Here’s a tutorial for the Cubase users that prefer to record/sequence their MIDI directly into Cubase from Maschine
Of course we know they changed the MIDI setup in Maschine 2.0 so that the old way of working caused a MIDI feedback loop and just was a pain to work with in general.
In this tutorial I show a workaround that allows you to switch between recording MIDI and still having full control over your sounds without going into MIDI control mode.
It’s not perfect, but it definitely allows you to get some work done in a way that doesn’t require MIDI mode.

Excellent. Thank You.
No doubt fam
is there a work around for logic pro x?
I’m not sure if Logic allows you to record MIDI directly from a vst into the sequencer. If so, it should work.
This is one step away from perfect for my work flow! Thank you…..could you please try the same setup in Logic Pro?
I do not believe this will work in Logic as you can’t route midi from one plugin to another, I could be wrong, but that’s why we’ve always had to use “midi mode” to sequence Maschine in Logic. Either way, I will have Knock look into it, if it’s possible he will post the vid.
I downloaded the maschine midi host group file. How do you get it into the menu as utilities like you have it?
You basically just save it as a group, then find it in your browser, click edit at the bottom, and give it a tag, I chose utilities as my tag for it.
I get an error when I try to load it. I know this is probably a simple process, but could you be more detailed?
How can we use an already existing project in Maschine in Cubase?
Open it from the Maschine file menu. What type of error are you getting?
It simply says “error” then underneath that heading it shows the path to the file. When I try to open it up traditionally, (I have MK2 and 2.0), it shows the file, but it’s greyed out and I can’t select it.
Make sure you have the proper permissions to the file, does it open in standalone? Does it use plugins that are a different format than what you’re running in cubase (32 bit vs 64 bit)?
I’m on a mac and honestly don’t know which permissions to be looking for. It doesn’t open in stand alone, I get the same message. I’m not sure how to verify that last question.
Sounds like a corrupted file. Does it happen with all of them?
I downloaded the same file several times and got the same result.
Which file are you downloading?
Does this method work for protools 11? Please help, I’m losing my mind!
Pro Tools doesn’t have the proper routing, it only works this way in certain DAWs that allow routing between tracks.
Bummer, thanks for the quick response. You and Knock are lifesavers! Plus the return of the “midi to notes” makes dragging easier. Better then nothing.
No problem, I hope they come up with a way that works for everyone though 🙂
hi saint joe ,is the old way still possible of routing your midi in cubase , or is this the only way now in 2.0?
thanks for the great tutorials.
Which old way do you mean? You can still just trigger the plugin via midi, but if you want to record midi from the plugin into Cubase you have to setup the midi and do the workaround.
hi sry the late reply i been offline for a while , the old way you could assign individual sounds to midi tracks in cubase by right clicking and going to sound midi batch setup and make the root note settings etc.. I’m struggling to assign sounds the same way from 2.0.
it plays the same sound to all the diff midi tracks in cubase that have different midi notes , but i assume its playing the same sound in another key.
not sure where I’m going wrong .
You can right click on the group and do a “sounds to midi channels” to give each pad it’s own midi channel. Or, you can go to the midi input settings for the pad in the channel section, and turn on midi input. If you turn on midi input for the whole group, that’s like making the whole group respond to the same channel.
thanks so much saint joe that makes more sense , got this tutorial working now .
noticed the extra midi host channels you created and saved played groups into one midi output in cubase.
will try what u said now to give each pad its own midi channel in cubase , like in in 1.0 .
I’m wanting to route kits sounds separately in cubase .
thanks saint joe will try that .
Yeah for kits you’ll want the whole group to have a midi channel, for individual instruments/sounds you’ll want to have each pad with it’s own midi channel. Let me know if you have any questions though 🙂
Hi St Joe, did you specify “sounds to midi channels” in this actual tutorial configuration? I have painstakingly tried to follow the tutorial exactly, step by step , but I can no longer hear, or record any sounds. I’m running Cubase 7.5 and Maschine One, software 2.0, and OSX Mavericks. For my outputs from the drum kit, for example on Pad 9 are: destination: “host”, channel: 9, for Pad 10 it is channel 10… is that the right idea? Man, does the Maschine make me feel addled! Thanks in advance.
If you’re wanting to just record the drums, you would use “sounds to midi notes” on the midi host group. But if you want each and every drum to be on it’s own midi channel, you would put the group in “sounds to midi channels” that way each pad can have it’s own midi channel to respond on. You need to put the output to host on the midi group, not the actual drum groups. On the drum group you just need to turn on midi input for each pad so it responds to midi channels. I didn’t use “sounds… Read more »
Gooid evening, thanks for the quick response, for some reason, after much experimentation, Cubase seems to RECORD midi(at leastI can see the notes on the key editor now in Cubase) , but it will not play them back. The only thing that plays back is what is on the Maschine screen i.e. if I press “play” on Cubase it just plays the selected scene on Maschine. If I deactivate Maschine , Cubase will not play what was recorded. At the time I was recording, I could monitor on the speakers.. Any ideas?
Double check to make sure the midi is routed back to the Maschine track, also make sure you don’t have the track muted.
you make life better man.
Hahahaha, glad to help!
I’m looking through the post to find out how to save the host midi setup the way you did.
I downloaded the file and extracted it. I opened maschine and went to file menue to open it but it only looks for projects…
I double clicked the downloaded “host midi file” and it opened into maschine 2.0 standalone. I just don’t know how to save it> could you please dummy proof that for me. thank you for time.
You’d have to save the group, right click on the group name and “save as” but you don’t really need the host midi file anymore since they updated the midi routing back to normal. You can just set it up directly from the group you want to trigger.
TO MY QUESTION ABOVE
FOUND IT.
ALL I HAD TO DO WAS SEARCH A LITTLE. MAN THIS SITE HAS EVERYTHING I CAN ASK RIGHT NOW

Glad to help!
saw your comment after I posted.
So you say directly from the group that I want to send into Cubase.
Ill experiment a little bit but could you explain that process. I’m a total newbie with new hardware and I’m just cramming all this knowledge in so I can start back up with my work 🙂
It would be exactly as above, except you’d make the settings on the group instead of using a host group, here’s a video in Ableton but the process would be the same as far as the group settings

AWESOME. Thank you Boss
Glad to help!
I can’t access my VST instrument panel under devices. I’m using cubase LE6 on Mac. F11 doesn’t work either. Can you help?
I’m not sure if LE has the option to load plugins as vst instrument rack.
ok, thanks
ok, thanks. Do you know another way to make either maschine or cubase trigger the other to play?
You could put Maschine into MIDI/controller mode and trigger it that way.
