Hey what’s good fam, hope all is well!
Today I’m sharing another iOS tip, if you remember a while ago I did a video on using chord generator apps from iOS with Maschine.
That was at least a year or so ago.
This is another video I’ve been wanting to show you as well, as I am always getting asked how to use arps or step sequencers in Maschine.
Now the current routing isn’t really friendly to those using arps and other midi effects, but if you have an iOS device it’s very simple to setup and get creative.

Joe, great video … You showed how to do this for PC, but how do you do it with MAC? I know it’s simple but I don’t know what to do lol. Thanks!
On mac os you can setup network midi directly in Mac OS
Go to App/Utilities and open up your Audio/MIDI setup. You should see an option to click “network” in MIDI devices. You would click the + sign or whatever is says to add a new session. After that on your ipad you should be able to connect to it by setting you app to use network session as it’s MIDI output.
I do have an irig pro. How would I connect to iPad and to computer?
Plug the cables up to your midi interface, iRig out to input.
Well, I’m having a new problem. I have Y cable from headphone out on iPad to input 3/4 on KA6. I see the green input lights for 3/4 on, but I’m not hearing sound unless I have maschine on … UGH!
Yep, the ka6 doesn’t have realtime monitoring of inputs 3/4 on the main outputs, you have to have them own in a host of some sort.
What’s crazy is I could have SWORN I got this to work yesterday … I guess maschine was running and I didn’t know lol.
and once i connect the cables, what settings do I change? I posted something similar on bottom of other video ..
What cables do you have connected and where? To record the audio set the input in machine to record your proper input. If you want to send midi out from maschine turn on midi output for the ka6 if that’s what you have the midi connection to the iPad setup on. Same for midi input from the iPad. Turn the input on in machine preferences.
Joe,
1) Can you give me a use-case when you’d send midi out FROM maschine into iPad?
2) This is exactly what I don’t understand. If I want to record midi from iPad (like using sunrizer synth as you do in video), what settings do I have in maschine? I understand how to do it if it’s wireless, but if I’m connected, I am complteely lost.
Connections I have:
keyboard > Mac via USB
iPad > irig pro. But how do I connect irig pro to KA6? Do I connect the midi cable? I’ve tried that ..
I think it’s your understanding of MIDI that’s causing you confusion. If you want to “play” sunrizer from within Maschine and you want to trigger it from your keyboard, you would use midi to do so. If you want to play it from your ipad by touching the screen then you don’t need midi, you just need to record the audio. MIDI is a trigger, it sends note information, not audio, so you send it “from” the device you want to use “to” the device or destination you want to trigger. So if you want to use your keyboard to… Read more »
Joe, I think I got you (and yes, you’re right – I don’t understand this so well).
I do think I understand the difference between the midi and audio …. I just can’t get maschine to work the way you do in your video! I’ll watch the video above, but I think there’s something in a connection I’m not doing right, specifically in maschine. I set up a sound and make it a midi and set it to KA6 … and then in the iPad itself, set the midi through irig?
Watch that video, then think of your iPad as an external synth, then it will make sense. I’m sure you understand the difference between midi and audio, but it’s the way midi in/out works that is causing you confusion. However, once you get a grasp of midi flow and how it works you’ll be doing whatever you want to do from now on 🙂
Did the discontinue StepPolyArp, I went to apps and it’s not coming up in the search. Thanks
It’s an iPad app I believe so make sure you’re searching for iPad or both and not just iPhone apps.
