This quick tutorial shows you how to apply swing or groove settings to the master output, individual groups, or even individual sounds within the maschine sequencer.
The ability to apply swing to individual sounds is a new feature that came in Maschine 1.6
Swing allows you to shift and pull the groove of your tracks to give it a more human feel as opposed to rigidly sticking to the grid or quantize settings

Not seeing the Groove tab… is that in 1.6 only?
Oh snap, you just said it’s 1.6 only about 40 seconds later. Guess I need to update!
My fault bro, yeah it’s a 1.6 option 🙂
Great having swing per pad in 1.6!
I dont wanna mess with betas so i’m waiting for the official release but…do you think i should upgrade to the 1.6 beta? I’d really love having swing per pad right now.
And that’d be great if you do a tutorial about the different types of grooves (1/8, 9/16, etc)
Thanks 4 this one!
Once they go to public beta it’s pretty close to final release so all the major bugs are usually worked out, that said, it’s still a beta so use your own judgement.
I’m always using betas so I have no problem with it, and it’s been stable for me.
Hey SJ what is the invert button for?? I cant find it anywhere in the manual. Also cycle 3/16..is that like 16 trips?
Producer Stylzkeyz
invert changes the way swing pushes the notes, sorta like pushing them late vs pushing them early
I treat 3/16 like 16 triplets
hey pimpn!
in simple terms, how would you example the master, groups and sounds!? when i try to work between all three, i always mess something up! what im i doing wrong
Remember everything will add, so if you swing the sounds then swing the group, it will add swing to the swing, same with master
so if you just want an overall swing on the whole track, use master, if you just want it on a specific group use that, if you just want to tweak the swing on different sounds use the sound level swing.
Greetings saintjoe! God bless you. Please I need your help. I’m not professional yet, I’m still a beginner so it’s ok to laugh at my question lol. Ok I made a nice drum beat in a pattern in a 4 bar. Ok I increased the bars to 16. How can I copy the drumbeat pattern in the 4 bars and elongate it so it can fill up the 16 bars? I tried to copy but each time I highlight the drumbeat pattern and right click it, it just disappears. What I do is that I remake the pattern all over… Read more »
You can hit the double button and double it to 8 bars, then double again to 16 bars 🙂
Hit the pattern button, then hit double on the left screen and it will double it for you.
I will do a video showing this and a few other pattern edit functions.
Like i said im a beginner i dont even know what/where the double button is, what/where the pattern button is? is it possible you can describe them for me? do you mean on the softtware? or Hardware?
on the controller, hit the pattern button, then on the left screen you’ll see the double button
I will do a video on it for you, stay tuned.
Hey bro thank You God bless you. Please I have just one last question. I made a drum pattern, which was for a song. I wanted to used the drum pattern and the song and merge them together with the help of pro tools to become one song. Ok when I made the drum pattern on Maschine I played the song the drum pattern was supposed to be with on Itunes. So the drum pattern was playing with the MAschine software and the song was playing on ITunes and it rhymed perfectly! At first I had to increase the tempo… Read more »
I’m not sure why it would be off other than maybe it just didn’t start at the right spot, if you saved it the tempo should be the same. I suggest in that situation you drag the wave out as audio after you make it, since you are wanting to load the stuff up in your daw afterwords.
Also you can take a few bars of the song, drop it in maschine as a wave, and make the beat to it, that way you can have them together and make sure they match.
ok thanks bro
No problem.
Oh yeah I saved one of my projects and exported it on the desktop to send the beat to someone to rap to it. I know I definitely did something wrong because when I exported the beat, it became 59.7 MB and that is just too big for a beat. Can you tell me what I did wrong? I know I have to do something but I just don’t know what
that is normal, you are exporting to a wave file it’s going to be about that size or more depending on how long the song is.
saintjoe please my pads are acting childish lol. When I want to record a drum pattern for some reason it acts so slow. They start to overlap meaning once I start to hit the pad its like I hit faster then I hear the drum sound of the pad I hit and it just makes me mad. Is there something I can do? I tried going to preferences Hardware Pads and sensitivity and velocity scaling but all that still does not work I still feel the pads are slow especially when I’m recording. Please can you help me?
