Hey what’s good fam
A lot of times we get questions on general production tips or basic beatmaking information.
Today I wanted to share a quick tip that isn’t Maschine specific, but can be used in Maschine and anything else.
I wanted to create a basic tutorial showing how velocity can have a great impact on the groove of your drum tracks.

this one is great – i already knew how to do this technically…
but it’s the artistic-ness that helps me – – great tips….
would love to see more like this one….
cool man, we get quite a few questions on stuff like this, figured just start doing these types of things too
thanks !
no problem man, always trying to help wherever we can 🙂
this a great no doubt i love to use this on the hi hats
For sure man, thanks for the comment as usual
Good vid SJ. I usually play stuff manually by default. So my patterns end up all over the place a lot of times. LOL But to be honest, this is a good reminder for folks like myself. I’m all for increasing the groove. Peace.
I play manually too, this was more to show how playing with varied velocity can help. What I showed in this video, I usually just do manually by how I play the pads, but I wanted to show how it changes the feel of the groove. I know some like to put their pads on full velocity to get them to “bang” but if you do that it’s always a good idea to go back and mess with the velocity still. Of course there are no rules, just trying to share some ideas to help people get the sound and… Read more »
This kinda stuff is priceless!!! Tips like this makes good beat makers into great producers!!! I love beat makerz though lol!!!
Excellent 🙂
Hahahaha, indeed fam, indeed, thanks for checking it
Very helpful tutorial saintjoe, thanks man!
no doubt fam, glad to help for sure
Yo Joe,
It sais the link has been removed. Whats is up?
B
What link? For the video? I’m watching it right now fam lol.
yo @saintjoe thx so much for this vid really going to help my drum grooves.
Good stuff fam, glad to help!
Great vid Joe! Would you do more beat basic vids like this? That would be awesome, and by Maschine being both a drum machine and software based it really lends itself well to the explanations.
glad to help, just let me know what types of other stuff you’d want to see
Hey SJ loving the site man, really great.
I make deep house, indie disco and electro music and im wondering what would be the best way to integrate custom grooves that have been lifted from other tracks in logic pro? its something thats interrupting my flow whilst using maschine and id love to get it sorted.
Thanks again man
Do you use maschine as a plugin or standalone? What you could do if using Maschine as a plugin is drag the midi into Logic, point it back to the maschine plugin, and apply your groves to the data in Logic. As maschine doesn’t import midi or groove information yet, you’ll have to do it outside of Maschine.
Hi SJ new problem for ya man (can t have you getting bored now can we lol)
i have recorded some synth lines using an oddity plug, some of the initial key hits have produced a pop or click if i reduce the note velocity this does fade but i lose the intensity of the sound is there anyway to eliminate this without losing the intensity – i have tried light key presses which helped a bit but did not totally solve the problem?
cheers G
try turning down the volume in the oddity plug itself yet keep the velocity high for the intensity of the sound
you mean on the plus in itself rather than the sound slot its on right ? i can t find an overall volume control for this plug in ?
yeah on the plugin, try adjusting the vca gain
Thanks for the vid, i just wish in the 1.8 update that we could get a number system so like when you are doing this you can see what the velocity is number wise. so if i turn down my hats i could set them to go like 100, 65, 75, 45 etc…)
They announced finer select/note control from the hardware for 1.8, but I don’t think anything within the GUI.
Very cool. Amazing how a subtle tweak makes such a difference
yeah, I’ve been using velocity this way for a while, figured it’s a great thing to share 🙂
Hi Saintjoe
Great video,using velocity does add realism,and dynamics,I’m a new proud ower of a Mk2 Maschine,he,he
quick question for you
I know about adusting the pad velocities, and noticed in the software preferences, the velocity scaling.
how do I use this,?
I have the pad sensitivity to max,and would like to have the lightest of touches.Current the scaling is at linear.
thanks saintjoe.
I usually put mine on soft 3 to get a lighter more dynamic feel. Best to try them out and see which you prefer.
thanks saintjoe for the quick reply
I will have a play,part of my exploring of my MK2 ,he,he
No problem!
