Hey what’s good fam?
Just a quick video to show the process of recording MIDI from Maschine 2.3 into Studio One version 3.
I still dig how simple and easy it is to setup the routing in Studio One, not to mention it’s flexible enough to allow setting up of various channels unlike some other DAWs.
It’s a cool way to work, plus it’s so quick to bounce the MIDI to audio that of course you don’t even have to route the audio out if you don’t want to.
Anyway, if you have any questions let me know!

Is there a way to set a template so you don’t have to re-set the midi channels for every project in Maschine,
The MIDI settings aren’t stored with the group, so it would change every time you change your group. But you could save a project template in Maschine for the plugin that has groups setup with the channels, you’d still have to setup the host output every time you load a new group though. You could also save it as a project in S1 if you want, but still, the midi output/host settings would change anytime you load a new group. The group input settings will be saved with the Maschine project though.
Okay cool. I’ll make it work. Thanks.
No doubt fam.
OKAY ST JOE, I APPRECIATE THE tutorial but this is not intuitive at all it works but if you want to change drumkits on the fly it would be annoying to keep having to reset midi channels each time you decide you may want a new drumkit. Can you help answer this for me please. All I want to do is use S1 as my daw and use maschine as a plugin so that i have access to all my kits and all maschine functions but use studio one for sequencing. So basically i want to produce in s1 get… Read more »
Yeah that’s just a maschine issue. If you want to work this way you’d have to configure the channels each time. Another way is to put the controller in midi mode and just trigger Maschine as a module instead of trying to record midi from it. Or drag and drop your loops after making them in maschine. Honestly when I work in a daw I just record straight to audio as it is too much of a pain to deal with midi this way.
Okay, so I like that I can pull up macshine as a vst then make my beat in machine but when I am done with the whole song I have one issue. I have all these drum parts that is recorded in maschine grid that I need to get to studio one how do I do this? Maschine irks me some times. I hate the daw but love the controller and functions. I like studio one but not being able to use maschine to record or track out directly in studio one is a pain. I do a lot with… Read more »
There are multiple ways to make it happen. The quickest way is to go to the file menu and export your tracks and pull them into S1 as wave files. So you’d have all of your separate drum tracks. Or, you could “track out” in real time.

Or you can drag and drop the MIDI (Or audio) from Maschine into S1

wut up st. joe so how are you enjoying studio one 3 so far and other then the drums you recorded did those sounds come from studio one 3
I dig V3, nice visual layout and some of the new additions are nice. I dig the new arranger track also.
The only sound that was from S1 was the pad/choir part, everything else was from external gear and the drums from Maschine.
St. Joe, is this possible to do this in Pro Tools?
I don’t have a copy of PT anymore, but if I remember correctly it doesn’t support this type of routing, you’d have to put Maschine controller in MIDI mode to trigger the sounds.
Thanks. I’ll get it a shot when I get home from work. Thanks again.
In order to trigger it, you’d do the same thing in terms of setting “sounds to midi notes” and giving each group it’s own MIDI input channel. But you’d have to put Maschine into MIDI mode to trigger the notes.
hello
what should i do if i want to change only the drum kits after i set up all those midi in & out settings?
Do i have to do it all the time when i load a new group?
thx
Unfortunately yes, we’ve been on NI to change this for years. When you load a new kit you’ll have to setup the sounds again to send to host and turn off midi through for the sounds again. Your group setup/routing will still work, so it will keep your group midi input active and keep the transpose setup properly as well as retain your “sounds to midi notes” settings.
I see. Thanks
No problem.
This initially attracted me to studio one. Is there anyway to get this to work similarly in Logic pro x? That would be great.
It will not work like this in Logic because AU plugins do not send MIDI output. You’d have to put Maschine into MIDI mode to do it, which isn’t quite the same process.

Hey St Joe. Thanks a bunch for the work you do. I have been trying to record to S1V3 using this set up but cannot see signal getting to record track. Any ideas. Mucho thanks in advance. RD
Glad to help. So what exactly isn’t showing up for you? You don’t see any midi data? Did you set the pads to output midi to the host? Did you make sure the input/output on the track in S1 is setup properly?
I am having the same issue I followed by he video watched it 3 times actually. But did not work. Everything works but the recording part when I press record I don’t get any midi info to the path .
The only way it will not work is if the midi routing isn’t setup properly. Double check in maschine as well as s1. Make sure the proper track and channel are enabled.
Hey St.Joe,
Is this routing possible in fl studio. I’m desperately trying to get this to work
No, FL doesn’t support the same type of routing as S1 and a couple of other daws, you’d just have to put maschine in “midi” mode to trigger the plugin.
Ok. thank you (RIP FL STUDIO) 🙁
Hi Cubase
Hahahaha lol
Yea this is the video I’ve been watching and following step by step.
So i think i got it to work. don’t know if this is a change or what but i had to put both input and output as HOST for it to work.
It has to be on host since it is running as a plugin. But the midi tracks need to be receiving from the plugin.
and it only records from the keyboard now. ok. i gonna go have a drink before i lose my mind
St Joe, how do I eliminate latency when recording midi from maschine to studio one 3? I made sure I routed everything correctly but after a few hits to my pads, the beat is off?
Does it gradually go off, or is it off from the start? I haven’t ran into that issue at all. What are the settings on your audio interface in terms of latency?
It gradually goes out of rhythm as I hit the pad
Hmm, I haven’t run into that issue, what are the settings on your interface in terms of latency, have you tried adjusting that? Or is it just a quantize issue?
I tried latency adjusting, I think its a quantize issue St Joe thanks
Ahh ok, was wondering if it could be that.
St Joe, I finally figured out the issue. You know how the scene engages as a loop silently on Maschine when used as a VST? Well when I turned the pattern all the way left it naturally shortens the pattern to nothing which in turn wont allow the loop in mashine. Are you getting me?? Now Im on beat with no issues of rythm wondering out of rythm.
Cool, glad you found a method that works for you!
