So as I have been talking about in the forums, I had been planning to start doing what I call “20 minute workouts”
It’s a spin off of what Knock does with his 7 minute sample challenges, however instead of samples, I have 20 minutes to come up with an original track.
Sometimes it will work, sometimes it will be wack, but the point is to show the workflow, and how sometimes you just have to go with it and not over think things.
This is the first one, I used ableton live as a plugin so I could use some ableton only instruments.
feedback please!!

Fam…That was dope! You already know Im loving the epic film sound….Acoustix is tight, too bad I don’t have Live 8…future purchase? hmmmmmm……..HAHAHAHA. I like the video, looking Foward to more of em in the future and thanks for taking the time to make it. Im feeling the sound of the track. Peace!!!!
thanks bro, this is actually the style of music I prefer, epic, electronic, ambient. I find it more fun, but I’ll do some nice hip hop/soul too, I just love all types of music.
wow … I wonder if using ableton as a plugin works on Mac
honestly I really didn’t have to use the rewire at all, I could have just used virtual midi like I was and tracked the instruments to audio in ableton when I’m done, which I’ll probably do anyway, rewire works if you have a sound card that cant run to apps at once. So for me, the rewire was really pointless lol. Don’t ask why I did it either hahaha.
Good video. I wonder why the tempos didn’t match up?
didn’t need the tempos to be matched up for any reason, all sequencing was done in Maschine, Ableton was just a rack. I really didn’t even need the rewire vst at all, I didn’t use it really. I just used virtual midi.
So their wasn’t a midi out sync clock or signal?
nah, no need for it as everything is running in Maschine.
Nice! Like your choice of sounds on that one.
thanks fam
Thats a relaxing track man. Like listening to the Art of Noise.
Ableton sounds nice, too bad I gave up on that app in its infancy (circa 2001). May have 2 do a double take.
thanks bro! I didn’t use ableton for a while, they had a sale on the update, I bought it for 39 bucks lol, messed with some of the sounds in it and ended up buying some libraries. Most of the sounds I used were factory or from the free partner collection, I didn’t use the actual libraries I bought.
OH MAN !!! I love this man. Them drums sound like they recorded when King Kong cane out the woods !! BOOM !!! lol Epic. Madbull hit it on the nose…. definitely an art of noise type feel to it…and I LOOOOVVVEEE Art of noise. !! Great Job Bro !
Thanks fam…this is really my element, I don’t share it much lol, but this is the stuff I really dig doing yo! Thanks for watching brother!
man that’s some old mellow throw some huff up in the air and lay-back joint! hot!
ahahaha, thanks for checkin it fam!
Yo fam that is my kind of production. EEPPIICC!! Madbull hit it on the head ART OF Noise. We are showing our age. Great track Joe. I have Ableton also but only use it for post production. You have enlightened me. THANKX
thanks for checking fam, and yes, I know Art of Noise lol ahahaha, love it!!
Awesome!!
Really good mate. Plus it was cool seeing how you constructed it and then set it all out.
Looking forward to seeing more!
Thank you sir, glad you found it useful.
this is really dope man, the vibe is unique
thanks for checking it
Yo JOE, really dope. Finally a brother not scared to show something different, I prefer more atmospheric music my self. It’s like an escape from the world of the sunken hiphop today. Good job homie!
No doubt fam, yeah man, I love this type of stuff, I’m really into experimental music/soundscapes. Thanks for the reply fam!
Whats up saitjoe, I am new to your website, and I am really curious about what you think about Studio One Pro. It looks really good and strong, what is your take on it, and how do you work with it
I own it and love it, if I want to use a DAW for mixing/recording vocals etc, it would most likely be S1, great app, easy to work with and has a great sound.
how did you rewire ableton to maschine? where could i find that plug-in
for rewire I used the rewire vst from energy xt, but honestly I didn’t need it, I was using virtual midi from a program called copperlan, that’s all I really needed, but the rewire vst would allow me to sample the sounds directly into maschine if I wanted to. However my soundcard does this too so honestly, I didn’t really need to have the rewire in there at all, but did it because some many need to use it that way.
*Thumbs Up*
thank you sir
Tight Work St. Joe!! Loved it! Keep it UP!!
thanks fam, just trying to show the process a lil more!
Nice sounds like a movie.
thanks for watching fam, def the feel I was going for.
Nice!
Definitely cinematic.
Thanks for checking fam!
Nice work Joe! I’m loving your workflow tutorials. Good stuff.
dope fam, that’s whasup!
