Many wanted a tutorial on how to use Reason inside of Maschine, for windows users there’s hope
A while back I came across the Rewire VST, I’m not a Reason user but I told a few friends about it. I tried to get it to work with Ableton Live running that into Maschine but it wasn’t happening, maybe it was an early beta problem or maybe it was me trying to use it through a bit bridge.
anyway, I saw some folks talking about it again on the NI forums and said it worked good with Reason so I figured I’d download the demos of both apps and see what’s up.
This video shows how it runs inside of Maschine, as well as a good workflow for getting multiple Reason sounds into your Maschine projects.
This is a 32 bit plugin but it does work on BOTH Mac and Windows 🙂
you can get it from here: http://www.energy-xt.com/index.php?id=0101
It’s not free, I think it’s like 29 bucks, again, I just downloaded the demo to test.
see how to use it below

According to WEBSITE ITS MAC friendly…Ima check this out tomorrow, need sleeeeeeeepppppp. SaintJoe, you ever SLEEP bruh?
Yeah, my bad man, I thought it was windows only lol.
Ok couldn’t help myself to check it out. It works, why would they limit it to one instance? Kinda limited that way. No way around it huh Joe?
Nah, if we could do multi channel plugs in Maschine we could use the other channels, it has 1 stereo and 6 mono audio channels, and you can use as many midi channels as you wish. But I agree, wish you could open multiple instances of it but I think it’s a firewire limitation.
I was about to sell REASON 5 and use the proceeds for komplete 7 crossgrade…I used to swear by reason 5 and it is dope, but I can’t stand the linear track building….After tasting from the rivers of MASCHINE and quenching beat thirsts that now simmer in the inner most of my soul…LOL, delirious, PEACE!!!!
Ha, yeah, for folks that have invested in Reason this is cool, If I could use multiple instances I wouldn’t mind getting Reason as a sound module, I thought about it when I was using ableton before I got Maschine, this vst makes me think about it again.
Where is the Pro tools vids?
I don’t have/use Pro Tools 😉
The OctoRex could give ya 8 rex loops on one channel in Maschine if ya want to save time and space I think?
Yeah, it would.
OHHHHHh So my Reason 4 will get the dust blown off of it. Man this is a beautiful year !! Thanks SJ !!!! That 29 busks will be well worth it if it test out great on my home system !!
I tested it, it worked aight Knock. So I loaded one of my old beats and said, “Why I oughta sample MYSELF!” I go to sampling mode and finish recording the 4 bar loop and BOOM!!!! Reason crashes and Maschine Crashes as I was assigning my recording to the pad. So I took Reason put it on ebay, got cash in my paypal, and now Im ordering KOMPLETE 7 CROSSGRADE….ADIOS REASON!!!!! (in a matter of less than 24hrs)…LOL> True story.
Ahahahahahahahahaha!!! Crazy! lol
Hey SJ, I just downloaded the Rewire Vst….I got it to work with Ableton Live 8 & Reason 5! Thanks Again! Running On Mac….
word! maybe I need to upgrade to live 8 finally lol, I’ll try it again with live 7, when I first tried it, it was really early in the beta stages lol
Does it work with jbridge?.
yeah, it’s working good with jbridge now 🙂
I haven’t had any luck on the mac. Bought the plug in, placed it in it’s respective folder but maschine doesn’t recognize it. Neither does pro tools
You didn’t try the demo first? I don’t have a mac so I’m not sure, protools won’t read it because it’s not an rtas, and do you have Maschine set to read vsts or au plugins? It needs to be reading vsts for it to show up.
Ok I figured it out. Had it in the wrong vst folder lol. Works great on mac! Thanks Saintjoe, this is truly a breakthrough!!
Word, that’s good news!
Silly question Sj But I just downloaded the demo and cant figure out how to view reasons in a full screen mode on my monitor. any tips for a lost brothah… LOL
Reason don’t go full screen. One of the main reasons I never really got into it lol.
Wow break out the magnifer glass. I already have to wear glasses. All this landscape and cant use it. LOL
again, one of the main reasons I don’t use Reason much lol, I could never get into the small interface even though there are some dope sounds in there!
Thats what got me thinking the things you can do with the sounds right inside of reasons. But the fonts are small like logic. And that’s what I don’t like. Can cause a headache after a while. What ever happen to the perfect world LOL
yeah after this vid, I went out and bought Reason…it is no longer installed on my computer lol, I just couldn’t get into it like I wanted, the interface is just too small and cramped for me!
I feel ya on that one bro. I have to think this one through. Back to beat making time with the Hennessy & me LOL
word lol
Im able to use reason in Maschine on my mac using the virtual output….But when its time for me to drop everthing into protools 9….I cant get the audio from reason to register in protools via maschine, and also the Virtual midi output is offline….Does someone has a solution who uses protools 9….thanks
I suggest recording the sounds from Reason into pads of Maschine and triggering them as samples. Since you only have one rewire input. Virtual midi is offline most likely because you are using it to control Reason.
Hey Sainjoe
For those of you who find the Reason interface to small and cramped you can seperate the mixer, rack and sequencer screens to their own screen. And make sure you hit the TAB key once in rack mode to flip the modules and start wiring. This is why I use reason still, being able to see my sound flow just like in real life is awesome. Thanks for all the tuts guys keep up the great work
yes I agree being able to separate the seqeuncer is cool, it’s the rack that remains small to me. You can’t make it full screen so the devices seem small…I have a 28″ screen, so it def could use more space. But that doesn’t take away from it as a sound device/tool, it’s still dope, many use it. Just like anything else, it’s just a preference.
Thanks for the support fam, glad you digging the site!
Hay Joe. I’m trying to drag and drop my reason audio to make a sample out of it just like the vid. but when i do theres no sample or sound from what I draged and droped. What am I doing worng? drag and drop is set to audio.
gotta make sure the midi is on the same track as the rewire vst where the audio is coming in at
Hi, new to maschine trying to link it to my reason. i downloaded the plugin demo and i cant get either program to pick it up. what step am i missing?
You can’t get the plugin to show up in maschine? Did you point maschine to where the plugin is? In plugin folders you need to add the folder that you have the rewire vst located in. Then you can open it up in maschine and open reason. Also remember the rewire vst is 32 bit so if you’re not using maschine in 32 bit you will not see it, it will show up under the 32 bit tab unavailable for use.