Check the buffer settings on your soundcard, lower them if you can to get a better response. Also make sure input quantize isn’t turned on.
I use a mac so how do i get to buffer settings? and for the quantize do i go to Maschine-Preferences- Defaults-Input-quantize? then i click none? or how do i do that?
Yes in the default preferences turn input quantize off, also hit the grid button and make sure it’s off, you can also turn it off in the pattern button I believe, not looking at it right now. Buffer settings of your sound device, so core audio device or whatever you’re using, you can also adjust buffers in maschine preferences under audio.
Hey Saint Joe I have just two problems. My Maschine is acting really weird and because of these 2 problems I have not made a beat in ages. Ok you know how to arrange the beat in a way to make it a song? Right? Ok you know where it has numbers 1 – 16 under the scenes? I would make a beat in number 1 then I would want to make an Intro, Chorus, Verse 1, then Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus then Outro. I would copy number 1 and paste it on number 2 because I was watching one… Read more »
Make sure you’re not just copying the group, it sounds like you’re copying the group and not the actual scene. When you click, make sure it’s on the scene 1 nd not group A or whatever your drum group is.
Yeah i copied just the scenes. The scene 1 has everything so i even split it but only the drum patterns is copied and not everything else
Make sure you didn’t use the select button to highlight the drums only
Saintjoe believe me when I say you are the greatest! It is now working thank you for your help! Ok here is my last problem. When I want to make a beat right, I first start with the drum pattern. I would go to Bank and click kits, then Type and click Vinyl Kit then go to Results and click Dracula Eastwood Kit. When I load it I see recorded patterns already. What I do is I highlight the pattern and erase it. I now increase the bars to 8 and start making my own pattern. You know the transparent… Read more »
Uncheck the lil box that looks like 16 squares at the bottom of the browser. This will load the kit without any patterns at all.
As far as the playback thing, I’d have to see/hear that lol. Not sure what would cause it. Make sure you don’t have it synced to anything or set to loop at a certain spot. But still, that seems very weird.
Thank you sooooo much! God bless ya
No problem, glad to help!
Dope video and great comments. I am trying to make electronic music so the swing aspect really isn’t very useful to me but when I decide to start chopping away at my 500 plus vinyl collection this swing option is the shizzle!!
swing is important in electronic music too! lol, thanks fam!
Ayo why isn’t my picture coming up!! Hispanic conspiracy man!
did you go to gravatar.com and set it up? you need to go there and setup an account and make sure it uses the same email as you use on this site so it can pull your picture across
I dont have the source, swing, mcr, or out tab under my sounds, like in the tutorial. Why am I missing things from my screen? Also all my patterns are in the A1, A2, etc form, instead of the 1,2,3, etc formation like in the tutorial. Grrr. Please help.
OK. So how do I get the 1.6 beta version?
You need to open service center and download the latest version. We are on 1.7 now
Im using my saved email and password and it wont let me log in.
You gotta use whatever I.go you used to register maschine
I reset it. Im good now.
Good news fam
Hey! Can I apply swing to patterns recorded in my DAW? I like the swing feature but I want it in Logic! Whats my options? Thank u!
if your sequences are in logic you would use the swing in logic , or you could record patterns into maschine and export/drag the midi out. But if you’re doing your recording in logic it’s probably easier to just use logics swing functions
I think I will just export midi then cause the swing options in Maschine is better in my opinion..thank u!
cool man, have fun!
Hey Joe – nice tute.
Did you ever do the sequel to this tutorial? I’d really like to know some more about what EXACTLY the ‘Cycle’ value and ‘Invert’ is actually doing to the pattern.
At the moment I just mess with it til it feels ‘right’ (as you should!) – but it would still be nice to know the logic behind it.
Thanks once again!
I haven’t done another yet, inverted pushes it early instead of late. Cycle is basically the measure it uses to swing.