Nice sj really enjoyed that bro tip top! I kinda remember a post a while back saying u never put any of ur stuff out there! And said sj music producer? Or just a dope reviewer! U just put that one to bed son! Bang on!
Thanks fam! Yeah I don’t usually put stuff out, but I will share with the MT fam 🙂 Glad you dig it man.
nice one 🙂
Thanks for the comment
This is very cool…!! I have not used Ableton in many many years but need to brush up. Cause I know it’s hot. I got a free LITE copy when I purchased my TC Electronics Imapact Twin. I was hoping that you or Knock could do a tutorial showing Rewire with Logic and Maschine. Using it the same way you just did with Abelton. I have created Environments in Logic to work with Maschine and done other ways of using the two but I think using Rewire might be the best for me.
Thanks,
ChillWill
logic doesn’t support being a rewire slave that I know of so it will not work this way. Maschine isn’t a rewire slave either.
So in your tutorial, what was the Master and what was the slave? I understand that you had Rewire Vst as a plugin which then allowed you to launch Abelton in essence using it as the plugin. And you were just routing midi correct? This is basically what I am wanting to do with Logic. The other ways of using Mashine and Logic with the enviornments that I created though it does work; it just slows my creative flow down. I want to find some way to use Logic as a VST..
Thanks man for the info..
Maschine was the master, ableton was running via rewire as a slave. If you just want to trigger logic you can use midi via maschine’s virtual output to logics midi inputs, but you will have no way to get the audio into Maschine unless your interface supports recording streaming audio. Also it will not be locked to tempo like rewire. Basically you can use maschine as a sequencer via midi to trigger sounds in logic but it’s not the same as synching via rewire. There’s a few more steps to get everything working, I would imagine the environment will be… Read more »
Yea man.. That is exactly the Enviornment that I created about 2 months ago and it just is not as smooth as a rewired setup. The good thing is that it does work.
Cool man this is some great insight. I guess I will be opening up my Ableton software.. LOL
Thanks again!! You guys are doing an awsome job and thanks for the quick response..
No doubt bro, glad to help!!
nice,20 munite take, smooth work flow, smooth music output. I like that groove. Hey, right on bro, that was great music creation! this is skodyody, a new kid on the block, just checking you out.
Thanks bro, glad you liked it and welcome to the community!! Make yourself at home 😉
maaad props for this one SJ… fiiiire!!
Thanks fam!
Saintjoe,
First, let me say, that track is hittin on all 12 cylinders with a nitro boost!
I heard ‘Im Ready’ and ‘Cosmic Voyager’ by the group Kano waaaaaaaayyyy back in the day when I was between 8 and 10. Electronic music was my first musical love. Thanks for sharing with us and bringing it to the forefront in a time where hip hop and all its diluted spinoffs are dominating the airwaves and minds of the masses. Nothing like music that speaks without saying a word…
Bro thanks for the feedback fam, truly appreciate it. I’m hoping folks can gleen some workflow tips and tricks from these types of videos. Sometimes, just seeing how others work helps spark an idea in your own workflow.
EPIC watching that flow be built from scratch with such ease! inspirational to say the least!… learned a few things watching it aswel about linking up ableton… can’t get the beat out of my head either! cant wait for the next one fam..
Cool man, yeah I always hope folks learn something about the workflow in the process with this videos, sometimes it just helps to see that workflow. There will be more for sure, just mixing it up with all the other requests 🙂
Man, SJ….you need to do another one of these. This is by far my fav song on here.
It’s play the vid and close your eyes and get lost in your thoughts for 20 mins stuff….so good!!
You really need to let us hear more of your talent bro, I’d totally buy a CD with music like this.
Epic stuff and so engulfing!
More please sir…. 🙂
Out of all the styles of music I do, this is the stuff I love the most. And about a CD…..more info on that soon 😉
Yeah, I do need to do another one, I can’t promise it will be this style of music though, usually just whatever comes out lol.
Interesting about the CD, you have me intrigued!!
I’m not exactly one for sticking to any particular sound myself, what comes out is best bro cos then it has soul….
Looking forward to it 😀
Indeed man 🙂 I love it all…but I do have my favorites, and I really enjoy exploring stuff that tells a story more-so than just a “good beat”
And what comes out can be random at times, haha!
Just look at the tracks I’ve made so far!!
Lol 😀
Yes indeed, that’s the fun part!
that’s is truly sweet bro. thanks for the inspiration.
Siiiiiiiiiiiccccckkkkkkk!!!!!!! Man you did yo thing on this! This is the kind of music I make. This is one of those tracks I wish I made! Haha man I wish I could flow on this track..
Thanks fam, glad you dig it!
