Great tutorial – I know this will help a lot of people out there.
I’d be interested to see a Part Two to this tutorial, just outlining the basic workflow that having such DAW transport controls via the NI hardware enables.
I’ve been still using Megatroid’s incredible ‘MEGAMaschine’ template when using Maschine as a controller for Ableton (http://megatroid.com/2012/05/megamaschine-version-2-release/) – and obviously its controls for Live are far more comprehensive.
But still, I’d be interested in see how you work with the controls that you showed in the tutorial above. It all helps – anything to help refine the workflow.
Yeah it depends on your workflow. I mean it basically just allows you to control the transport of Ableton while in regular Maschine mode. I like NI’s new ableton template, it’s really well done and useful now imo.
so what mode are you in when you are controlling Maschine in Ableton? I did everything in the tutorial but access any of my content within Maschine. Also, I had a quetsion about pad colors within Maschine. I see your tutorial is for the Mikro and I followed the same procedure for Maschine but the pads did not change colors. Any suggestons?
I followed your Ableton workflow 2.1 and have that working PERFECTLY, with an external instrument each connected to a group from maschine. I’m excited I was able to save that as a template.
But, I followed THIS tutorial to a T, loaded that template, and the transport controls did nothing — not only record, but any of them … ?!
Make sure you set it up inside of the preferences and make sure you have sync turned on in ableton preferences for the port maschine is on. Make sure you’ve enabled host transport control in the actual mackie templae.
I have Ableton 9 if that makes a difference, and under control surfaces, I have MackieControl but for input, I only see Maschine Controller Mk2. That’s what I have listed … Transport buttons doing nothing 🙁
You either need to have Maschine plugin loaded or you need to have Maschine in MIDI mode. I just tried it and it’s working. Make sure “remote” is enabled on the mackie control port/maschine port I said sync but I meant “remote” 🙂
Joe, I think the issue is that in ableton, the control surface preference needs to say “MAschine Mk2 Virtual Input” for the input and “Maschine MK2 Virtual Output” for Output. That is working!
quick question tho, id like to also be able to control ableton’s tempo, tap tempo, and metronome like i normally would with maschine. for example, shift+play on maschine to turn abletons metronome on/off. And so on. can you help me out man. Thanks!
You’re gonna want to use the Ableton template for Maschine instead of host transport control, you can download it from the service center. I will be doing a video showing how to install it and also one showing how it works with Live 9, but the concept is the same for Live 8.
In your MIDI Sync preferences you can choose your control surfaces. The Maschine template has controls that are more customized for the controller. The Mackie is just basic control/transport.

Just regular machine mode. As for the pad colors, that only works on the new mk2 controllers not the originals.
What is the equivalent of Remote in Studio one SJ?
You would just make sure to set it up as a control surface using mackie control and you’ll be good.
Joe,
I’m missing something.

Ahh yes the ports show up differently on mac 🙂
This one was key for me Joe!

Cool thanks joe
no problem fam!
Where are you goinbg to find the template menu in ableton? Whats the difference in using the mackie template & ableton template for maschine?
In your MIDI Sync preferences you can choose your control surfaces. The Maschine template has controls that are more customized for the controller. The Mackie is just basic control/transport.
