Here’s an update for those wanting to record into Ableton in realtime without going into controller mode.
It’s a bit streamlined from my previous one, thanks to MIDI batch setup, it’s a bit easier to configure.
Of course if you have questions just ask.
Hey Saintjoe
I was wondering would this be possible with logic now the MIDI batch setup is available?
Logic doesn’t support internal routing between tracks like this so it will not work.
Hi Saintjoe,
I followed your tutorial step by step but I can’t record the midi track into ableton. The only difference between my and your softwere is that in the second box “MIDI from” of ableton I see only pre-and post-fx and I see no maschine2!
I can not understand why.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Make sure you are using the VST and not the AU plugin. AU plugins do not send MIDI output.
Thx! Now i can see in the 2nd box of Midi from the maschine2…. but unfortunately it still doesn’t record my midi inputs.. another thing i see is that when I switch the record button into ableton the sound group in maschine remains the same and it doesn’t change like in your video.
Make sure all of the routing is setup, including the routing in the external instrument.
Hi, the routing is ok, in fact all sounds me and i can write with the mouse a midi part in ableton and send it to a specific maschine group. With the percussive sound group everything works but when I choose an instrument or a melodic sound I can listen only the C3 note. Than I can play with my maschine pads but not live recording. Is it possible? What’s happening?
If you want to do it with an instrument or melodic sound you have to give that specific sound it’s own midi channel instead of the whole group on one channel which makes each pad have it’s own note.
Similar to this without the drag and drop part https://maschinetutorials.com/maschine-2-1-midi-drag-and-drop-instruments-into-ableton-live-9/
hey saint joe, why do you do external instrument instead of midi track in ableton? thanks love the tip!
External instrument allows you to have the audio and midi in the same track, if it was just midi, I’d have to do a separate audio track if I want to control the audio
cool that makes sense thanks saint joe
This is dope! Thanks Saint Joe, good work !!
Glad to help fam!
This works great! One question, though. If I want to play a melodic sound like horns or something, is there a way I can play the sound on my midi keyboard rather than maschine’s pads? I’ve set everything up the way you did in the video and gave my melodic sound its own channel like you described above to @benjs and it works but I’m not able to play the sound on my midi keyboard. Thanks for your help!
In that case just route a midi channel to the maschine track no need to set midi from the maschine plugin. Just set midi from your keyboard.
Saint joe I did everything you did in the video and it looks like your video but when I go to record in ableton It still isn’t recording the midi notes, any suggestions?
Make sure you have to track you want to record into record enabled.
St. Joe thanks a ton for all of your help. However, being so new to this trying to follow you on this one is tough. At least for me you are moving way too fast fam. Even with me pausing the video lol. Excuse the noobness. In Ableton under the spot where you select the FIRST “1 Maschine 2” you say to select that again, but I only have Post mixer available!? Help ya boy out here?? I apologize if this has already been addressed. btw I’m using Maschine 2.1.1, Ableton Live 9
No problem man, I understand 🙂
Make sure you’re using the VST and not the AU plugin, AU plugins do not have MIDI output, that’s why they don’t show up down there.
Thanks for replying St. Joe. Which VST are you referring to? I still only see in Maschine, for destination my MPK 49, Maschine Controller Virtual Output, Maschine Controller (MIDI output port 0), and Maschine 2 Virtual Output. “Make sure you’re using the VST and not the AU plugin” didn’t clear anything up here for me. Remember, newbie here. Thanks in advance.
The Maschine VST, I’m assuming you’re on a Mac and you’re using the AU version of the plugin instead of the VST version. In Ableton preferences there is an option to use VST plugins as well as AU.
Thank you. As always all the answers St. Joe. D man!!
Glad to help fam!
Man I figured out the issue. I didn’t have my VST folders mapped correctly in Ableton! Embarrassed. Thanks again. You’ve helped a lot of us learn about this stuff. Can’t thank you enough brotha. I’m certain I’ll be on here bugging you again at some point. Till then homie…
Cool bro, glad you got it working 🙂
is this midi batch different from the one you did in studio one
No midi batch works the same in any daw, it’s just a way to set the pads to specific notes or midi channels.
I’m doing everything. I have watched numerous ways and everything works EXCEPT when I go to record into live none of the notes get saved. they only get saved into machine and I don’t want that. I just want to be able to record directly into live. Please Help. I have been at this for 3 days straight. :-/ I feel like Im missing something that is not being explained on why ableton receives the notes but doesn’t record it into the step sequencer
Do not hit the rec button in Maschine, but make sure you have record enabled your track in ableton, then it should receive them properly. If you’re playing it and it’s triggering the sounds through the external instrument, if you have the external instrument record enabled it should work. If you want to send me your project file to take a look you can. Upload it to the service desk https://maschinetutorials.com/help/
Just following up to see if you got it working, never heard back from ya
Hey Joe, if I use this setup, then that means that I’m limited to only 15 usable midi channels, right????
Yeah pretty much, unless you open another instance of Maschine.
Is it possible to make a template in the Maschine 2/Ableton software for this crossover setup ? Or is it something that you have to manually route every time you want to use maschine 2 with Ableton?
You can save the project as a template if you want. Or save the maschine project itself.
I got how to save it as a project file but how would you go about setting up the project as a template for it in maschine 2?
If you save the Ableton project you don’t need to save a project in machine. But if you want to, just go to the file menu in maschine and save the project.
