In Maschine 2.0 we have a lot of new options for mixing and routing, including the ability to sidechain.
In this tutorial I wanted to make sure you understand how to route your audio between groups for fx processing if you want, as well as how to setup the sidechain input on internal and external devices.
If the plugin supports sidechain, Machine 2.0 makes it very easy to set that up and it works the same for internal effects, NI plugins, and third party plugins.
Of course if you have questions on a specific area of routing just ask, this video is here to give you the basic overview of where to look and how to set it up.

i’m trying to figure out some routing on this group i made for my blofeld. i have the one track that i do midi in and the rest is just a one note long pattern for recording the midi; however, when i go to mix within this external synth group, when i adjust the fader of one sound, all the sounds in this group adjust with it. should there be a different routing set for each one of the pads you record the audio from the midi notes played by the blofeld?
found out the mixer section in the 2.0 software has a weird select all feature, where I guess i had all selected from doing something before. you have to shift click until only one sound is selected. you can’t rely on the pattern view, where you select a pad on the software. it’s a weird light gray that you don’t want selected on multiple tracks.
so, i’ve found an interesting routing problems though. i have to mute the hardware synth group completely to not have that synth still playing when i hit the keys on my midi keyboard, when i’m playing in another group, so I can listen to the stuff i played in my hardware synth group. it will play with anything else i play from another group.
answered my own question again :p …you have to create another group for your audio files you record from your synth, and copy and paste each track with all settings and plugins to the new group dedicated to these audio files, so you can mute your hardware synth group, so it doesn’t play when your playing your other software synth groups. i also make another group for the midi files I play in the hardware synth group and name those, so I can keep the midi just in case.
a cleaner way is to just change the audio input on the external synth slot for recording midi, and you won’t hear any sound from that group now. no need to drag all the recorded synths to another group now.
Sorry bro, I was out watching Thor last night 🙂
But yeah, it all depends on how you have your midi setup, you shouldn’t hear your synth unless you’re sending midi to it or you have it set to respond to all midi input. As long as you set the midi output you should be good to go. I record like you do with the midi notes to create (tracks) and one channel of midi for the synth, glad you got it going 🙂
werd…now i’m looking at how to automate params on the synth, that may not have a dedicated knob like pitch (drawing a curve would be nice but it’s not selectable). i don’t even know how to assign pitch to a macro, on the blofeld. i wonder if it’s easier to do after you record the midid of the external synth to audio. i’ll probably figure it out today lol but if you have any pointers, i’ll take them! of course there are probably pitch plugins for audio.
Down in the bottom you can assign various midi cc and draw them in, if you have blofeld set to respond to a specific midi cc for pitch it would work by drawing it in if you wanted to
I see that part but I don’t know how to set the blofeld to respond to certain CC. That’s why I chose the mod wheel method. How can I?? Which is the easiest way?
ah, my midi controller’s pitch bend wheel can be modulated. what if you wanted to automate the filter with a curve & not through the hard ware synth modulation matrix? is the best way to assign the mod wheel to the param that you want to draw a line in for? i think maschine will let you keep doing that for multiple params too and draw in multiple lines with the mod wheel for diff params. you have to do all this while you have your midi still there of course. only the pitch wheel will work on audio.
Check the blofeld specs and see what midi cc it responds to, you may be able to assign one to the filter, o ryou could just assign the modwheel as you mentioned.
What’s the difference between sending your audio out somewhere and sending it as an AUX out?
An aux mixes the fx with your original signal, it’s “in addition to” whereas sending it directly to an effect makes it go entirely through that effect.
Joe,
Great video!
Only routing question is this – if I’m internally sampling, can I sample from a specific pad and not an entire group? You did this in 1.8 in the video where you use iPad to sequence maschine – you specifically sampled from one pad – but I can’t figure out how to do this in 2.1 .. Thanks!
It’s possible they changed it due to no longer being limited by groups….though I feel the option should be there still.
SaintJoe,
Is sending the main output the same as just loading an FX on the sound?
I’m looking to try to use the bus option for routing in machine, and im getting that I need to use the Aux instead. What i need to do is go experiment but I think i’m getting confused between the Destination and AUX options
You can do whatever you want, the reason you can send the main output is it will allow you do to more in terms of building multi fx in a separate group. You could also use aux if you want to mix in a little bit. You can send the main if you want a bunch of sounds or groups to use the same effect without loading it twice.
Great video. I’m just getting back into my music since school is out. That last semester was a mutha! I don’t think I even powered up my maschine for the last couple months. Anyway, I’m back and gettin busy again. I had the effects routing down on 1.8 but I needed a refresher course with 2.0. This video did it for me. Thanks again bro. #lifesaver
Welcome back, always glad to help man 🙂
Never really go the concept of FX routing via a group till this video – thanks!
Glad to help fam!