Reason includes rewire & advice on buying the vst seems wrong according to the method shown in this French video.
(You needn’t understand french to understand this demo.)
Yes, all versions of reason include rewire, however, Maschine is not a rewire host, so if you want to use rewire with maschine you need the plugin, or you can load it in a daw. Personally I use MIDI and my audio interface software routing if I ever want to use reason with maschine.
I did a basic MIDI version of this setup a while back. However rewire allows MIDI and audio to be recorded into maschine from reason, that’s why I did this video too
Anyone knows of the limitations of the Rewire VST Demo?! Checked the site and it says project settings aren’t saved, and you would have to reset them everytime you open a project. Which settings are they speaking of exactly?!
Thinking of downloading and installing the demo to feel it out a bit, using Reason as a plugin in Maschine sounds pretty cool.
I think mainly you can say, have a device loaded in Reason, and recall that. Also, you can’t use multiple outputs in the rewire vst, but Maschine can’t read multiple outputs anyway so…
Thanks! You say you use MIDI and your audio interface software routing when you want to use reason with maschine. What software is that? Does this imply a better software solution than rewire? I have got Maschine and Logic under my belt, and now am trying to utilize Reason. I’ve learned to record Reason in Logic, but I’m still lost with what I want to do orginally, which is to take a Maschine production and add Reasons sound processing to it. I particularly would like to use reason as a downstream processor for Maschine sounds. Am I only dreaming?
So I use MIDI to trigger it, then my audio interface has a “loopback” option so I can record or send audio between applications. No need for rewire. Now for you, you could bring everything together in Logic. Load Maschine as a plugin in Logic, and rewire Reason in Logic, then you could route Maschine sounds to Reason fx directly in Logic. I’m on a PC so I can’t try it but I know it will work 🙂
Thanks, I’ll try it now…!
cool man!
I have seen and tried some different approaches to using Maschine with Logic. 1. I open a blank project tried an audio track, a software track, or a ext. midi track with Maschine as an I/O, and got nowhere, 2. I made a template previously from studying this stuff. The “Maschine template I previously made for logic as an experiment has 16 logic instr tracks, each assigned to 16 MIDI channels, each going through Maschine I/Os with 8 Aux tracks in Logic. Previously recorded some midi notes corresponding to Maschine sounds but opened Maschine in the first I/O, loaded my… Read more »

Thanks!
no problem!
OK, been trying to follow the page you gave. I started by loading the pre-configured template. It could be it’s different in some ways than the vid. Anyways then I followed along the vid. Set the Maschine midi batch to notes and separate midi channels corresponding to the logic tracks, and set the environment object in logic (although confused there – am I supossed to delete it’s cable so it’s connected to nothing?). Anyways, Logic never did record in Logic, hitting record in Logic causes it to record in Maschine, which is interesting maybe better for certain objectives, however, not… Read more »
you have to be in midi control mode to even record from the pads into logic. Make sure you’re on an instrument track or whatever they are called in logic, and that should be routed to the Maschine track. I’m not a mac guy so I’m just guessing here, I’m sure Knock can verify or other Mac users. As for getting sounds, if you change the group while in midi mode, that changes which notes you will trigger, so I think by default in logic you need to be on group e to line up with the c3 notes that… Read more »
At least I can say I’ve learned that this not exactly straightforward or so it seems so far after 2 night’s work…Appreciate you rapid responses tonight!
yeah, each daw is different it’s some are more involved than others when it comes to using maschine and sequencing in the daw. Logic is one of those that…can be a little…uhm….”testy” so t speak.
You’re not the first to say this, many prefer to use it standalone or in other daws over logic. But get some rest, then come back to the video, and go over it again, I’m sure you will get it 🙂
I am still trying to find some rational workflow that works between Maschine and Reason. I bought the Rewire VST and it works nicely enough for playing – but bouncing the Reason sounds from in Maschine didn’t work. Next I’ll try to use the Record Re-wire VST setting instead of the Reason one. After using Maschine, I hate the confusing Record interface with it’s subatomic-sized graphics and supersensitive mouse that’ll keep jumping me inadvertantly somewhere I can’t undo….Has anyone successfully recorded this way?
Yeah man it’s not smooth at all. Basically what I did was just resample each part from reason into maschine using sync sample, the same way I do external gear.
Using the Rewire VST Record setting, I couldn’t get Record to record it’s own sounds. What is sync sample?
Well you could do drag and drop like I did in the video, or do it like this

How do you get the audio into maschine 2.0. It doesnt have that function where you can just drag into a new track.
The same way, the drag and drop moved over to the right side of the pattern section
