybe I got you wrong but Split works with the record button for me.
I record a two bar drum beat.
As soon as I stop recording and re-record something new to the pattern, I can split it and the previous drum beat stays exactly the same it was before.
only if you stop the sequencer from playing.
leave the sequencer playing and try it, jump in and out of record without stopping the sequencer. It doesn’t work, we’ve been on them for this for a long time, they’ve acknowledged it but said it is working as designed, meaning that’s how they wanted it to work. However, many of us feel it should be tweaked a bit.
Alright, now I got it. You’re right this sucks, but I never used it that way.
I only use split, e.g. when I have my loops done. So if I start arraging the song and I need a variation of the pattern it becomes handy, cause you can achieve results way faster than duplicating a pattern.
Yeah lol…it wouldn’t change how you use it, but I think the intended way would be if it’s memory was triggered every time you hit the record button. This would let you create multiple patterns quickly, which is the idea behind it. Bang out a loop, take record off, audition some stuff, add more to the loop. Then split should take the pattern with the added stuff and put it in a new pattern, leaving you with the previous one. It’s close to how it is now, but the memory and how it’s triggered just isn’t reliable. Sometimes it works… Read more »
I see where you going with this SJ. What your saying is on some (Super-work flow as inspiration strikes feature) which is sick. I feel ya. When inspiration strikes you have to be ready to strike back lol.
Yes indeed.
I’ve been saying this from my very first encounter with Maschine. Coming from the MPC world, I notice no option to undo the last take of an entire recording. So yeah, that would be a good option for the compare function – I think as well.
We’ve been pushing for it fam, hopefully it happens.
Im interested in the split function…haven’t tried it.
basically it’s designed to let you create separate patterns when you banging out and adding stuff to a loop. So if you have a kick and snare, then you record a hat, but still want the pattern without the hat, you hit split and it creates two patterns for you. Try it!
So you would add the hat on the second split track and would have NO hat on pattern 1 and hat on pattern 2? This is the idea? The idea is to have the same beat going with stuff added later? Kind of like when you duplicate and add stuff the the duplicate pattern. Similar functions sort of?
correct 🙂
Yeah I see. I really like idea you mention with the compare function as a advanced undo.
Why is NI so sturdy? They should add it as an option so you can decide which way you prefer…
Yeah, i think they will change it eventually, it’s just a case of they had one idea, and the users have another way of working or improving upon the idea.
Aha! Than was fantastic. Certainly makes life easier now.
Thanks SJ
Ia there an auto scroll while your pattern is playing. I am sick of have to manually scroll back and forth?
Glad to help man! No autoscroll man I just zoom out so I can see the whole pattern.
I agree, I think an auto scroll feature would help out visually with the workflow.
Thanks SJ
No problem
Still loving this tutorial homie. I use it in my workflow
that’s whasup fam!
This was very helpful I was using that copy and paste method but this way looks way more effective.
No doubt, there’s multiple ways man, just find the one that works best for ya!
Thanks for the help. I had a Mpc 5000 It was the shit but always had to track out and all that. Plus no one was showing how to do things. So thanks.
No doubt fam, we are glad to help yo, I came from the mpc myself so I know what ya mean.
what are you using to sit machine on? great vid. helped a lot.
I have a rolodex laptop stand I got from Sam’s Club (walmart) for 15 bucks lol, works great! Glad you liked the vid!
What are the commands that you used at the 2:58 mark in order ro see the entire 16 bars?
I zoomed out using the nav button and the first knob under the right screen. You can also use the navigate button and hit the pads that light up to see what they do, they do they same function as the knobs which allow you to scroll left/right as well as vertical, and zoom in/out for patterns and scenes.
Sounds like a video I need to do 🙂
had to brush up my knowledge on this stuff man copy and paste had me goin crazy!! Thanks as always SJ!
Yeah fam, copy and paste can drive a brotha insane man lol
The only confusion I have is when I’m making a beat, I always stay on that A1 or whatever pattern. When I saw you switch to A2 so on, I got confused. How do I do that? Why?
Just let me know.
When I duplicated the beat, it goes to the next pattern. If you want to go to the next pattern manually, just click the next one.
Now thats what I’m talking about. keep it rolling.
useful tips I’m humming along now… so many thoughts in
My head, a shaft remix is coming I can feel it.
thanks Saintjoe
That’s whasup fam, glad to help yo!
is there anyway just to duplicate a single pad to a new pattern?
yeah, you can just copy the events for that part, and paste it in the new pattern using copy/paste
https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-quick-tip-copying-patterns-in-the-software-interface/
the quickest method for me, is to put the single pad in keyboard mode, copy, then go to the next pattern and paste on the pad you want to put it on
Hey SJ
Is there a way to see the midi data in the pattern like it can be shown in ableton? Collapsed so I only see the notes that are used instead of a bunch of empty lines?
The ‘fold’ in ableton. Thx!
No there is no way to do that currently
Is there a way to “double” with the mikro? The cutting and pasting is driving me crazy. Thanks for all the great info!
yeah it’s the same process, press the pattern button, then you’ll see “dbl” on f1, press that to double the current pattern
Thanks for all the videos!! I’m much further than I would of been without this amazing site!! I’m not sure if this is painfully obvious but I can’t find it in the manual… So, I have been an mpc user for years but JUST converted so I can make beats and drag them straight into traktor without having to track out from the mpc, jj os had a very nice feature where you could say have one track/pattern to loop from bar 1 to bar 4, then the next track/pattern could be set to loop from bar 3 to bar… Read more »
What’s up fam, glad to help! Currently Maschine doesn’t allow you to set loops within a pattern, it’s something many of us have been asking for, for a long time. But currently you can’t do it, you can only set different pattern lengths.
Ok no problem. Lets hope they implement it one day. Thanks for the fast reply man. Very appreciated!!
Yeah I hope they do!
Awesome! After going through the 101 tutorials I had so many follow up questions/road blocks as pertaining to actually going in and writing beats but the more I go through the second part they are getting answered and the light bulbs are starting to go off. Thanks for this one 🙂
Cool man glad to help! Remember those sections are only a small part of the content here so feel free to ask questions and search the site 🙂
love you saint joe
ahahahaha, cool man! 🙂
My boy Saint Joe you da man 🙂
what’s good fam!
I have a question, i have managed to create and duplicated patterns no problem but how do i do this, i created scene 1, then duplicated and doubled to scene 2, i the want to duplicate pattern 1 to scene 3, no problem but i want to make scene 3 a whole new kit but with the same pattern as i duplicated, when i do this it changes the kit for all patterns, help me out man!
🙂
You would have to copy the pattern to another group and load the kit you want to use in that group, you can only have one kit per group no matter how many scenes, so just load another kit in a different group then you can copy the pattern to that group 🙂
Cheers bro! These vids are the shizzle.
Glad to help fam!
PEACE IM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW CAN I CHANGE THE START POINT OF A PATTERN AND OR A SCENE IN MASCHINE STUDIO
Maschine patterns do not have a start point that you can adjust, you can only change the length it will always start at the beginning of a pattern. If you are trying to work on a specific section then setting a loop point around that section may help.
