Many folks ask me how to adjust the input level when sampling.
This is a normal part of sampling, adjusting the input level directly on the sampler.
Well, the default sample mode in Maschine doesn’t have an input level knob or fader, only a threshold level!
In this video I show how to use the input module as your sampling input in order to get better control over your sampling levels without having to use normalize.

Nice.
Another great tip from the the beast known as Saint Joe.
imma use this one alot.
word fellas, it’s simple but many miss this feature when sampling in Maschine
I’m Waiting on the video on how to build a car using maschine.
ahahahahaha lol That was funny . Good job, peace!
lol no doubt!
LMFAOOOOO @VIVDRUSH
Yeah, I see what you saying SJ. Coming from the MPC2000xl that red input knob was right in your face….so it’s good to know Maschine has that feature as well. I never took time to explore that. ! Magnificent!
Yeah fam, sometimes you just need to adjust that input quickly, this gives you more control.
nice!!! Thanks Joe… kinda sucks that NI hasn’t made this any easier. BTW How long did it take you to figure that out?? I would have never gotten that.
not long lol, but I agree it would be better to have it in the regular sample menu, but it’s just one extra step I guess.
hopefully in the future they will add a gain knob in the sampler area.
this is one of them videos that reminds me how bright SJ is. props.
Ha, thanks bruh
yeah, its kind of amazing
cool, glad to help!
I know that sound engine anywhere. That’s the that classic Emu Proteus 2000 bubby lol.
ahaaaaaaaaaaaa lol
Good informative vid.
Unbelievable that a sampler of this type doesnt include an input gain control. Someone at NI needs to experience some slappage.
Yeah, not sure why they put it in the input module? maybe they see that as the general input? I think it should be in the regular sample screen right next to the threshold
At least we have it in the Maschine! Not a big deal how you get to it.
word fam, just a different outlook on things
I definitely feel though!
That was a cool vid! It’s never ending here with the knowledge man!!!
word fam, glad to help!
Very good info. Thanks for the tip fam!
no doubt fam!
An anotha one! This is definitely something I will use. Im sure NI will figure a easier more str8 forward approach to this procedure. Thanks SJ
No doubt fam! Glad you like it.
Hey SJ do you think you could do a tut on sampling youtube using Soundflower with maschine?? I was able to set it up but Im hearing a phasing in the wav after I sample. I dont know if its soundflowerbed or the fact that I cant find soundflower 2ch in the audio midi setting of Maschine. Im sure its user error on my part.
Producer Stylzkeyz
Im not on a mac fam, can’t use soundflower 😉
Tasty knowledge SJ. I needed to find a way to control my external samplers levels into machine. Thanks for pointing that out man.
word bro! this is one I get asked a bit
Hey SJ, does this work when sampling from your computer via youtube or media player?
Yes, anything you are running through the input can be adjusted this way.
Ok. And I have been just taking my headphone output and plugging it into channel 1&2 via stereo splitter and using the headphone volume knob on my mixer to get the levels up.
word, that works too lol, whatever works bro, no rules!
thanks SJ for the vid but that’s pretty complex for me. i think i’ll stick to adjusting the input from my turntable. (*shrugz!) maybe i’ll come back @ it & try it again.
yeah, this is only for those that don’t have a turntable or other device where they can control the input amount. Also good for sampling virtual sources.
My interface has input level adjusting so I’m good over here, but we’ve had folks that can’t adjust their turntable (no mixer, just straight line input) or maybe trying to sample from a cd player, etc, where they couldn’t adjust the input.
thats a great tip the level is always too loud on my chops , thats crazy they didn’t make this features simple , i wish they could improve this in the next update just adjust the volume of each group with a simple knob would be great to mix our tracks . but at least we can do that with this input technique.
This is just for when sampling, if you want to adjust the level of your group just hold the level button and turn the volume knob, same for single sounds/pads 🙂
thanks for your input 🙂 i didn’t know about this it was my main problem recently just to mix each group bertween them and more for the sample wich was too loud so impossible to hear the keys or synth over it . glad to get ur help as always.
Good news man!!
Nice tip Saintjoe, really helps was looking for something like that
Word man, glad to help!!
Hey guys, Just got a mixer (8 channel – Peavey PV 8) but can’t get any sounds from my iPad or phone to come through at all when plugged into my laptop? Really new to this and think I have everything set up ok but something is not working. Effectively I want to sample from my iPad or phone using either iTunes music or Spotify. I have watched the tutorials on using an external mixer but am now lost as to how to get things hooked up, the only issue I may have is with the cable from my phone/iPad… Read more »
How is your mixer hooked up to your laptop. Do you have the right input chosen inside of Maschine. Do you have both channels turned up on the mixer that you have your ipad plugged into?
