Hey what’s good MT Fam!
Had a question from one of our Ableton users on how to properly dump and route everything after you’ve completed your track in Maschine.
So this is for those that don’t want to record anything into Ableton or sequence the track in Ableton, but if you’ve already made your track in Maschine and you want to get that MIDI data into Ableton as well as route the audio into Ableton tracks, this tutorial shows you how.

man that’s so cool!
Very flexible man. Get the idea down in Maschine, and flesh it out in Ableton!
That is cool,so many ways to get er done son!
Definitely lots of ways to work!
Cool tips SJ – so many different ways to work with Maschine and Ableton.
I know you were probably just using a simple example for the point of explaining the concept, but in a situation like that – wouldn’t it be simpler to just drag and drop all of your (non-drums) sounds as audio?
Seeing as they are simply triggering long phrase audio samples, you are probably not going to do any further editing to those midi patterns within Ableton, so why keep the midi data when dragging them in?
Yep, just wanted to show the concept, in my situation, I’d just drag the samples in personally, but the concept is the same either way, and that was the most recent project I had finished so it was first in my “recent project” list 🙂
Also, I don’t ‘dump’ my MIDI and audio in Ableton…
… I tenderly place it there.
🙂
Yes….as you can see…I’m very tender with it as well! 🙂
SJ I love the site learning way more more than I expected. Respect to SJ and Knock for the much needed help.
Good news fam, glad to help, let us know if there’s anything you need!
if u add effects in maschine…. then once you bring things into ableton. u lose the effects right…..
Not if you’re exporting audio, it will be in the audio file
Good video!
When you alter the midi pattern in Ableton, does it change the midi data of the patterns in Maschine? Or is Ableton just sending the MIDI data to the Maschine plug-in to trigger the sound?
If you can play around with it in Ableton, then this is a great way to add final tweaks and subtle drum changes in your track without having to create a bunch of new patterns in Maschine!
Nope, it will stay the same in Maschine as long as you don’t change it there, if you change it in ableton and don’t erase what you have in Maschine and just let ableton trigger Maschine you can tweak as much as you want while keeping the originals 🙂
Perfect!! I think i’ve found my workflow. Thanks SJ
no problem, glad to help!
Hey joe for some reason I’m only able to hear channels 1-4 when I do it this method. When I click and drag the other midi clips I can see the midi notes they just don’t trigger sounds like in the other channels..I’ve double check all my routing and it all looks good..any thoughts?
Make sure you setup the audio routing in maschine for the other channels
I have..like when I’m on the scene in the maschine the audio is routed but when I go to the empty scene to make sure the midi is routed properly I only get channels 1-4.. I’ve tried from starting fresh and run into the same problem…
How many groups are you using and how do you have the audio routed, also how is it routed in ableton? Do you have an audio track in ableton to receive the audio from all of your groups or outputs in maschine? If 1-4 work they others should work so it has to be an issue with the routing somewhere. You can email me the project if you want and I’ll take a look at it help@MaschineTutorials.com
I think you’re joe, cuz i started a new ableton project and did the same steps but with a different maschine project and it worked fine, but then i reopened this one project and I’m still having the same issue with only getting the first 4 channels…after looking at the routing again I don’t see where I went wrong…there was one point when i was trying to route things to an fx group, but i reset that group to see if that would help the issue but it didn’t. Do i need to send the samples along with the project… Read more »
Just the project will be fine I can at least check the routing. Just send the ableton project.
Any chance you have done a video like this one but for properly routing Machine into Cubase? That would be awesome. I have Ableton but have a soft spot for Cubase. Let me know. Thanks!
check these out https://maschinetutorials.com/?s=cubase&submit.x=0&submit.y=0
Hi SaintJoe, this is a great tutorial ,
i´ve tried to implement this with a project that have some keaboards from kontakt, but it doesnt work, i can see the midi notes in ableton , but without hear them.
I also added an audio track and dragged the audio data from maschine but the track is empty
it should work with kontakt keyboards ?
regards
Yeah it still works just make sure you enable midi in maschine on the actual pads you have kontakt on
SaintJoe,
i have enabled the midi for the individial sounds in “Sound Midi Settings” and dragged the group to ableton, it shows the notes in it but not sound yet
if you just drag the midi, you have to point it back to the maschine in order for it to make any sound
Hi SaintJoe , i feel really dumb with this 😛 i think the midi is pointed back from ableton because when i play a scene in maschine it sounds in ableton (the kit and the keyboards (ch 3, 4)), but when i move to an empty scene (as you do in tutorial) the only sound is from the kit (2) , but the kontakt keyboards dont. i´ve checked the outputs (midi & audio) and all seems to be fine. the only difference i´ve noted with your procedure was in ableton , the audio input channels from maschine are 3/4 for… Read more »
Yes they will play from within maschine, but you have to actually have your midi track in ableton pointed back to the maschine channel, that way when you put it on an empty scene, the sounds will still play.
Hey SaintJoe ,
i make it work with another project, i guess the other one is fucked up for some reason.
thanks for your time!
Sometimes that can happen for sure! Weird things, glad you got it working!
ok im late but this is nice! def changed the game for my workflow. not sure if it was already asked, but my question is if i already have a finished composition in maschine i need to know the bpm before i open maschine and the project into abelton, correct?
Glad you dig it, sometimes you can name the project with your bpm in standalone so when you open it you remember which bpm to put it.
Ok. Call this dumb question but I guess I’m here to learn this stuff of which I don’t know. I followed this video but was instantly stumped by having no ‘1-Maschine’ listed in external instrument in ableton on my MIDI To output?
I’m gonna say you’re on a mac right? If so, make sure you’ve enabled Ableton to use vsts in it’s preferences, then you have to load the Maschine VST as AU plugins can’t send MIDI out.
Ok that has helped allot. I open Maschine as a VST plugin from Ableton. Now I’ve said it it sounds supper obvious. I just had both programmes open assuming weirdly they would connect. Ha! I will see how I get on with it now. Oh, I am too on Mac! Thanks!
Cool man, let me know how it goes!
Is there any reason why when I drag a group across it would not place them in key sequence? The group is only a sample sound keyed in Maschine. It just lays it out in the same key in Ableton?
Yes, when you do it like that, if it’s just one sound you’re dragging, don’t use “sound midi batch settings” because when setting “sounds to midi notes” it will just be a single note.
Instead, just right click on that single pad, use “sound midi settings” and give it a midi channel the same as if you were using a synth or other instrument.
Yo fellas, I’m following this video to the step where you are dragging your midi, with the drag set to midi. I’ve set up the midi batch set up to spec, and have channels correct. But when I try to drag, it gives me a big ole “can’t do it”. You know, the O with the / in the middle. I can drag audio, but that’s it. Any suggestions?? Thank you in advance. Adogg
make sure you’re not dragging it to an audio track
well, looking at the video, He has maschine as a vst, then he adds an external instrument. then, he drags his midi to that external Instrument. I’ve tried the same, but with no results.
It should be working if you’re doing that, only thing I can think of is maybe you have some permissions issues on your ableton or maschine folders, are you running Ableton as an admin?
yeah ,bought and paid for on both of them. So, I was able to drag over the drums to the external instrument even with the “cant do it sign”. But now no sound when playing. I don’t get it.
I’m not speaking about buying it, I’m talking about folder permissions, that’s the only way I can see it not letting you drag it over. Is the midi routed back to the Maschine track? Is the audio routed properly so you can hear it? If you want to send me your project file I can take a look at it.