Hi Saint Jo The tutorials are VERY helpful. Thank you for all the hard work you put into the site. I understood everything in the video and have no problem applying swing for my group or individual sound in software mode or with the controller. But, when i’m working from the controller, my right screen doesn’t show the “src, grv, mcr, out” tabs like the software. Is it supposed to? I’m using version 1.7.2. When I’m in group, I see the list of groups with the one I’m using highlighted. When i’m in sound, it shows a list of sounds… Read more »
Sounds like you’re in the browser, press the browse button to get out of that and get back to the main screen
Hi Saint Jo!
I´m new member and new to this mashine, but I´m using mashine mikro, and I´m wondering if I´m limited to do all the features that you can do in your tutorials or if I can come around it with other options? But anyway I´m trying to follow all your steps in your tutorials and what I can not manage to do I just do it in the program, but my question is only if I´m limited?, or if I have the same possibilities?
Welcome to the site bro! You have most of the same possibilities the only limitations are the hands on controls, so there will be some things you can’t do from the controller due to lack of controls. But if you see something you have a question about just let me know, we have some Mikro specific videos and always make more if needed.
I find theres normally a way to find the Mikro equivilant with a few shift button presses.
Master Group Sound is
f1 f2 f3 on the controller.
Then you just use the jog arrows next to the NAV button to select source and then turn the controller knob to select Groove. then the right nav button to bring up the amount. (Although it only does it in multiples of 5)
The software is much quicker, but you deffo can find all the functionality in the Mikro controller it just takes a bit more digging into then the full controller.
Yeah most of the major things you can still do, as of right now stuff like autowrite isn’t possible, but it’s coming in an update 🙂
As for the menus of the Mikro, I think they laid everything out well in regards to that single screen, navigation isn’t bad at all.
Hello Saintjoe 🙂 This is my first comment here, I just bought a Maschine and I really enjoy watching your tutorials on the right screen while I’m discovering by myself on the left screen haha. Anyway I have a question for you : On the Maschine Mk2 there is a “swing” button that you can set thanks to the big main knob, what does it serves to ? is it an equivalent of the swing in the groove section ? It seems to be… I thought it was the only way to apply grooves in step mode, to a particular… Read more »
Glad you like the content, welcome!
That is actually the master swing by default, however if you hit the swing button and hold a group button, turning the knob will adjust group swing, if holding a pad, it will adjust the sound swing amount 🙂
Thank you for your answer 🙂 So you can stack 2 different swing (I just tested and it seemed to be that) one that you can visualize in the software in the groove section, and one mysterious you activate with the swing button on the hardware, right? 😀
It’s actually 3 levels of swing, the master swing shows at the top by the transport area, then each group and sound has it’s own “groove” area that has a swing knob 🙂
Ho ok ok ok, you’re totally right 😀
I’ts like a shortcut. And also something to adjust midi events start position. Cool!
Is it possible to set a different swing for each pattern of a group or sound ?
I wish we could have different swing amounts per pattern but since they put it at the “group” or “sound” level it will carry over into all patterns in the group unfortunately. Hopefully they change that in the future.
Yeah, thank you a lot for your answer 🙂
Hi saintjoe! I’m trying to find out a way to make patterns in which some have swing on the hi hats and some don’t (on the same hi hats – only different sections of the song). Let’s say i wanna start with 4×4 hi hats on the verse – but want to apply swing to the hi hats on the chorus. I haven’t found out a way to do that. When i apply swing to a specific sound – all the other patterns of that kit will have the same amount of swing on the hi hats. Also, trying to… Read more »
You can record automation of the swing in the patterns you want swing to be on. Make sure you duplicate the pattern so you have more than one pattern to use and add the automation to the second one.
juss curious.. are you guys still updating on this site? and do guys have tutorials on the updated software? maybe some tips….
Yes we update the site regularly, are you on the email newsletter to receive updates? Also all the newest tutorials show up on the front page. We have over 100 videos on maschine 2 and have been covering it since the first day it was released.