Hi saintjoe, My mixer is a USB connection one so it just hooks up via a USB port. I think it then shows up in the audio settings of the laptop as a USB device that can be chosen for recording options? I am not even sure i am using the lead correctly. I have them plugged into channel 1 on the mixer but not too sure which one the black and red bits should go into as there is no indication as to which is mono only? Really confusing as there are 3 connectors for each channel (mic, line… Read more »
OK, you need to plug one into channel one LINE and one into channel 2 LINE, you can’t plug into the insert, that is for your fx send/return
Each channel has to go to it’s own channel on the mixer, so channel 1 will be the red and channel 2 will be the black, or the other way around. It doesn’t matter, you just need to make sure you split them up 🙂
Ok. That makes sense when it comes to the level indicators on the mixer. will try again. Sorry for the hassle man 🙂 Also, on another note I have a problem with audio when Maschine is plugged in. I can either get Maschine to work (using an ASIO4ALL v2 sound driver) OR the system sounds, IE, iTunes, YouTube etc BUT not both at once? For example Maschine is plugged in now and I can press pads and play project files fine but I cannot play say a video from MaschineTurtorials and get sound? Is this normal (I am guessing it… Read more »
That is a limitation of asio4all and/or your mixer interface. You could try using the asio multiclient server, do a google search, it’s on the steinberg forums. As for sampling from spotify or anything else internally, this has more to do with your audio interface options, not all interfaces allow you to do this so it would be down to what you can and can’t do with your mixer. Maschine only picks up whatever your audio interface can feed it.
Ok. Thanks, I am sure there is a solution to my issues (just need to dig a little further).
I think it could be to do with ASIO4ALL as I had the sounds issue before I got the mixer.
Is there a reason why Maschine will not work with the normal sound drivers in my laptop (that is the only reason I downloaded the ASIO4ALL drivers in the first place :))
Yes, the issue is asio4all, it’s a single client device, you need a multi client driver to be able to hear multiple programs at once. Asio is a better driver for PC audio, gives you lower latency and better performance than the build in drivers on any laptop/pc. I mentioned your interface because most interfaces come with their own drivers so that you don’t have to use asio4all, but if it isn’t multiclient then you would still have the same issue. Downloading the asio multiclient driver will get you around the issue you are having with having maschine and other… Read more »
Yeh man. I think that now that I have the mixer and cables hooked up right the level lights are behaving as expected. The input level in Maschine is still very low though but as I can’t here any music coming through the mixer (due to me not being able to here speaker sounds and Maschine at the same time – the problem we mentioned!) I can’t sample anything? If I can just get system sounds and Maschine sounds working together I am sure it will all work as expected. I have tried downloading the multiclient but it didn’t seem… Read more »
argggggh. still doesn’t work. only getting either Maschine or system sounds!!!!!
Oh well, I guess the wonderful world of sampling is not gonna be available for me 🙂
Will have to stick to creating with what I have available within Maschine.
If you want to monitor what you’re sampling in maschine, in the sampling menu, click the little speaker icon to hear what’s coming in.
Think i tried that but it didn’t make any difference man 🙁
Gonna get audacity and try to sample a few MP3’s first to get going. Just wanted the whole world of Spotify to choose from 🙂
Thanks again.
Hey, I’m having trouble with Maschine not recognizing my audio interface. I’m getting a signal through my system preferences audio input, but not in Maschine. The audio interface is very basic, just a 1 in 1 out ‘iconnex ikey-audio’ I thought as long as I had a line signal coming in to my macbook, maschine would detect it no? Thanks.
You have to go into maschine’s audio/midi settings and tell it to use your audio interface, also on the routing tab tell it which inputs to use
Got it all sorted after some fiddling around thanks. Turns out it sees my audio interface ins & outs as two different devices so I have to keep switching back and forth to playback and record. Thanks for your help 🙂
Man that’s the second time I heard of someone having that issue, not sure why it’s doing that. Will report it.
Can’t be dealing with this in the long term, can you recommend an audio interface for around the $100 US mark? Thanks man 😉
Hmmm, maybe something like the alesis io2 express, yamaha audiogram, or steinberg cI1 or cI2
What is the best way to increase the level when sampling an internal sound?
(when your source sound is already on max volume on its pad – but the resulting sampled waveform isn’t big enough)
same way here, you can use an input module and set it to internal, solo the sound you want to resample, and increase it that way
No, its not working for me. I must be doing something wrong.
I’ve got a group A playing drums, on Group B Pad 1 has the Input module, set to Source: Internal. Adjusting the Level has no effect.
On Group B, Pad 2, I’m in Sampling mode – Source ‘Internal’, Input ‘Input’ – but nothing is coming through to this pad to sample.
When i switch the Input on this Pad from ‘Input’ back to ‘Master’, I get a signal and it works – but of course, I want to be able to change the Input level and can’t.
I’ll check it out, in theory it should work but I will see what’s up
what’s your external 2 hooked up to? like an external sound card or something? thanks!
Yeah, one of the inputs on my soundcard
