One of the new additions to Maschine 2.0 is the ability to import your own MIDI data.
I know many have wished for this for a long time, and the way to do it couldn’t have been easier!
In this tutorial I show you how to import MIDI data for an entire group, such as a MIDI drum pattern, and also how to import for a specific sound so if you wish to import say a melody file for keys, synths, etc.
Of course if you have any questions let me know!

It’s On!! I’ve been wanting this feature for a long time. Are there going to be anymore more videos on the midi functions?
Yesssssssssssss, it’s dope!
And ….you know it bro…much more on the way. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
MG, I haven’t imported midi since REason 2 lol. This is going to be wild
Dang! Reason 2.0! Lol
Wow! I guess I’m old school. I’m a heavy midi user.
Looking forward to importing some of my iOS sequences in with this feature! Simple, short, and clearly demonstrated. Thanks!
Yes indeed fam!
I can’t get the midi import feature to work for some reason! It’s all good for a single sound but when I try to bring in a whole kit…I get nothing. Have you seen this before? Any ideas?
How are you importing it? Does the data show up in the group at all? Have you tried dragging it into the group?
I’ve tried both…dragging and right clicking then importing but no love. There’s no data…unless I drag it onto a single sound then it’s all there but all pushed onto one another. Not sure if it’s a bug or not. I don’t have the hardware connected right now…will check it out in the studio in a minute and see if it makes a difference.
I wonder if it could be the midi file, like maybe a different format, v1 vs v2 or something? I know there are a few midi file types out there. Would be interested to see. If you want to email it to me I can check it out help@MaschineTutorials.com
You were right man! I just tried downloading some random midi drum loop of the net and it worked perfectly. I wonder how I get around it…I’ve tried exports from both logic and ableton and neither will work…and they don’t give you midi export options. Will mess around and let you know.
Nothing I do works. If you ever get a free minute, I’d love to see if you can export a simple beat from ableton and then import it into maschine. Definitely not working here. Dammmn.
OK, I’ll see if I can try some over here too
Solved the problem. If you want the midi to be on a group, it has to come from a drum machine with separate channels originally. The midi I was trying to import came from a midi clip in ableton that was connected to maschine…so it didn’t have separate channels, just the notes on different keys.
To get around it, I just created a drum rack, copied the midi clip into that and then exported. Comes through as group into maschine with no issues. Really annoying workaround though. Be interesting to see if anyone else has that issue.
I guess that kinda makes sense, since each pad is really it’s own channel in Maschine. Though it would be cool that if you drag to the group level, it just fills it up with the sounds on different pads. Because I’m sure not every midi file is setup with the sounds on a different channel, yet most of them seem to work fine.
Thanks so much for your help…I didn’t even realise there were different types of midi files until now. haha. Never would have worked that one out.
Appreciate it!
No problem man!
Can you browse and load MIDI from the Studio hardware?
no you can’t
just want to say you have the best tutorials out there ! as I’m’ looking on your site your answering the questions I want to know about !
Glad to help! If you have a question you don’t see feel free to ask!
Nice importing tut, what about saving midi patterns made in maschine? Im guessing the export feature, but would be nice to store and organise them in maschine user browser somehow. For example some basic beat midi files, and basic chord progressions. Write in maschine, save, recall?
That’s another option they removed smh, we used to be able to save our own patterns and load them back in from the browser. You can export midi from maschine and save it to a folder, and make that folder a favorite in your files menu, that’s currently really the only way to do it. I may do a video on it.
Yeah, I really think that was a move backwards – losing the ability to browse and load patterns from the hardware – and then to making it possible to browse and load MIDI from the hardware.
Oh – just read your comment SJ – I’ll have to check out that video!.
Once it’s in the favourites folder, is it browsable and load able via the Studio hardware?
Er…I meant that to read ‘making it NOT possible to browse and load MIDI from the hardware’
Just reread that post – please let us know if you do make that tutorial.
Hi, I have some midi files I want to import into Maschine. The problem is that when I import the instruments are all messed up. Its only the kick which falls into “correct place”, meaning the kick in the midi files goes where the kick is in my Maschine-Group. My midi files have the kick on C1. Snare on E1. Closed hats on G#1 and open hats on A#1. I have the group input to C1 as root. Also tried to change the transpose and stuff, but no luck. Is there a way to make the snare and the hats… Read more »
The thing is the way Maschine imports midi it just puts each channel on a pad, unless you import it into keyboard mode. Each pad is set to c3 by default though the notes don’t make much difference unless you’re dragging into keyboard mode. If you are just dragging into a group, there really is no way to say “snare here” and “hat here” because Maschine kits are not setup to general midi standards so the sounds can change from kit to kit.
Ok., would have been nice with a transpose option on input. Maybe that would do a difference. For me its only midi for keys/synths etc(keyboard mode) which has any value when browsing. Cant bother manually drag and sort the midi everytime I import drum midi. If doing this while browsing through heaps of midi one gets mental before noon.
Yeah, I totally agree, drum midi is beneficial when saving your own patterns and such you’ve made in Maschine I think, other than that, midi for keys/keyboard mode is more useful.
ive been looking for a while for decent midi files – where would you suggest getting them from? the generic ones i have found are a bit crap to be honest – would be nice to build up a library but drawn a blank on where to get decent files from so far.
I don’t really use them, so not sure, but there are some sample libraries that come with them, and some that are exclusively made up of midi files. Do a search for midi libraries and you should find some.
