One of the major features of the new Maschine 2.2 update is the addition of chord and scale functions like the ones found on the Komplete Keyboard series.
This allows you to quickly lock the pads to specific melodic scales as well as use the pads to play various chord types and chord sets.
This feature works with any of the Maschine controllers, and can also be accessed from the NI keyboard controllers.
Currently you can’t use the features in Maschine from an external MIDI controller.
As usual, if you have questions feel free to ask.

Joe,
Great video as always. A few questions:
1) What if I want to change the root of the scale .. Like D or F# instead of C?
2) Is it possible to assign a chord to a pad so that I can make a kit of the chords that I need in a project?
1. You can change it like you normally do in pad mode (changing the root of the pad or changing octaves/transposing) in terms of the pads and what notes they play, but you can’t go in and edit the actual chords themselves.
2. No you can’t do any type of custom chord/pad assignments or chord sets currently.
Joe i can’t access Service Center, its crashing and tried to install it again but nothing, does anyone else have the same problem?Maybe its overloaded today? Cant wait to get the update and its frustrated!
You can change the root of the chord set by using button 5 to 8 (by octives and by semitones)
My Service Center has been crashing for ages. When it restarts and says it crashed and do you want to try updating again say NO and you can get to use the Service Center to update your software.
You can grabs the latest version from the NI download page but it will still try to update. Just let it crash and again do not retry when it askes.
Looks like NI need to fix something on their end but whatever it is they haven’t done it yet. Some sort of file verification issue with the new files or an issue with OS X Yosemite (10.10 and later are not yet considered by NI as supported OS X versions).
I’m using the latest maverick OS X,you think I should upgraded to Yosemite?
I can’t acces Service center no matter what at the moment!
You can download directly from your NI account instead, if Service Center isn’t working for you.
I would recommend the upgrade (if you are not already at 10.10) but take NI’s warning to heart that they are yet to declare OS X 10.10.x supported. You can still use Service Centre – even if you can’t update it because it constantly fails. That is what is happening to my – SC tries to update, fails, restarts. The next time it runs it tells you that it previously failed during an auto update. It asks you if you wish to retry. Click NO (don’t try again as it will just fail agin). When you click NO, SC will… Read more »
saintjoe that doesn’t work for some of us right now. The current version keeps trying to self update and it fails overtime with some sort of file verification error. The solution at the moment, for those of us that have this problem, is just to say NO when SC asks to retry a failed update. It will skip the update and run allowing downloads, licensing etc to be performed.
This maybe an issue with OS X Yosemite – NI are not yet supporting this latest version of the Mac OS.
You can’t go to the NI website and download from your account? I’m not talking about SC, I’m referring to your account directly on the NI site. http://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/downloads/
Of course that works as well. Didn’t realise that’s what you were referring to.
It just SC can still be used, if you skip the update on the second restart.
Great tip man!
can you create your own chord set by drag and drop the midi to the pads?
Not currently
Thanks,I’ll try again but didn’t find the download link so far out of Service Center.
Yeah, all your products should show in your account under downloads.
Here’s the link but I expect it won’t work for you just follow my previous advice and do not retry the self update if it fails again.

Oh the latest is at the bottom of the list not the top. Very confusing. You’ll note it’s version 2.5.9 repeat October 21 2014 and is only for OS X 10.8, 10.9 (not 10.10).
I hate autocorrect! should read “…dated October…”.
Loving this update from NI, thanks for the vids! You guys were right on time wit it!
Glad to help fam!
I have a Maschine Mikro II. Is there a way to use chords and scale mode with this controller?
How can I use this mode with out all the buttons that you demonstrate with your Machine Studio
Yes, you can access it the same exact way, by going into the pad mode screens and the note repeat screens.
Ok, I found the answer to my question in the 2.2 addendum doc.
Cool, enjoy!
Hi Joe,
I’ve a question on Chordsets. I beleieve the chordsets strictly confines to the notes in the Scale right ?
I selected Major Pentatonic Scale (C D E G A) and then selected Chorsets. I see Em(E minor) also listed in the chorset. Is that right ?
Yeah, the scale and chords work together, so the chords will be based on the scale you’re playing in.
But that’s my question. How come Eminor chord is listed in the Major Pentatonic Scale ?
Ahhh….I responded too quickly, I now see were asking about the actual “chordsets” and not just chords. The chordsets are static chords they are not impacted by your scale, where the harmonizer chord options will be based on your scale/key. That’s why you no longer see the scale when you switch to chordsets.
Oh ok. Thought Chorsets will be in sync to the Scales. That would be a great feature to have, so we can ignore the unwanted chords in the scale. or at lteast, define our own chords for the pads :).
Yeah I wish it was an option, to both lock them to the scales as well as be able to make our own chordsets.
Hopefully in 2.3 version :). Thanks for replying Joe.
We’ll see man! No problem, glad to help.
Techno 2 Go..
Hahahaha lol or pop, house, etc. Pretty much anything now.
Mikro has this right?
Yep, go into pad mode and turn on keyboard mode then you’ll get the options
Are the studio videos still available?
Yes, please refresh the page. Sometimes through all of the website updates some of the older video codes need to be refreshed on the backend do to how we are presenting the videos now. If you come across any that don’t seem to be working for you just let me know and I’ll check on my end. Thanks!