Very cool, I’m always trying to find better ways to integrate maschine into ableton. What I do now, is bounce all of my midi clips to audio. This way is a few more steps than what I’m used to, but I think this way might be a little more flexible so I’m going to try it out.
Cool man, hope it works out for ya
Hi guys. I have a problem with the midi clock in Machine. I am running maschine as a plugin in Ableton Live 8 Suite. When I open a new project in Ableton and load Maschine as a vst plugin the midi clock sync’s perfectly to live. (It is also fine as a standalone). But when I get to about 14 to 15 tracks and/or start warping audio in Ableton the sync goes out of time. Starting on the upbeat after the one. So like an offbeat. Also I have trouble with latency on the pads sometimes. Could this be my… Read more »
Also I forgot to mention I am using a Motu ultralite mk3 which is the midi clock master
I have noticed that this happens when I have record enabled on the maschine track. Maybe a feedback loop?
Could be something funky like a bug or a configuration. I would test it to see if you disable rec if it still happens. Your computer seems more than capable to handle what you’re trying to do. You have Live set to use all cores and everything right? Are you on Mac or PC?
I am on a Mac. (imac i7 3.4GHz quadcore 16gig ram). I have figured out that maschine is out of time when record is enabled on the maschine track in ableton. When you disable it the maschine goes back in time with ableton. Took me ages to figure this out as when you load maschine into your project record enable is on automatically and maschine is out of time. If I disable record it goes back in time. Was doing my head in because I am using midi with external instrument and routing midi so I wasnt recording much using… Read more »
Nice find man, that’s good to know! Thanks for reporting back!
I have done this set up and everything is routed fine but I am still getting latency on the pads on Maschine. Any ways to correct this?
Are you in midi mode or maschine mode? You shouldn’t get any latency in maschine mode, the pads are a little less sensitive in midi mode though. You may need to adjust your audio buffer settings.
How do you know if you are in midi mode or machine mode? And where do I adjust the audio buffer settings. In the preferences? Or below the master volume?
if you pressed shift+control it’s in midi mode, if not, it’s in maschine mode
buffer settings should be in your ableton preferences menu
Oh ok so this setup is for using in midi mode for live performance with maschine as your midi controller
No it’s not specifically for that, it’s just for getting your midi data into Live after you’ve already made it in Maschine. I was just asking about MIDI mode because of your latency issue, since I know the pad response is a little different when using it as a midi controller vs using it in regular maschine mode.
ok. I am still getting latency on the pads but maschne in time when running a pattern. How should my midi/snyc preferences be looking in ableton with maschine running as a pluguin?
Those preferences don’t really matter for the vst. When it comes to latency I would check performance settings in ableton mainly. Multi core, audio buffers, etc. If you want to snail me the project I can test it on my end.

this is the way to setup a workflow, now to make a template!
glad to help fam!
