Yo what’s good MT Fam! Back with part 4 in the Maschine in Ableton Live tutorial
This time I’m bringing it all together to show how to arranging the parts you’ve created
I really dig Ableton Live’s workflow when it comes to arranging and building your song, you can get very spontaneous with it.
My goal with this series was to show you how well these two work together, they have some similarities and some differences but I really dig the workflow of both for the creation process.

You also can do some crazy stuff with the follow actions. and generate variations and fills from existing clips
Yep indeed. Just wanted to show the basics of arranging from session to arranger view.
And I’m still mad they haven’t implemented follow actions for scenes yet!
what r follow actions? and how do u make the tracks to audio from here
Follow actions will tell a clip what to do next, so I can set follow actions so that the song will play through by itself with changes and such.
Say for that verse part, I could set the first clip to have a follow action to play that next alternate clip when it’s done, then I can set the alternate to go back to the original when it’s done.
You can just render it like normal either as a whole wave or individual audio tracks
thats what has me wanting to get hooked up with ableton, the workflow looks spot on for messing around with ideas and seeing what you want to come up with on the fly… plus its compatibility with maschine is another definite plus!
i havent been messing with the lite much because its so limited but i’m hoping to pick up the upgrade on thursday!…
do you know any good sources for tutorials on ableton basics?… youtube isn’t to good for finding any!
Faderpro has a tutorial called “are you able” that’s good. Other than that, the Ableton site, Nick’s tutorials, AbletonTutor, there’s a few websites out there that do it.
and also can you launch clips with maschine in midi mode or do you need the launchpad thing to do it without the mouse and keyboard?
You can turn maschine into a launchpad, infact, there is a built in controller template that pretty much works this way and lets you launch the different clips from the pads.
good to know, wouldn’t mind using the mouse but i reckon it be much more fun and creative using maschine to launch the clips and do the recording!..
also thanks for the tutorials sites will defo check them out…
Yeah, it gets really spontaneous when using the controller instead of clicking, either way is pretty fast though, but def fun to trigger via pads or keys.
I finally understand how Ableton works now. This video really cleared how to arrange the song. This is definitely a different creative process and I can see why this is a preferred method of creation. I think I’ll stick with the Acid/Linear style of creation, but for me this was a good tutorial. Now I see both sides and that’s a good thing.
Word, yeah it really comes down to how you like to work. For those that come from hardware a lot really clicks with Ableton and how it rocks. But linear has it’s place too and the great part is Ableton let’s you do both 🙂
Great stuff for us Able heads to know. Ableton in my opinion is underrated .It can do more than one could think. Im not DAW bashing but lots praise Protools which it is the bomb, but ableton seems to be all around more fruitful. Im not trying to argue, LOL. Joe I thank you for your tuts on this, I also used live before maschine. I am incorporating your setup into my workflow. It is really a plus for my workflow. Once again you are a great teacher. MT FAM the greatest.
Right, I wouldn’t even compare the two, Live and Pro Tools are totally different in my book, Live is much more intuitive but it may not have all the editing tools and options of Pro Tools. I like Live way better than any other “daw” when it comes to productivity and creation, but when I want a “traditional daw” I go with Studio One 🙂
LOL…son I dont have Ableton… but this beat is FIRE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am on head nod Turbo..!
You stupid son lol, thanks
Right on bro thanks for continuing with the Live Tuts! Appreciate it!
No problem bro!
Yeah SJ, spot on. Keep these up bro….you are opening up avenues to take it to the next level! 🙂
Cool bro! Glad yall diggin it 🙂
how would you separate your drum if you do it like that ? or do you keep every on one track, kick snr, etc…
I could have sequenced my drums separately, or I could just send them to multiple outputs and route that to separate audio tracks.
Yep, props Joe – this has been a great series – always keen to know better ways to integrate Live and Maschine, as that is my intended workflow.
I have soooooo many ‘half-tracks’ in Maschine its not funny.
I just gotta get those babies into Live, and then get reeeeeal freaky with firing clips for arrangment.
None of this Maschine arranger bollocks!
Cool man, glad yall can dig it. I think they are very similar in concept, with Live being more flexible due to being able to fire off clips at random. They work well together, even if you just want to use Ableton as a final arranger and do all your construction of loops in Maschine.
Is there a way to place what tracks you want into arrangement view instead having to fire a track at the right time and get the timing wrong or etc.
well everything is tied to the beat so the changes of firing off beat are pretty slim. But I’ve never tried it that way, I don’t know if you can just drag them over or what, I’ll have to check it out. I always record my arrangements.
I think I just found my new “DAW”!! Thanks fam! I’ve been trying to integrate with FL, but this looks like a DREAM!! What are your thoughts on piano roll in Live vs FL studio? I’ve really liked how quick FL was…
You guys are the best!
Glad to help fam! Piano roll is pretty similar, but I haven’t used FL in a long time, FL has a really slick workflow too. But I do love Maschine with Live, nice couple 😉
Hey SaintJoe! So, um, I know I’m like 7 years late to this video, lol. I’m really digging all your Maschine w Ableton vids … thank u! They’re all really helpful. I’ve been using maschine for several years but Ableton only like less than a year. (I’m a very heavy pro tools user for decades, but am loving Ableton and Maschine for writing/producing) . I have Ableton Suite and Push 2 (sitting right next to my maschine mk3… love both of them for diff reasons). Anyway, I thought I’d ask if u have any recommendations for deeper Ableton tutorials —… Read more »
Thanks fam! I’d say make sure to go through all of the videos on the Ableton website, also, there’s some courses on LinkedIn Learning that may help as well https://linkedin-learning.pxf.io/nVYZV
