Hey what’s good fam, just wanted to do a quick video to make sure you understand how to drag multiple instruments into Ableton from Maschine.
Many users get hung up on the “sounds to midi notes” option and try to use that to drag instruments, but this will not work if you have actual instruments on each pad/sound instead of drums or chops.
When you have instruments you want them to have their own channel to respond on and not just a single note, but this is still really easy to do either for single instruments or multiple instruments in a group.

Are you using version 2 or version 1 of maschine?
Thanks for the tutorial St. joe. I am pretty good with Maschine now (thanks to you) but I want to sequence and arrange my tracks in Ableton. Can you give some advice on workflow between Maschine and Ableton 9? I love making all my foundational beats in Maschine, but should I then export audio to Abelton? Use Maschine as a plugin and stay in MiDi? Export to Midi? What do you find is the best workflow to keep your creativity flowing using Maschine and Abelton? Would be good to see a general workflow tutorial using both tools to create a… Read more »
Really depends on your preference. Do you plan on changing up the MIDI once in Ableton? If not, dragging over audio loops can be quick and useful. Doesn’t require as much routing either, and you can quickly create new loops in Maschine to drag over if you want. However if you want to use MIDI effects and manipulate the data in Live, you’d want to drag or export your MIDI into Ableton. I do different ways depending on how I’m working. If I’ve created the main concept in Maschine a lot of times I’ll just drag the audio or leave… Read more »
Thanks a lot St. Joe!! Good lookin out brotha. I’m going to try a few methods based on what you mentioned until I see what’s comfortable. I still need to really learn Ableton better (haven’t really used it since version 6). I especially like the midi effects like the Note and chord mode and of course the ability to warp audio. My main issue is that its time consuming to do all the arrangement in the Mashine sequencer, otherwise I’d complete my track end-to-end in Maschine. All that said, Maschine is the best drum maschine/sequencer i’ve ever owned. I owned… Read more »
Nice man, glad to help spark some ideas!
I followed all instructions from the video. However, after everything has been setup, I can see the input volume in Ableton when hitting the Maschine pads. However, I have no sound. Is there something I missed in a previous setup?
Put the Maschine track monitor on “in” instead of auto, and you should be able to hear it.
Hi, I’m a House/Techno music producer and I really like the way I can use maschine 2.0 in Live 9, especially because I can now sequence in Live 9, even using push and make drumrolls ( with different pitches/notes) because each sound is now setup as an instrument in Live with midi and audio coming out of the same channel. Awesome!!! Question: is there a way to make automation visible in each external instrument channel in Live for each corresponding sound instead of all the automation showing up in the channel that says Maschine 2.0…. In house music there can… Read more »
There are a couple of issues here, first, Ableton only shows automation on the actual plugin track, however, you could program cc automation using edit mode in the midi clip but the next issue comes with the fact that you can’t simply assign midi cc to the knobs/parameters in Maschine. Now if you’re using something like kontakt or other plugins in Maschine you may be able to get it to work that way by manually assigning/learning different midi cc to parameters directly in the plugin. For example in Kontakt you can right click on a parameter and assign a midi… Read more »
thanks for the tute but my ‘MIDI to’ in Ableton does not list Maschine as an option. Instead there is just a list of MIDI-3, MIDI-4 channels etc.
thanks
Make sure you’re using the VST plugin and not the AU plugin, AU plugins do not send MIDI output.
thankyou
No problem
Hello all… im new to this group and still pretty much a newb to maschine but I feel i’m catching on fast. I love it so far! I’ve been wondering and haven’t found an explanation of this, is when you are transferring midi notes from Maschine into ableton, I am very curious to know does the swing that was applied in maschine get transferred as well when you are copying midi notes from maschine into ableton? I ask this because I really like how swing is used in maschine as it feels more designed like old school analog drum machines… Read more »
Welcome to the fam! If you drag you MIDI out of Maschine and you’ve applied swing then the swing will be transfered over properly. For years I’ve wished Maschine would update the MIDI notes in the sequencer when applying swing so you can see it adjust the notes the same way quantize does. But yeah, it will transfer over.
How do you make this configuration work with multiple Groups with Maschine? Specifically, using the External Instrument method?
If you’re using instruments you only have 16 channels in total in Maschine because each will have it’s own midi channel. So you really can’t do that with multiple groups.
Thank you.
No problem fam!
